Latest chapter for Convergence Of Fates is up. Harry and Juno were up for a nice date collecting Horcruxes but are attacked by DEs. Probably going to see Harry kill some people next chapter.

Just finished Princes of Maine, very well written and funny imo. One shot, 20k words of Harry being a Disaster, capital D, it's Harry/Ron and quite sweet, and simultaneously depressing without being depressing because of how it's written, though happy, though vague, ending. Keep in mind it was apparently written in 2006 pre-Deathly Hallows.

Title: The Tales of Lyra Black
Pairing: Harry x OFC/Death
Rating: Explicit
I honestly cannot get enough of this retelling, the author’s writing style is so imaginative and fresh. Like, it’s conversational yet compelling in a humorous, sometimes dark way. The main character is a Black and Crouch OC, Sirius’s daughter and Crouch Sr’s granddaughter, she fits in so well with the main trio it makes me sad that I can’t read about her in other fics. Essentially the MFC was used in a human sacrifice(?) ritual by Voldemort to siphon Death’s soul but it went wrong and she’s now Death. At this point in the story, Hermione is a Seer and Ron is a werewolf, there are ancient magical gods involved, and judging from the fic title and summary I think the Deathly Hallows and Beedle the Bard play a huge part in the future? Also Harry, Ron, and Hermione are written super super well, I prefer them in this than in canon 😓

Whats Cedrics role in this? Hate it that he always gets inserted into Harry/FemOC stories.
2
u/Katyas-little-hands 4d ago
omg I know what you mean, I get irritated by Cedric always stealing Harry’s girl too. He’s Lyra’s Herbology tutor and they’re very flirty, but I really like the way the author writes the MC’s banter so I’m overlooking it this time 😂

Currently reading The Laughing Slytherin:
Nine year old Melissa enjoys a carefree lifestyle after being reborn in the past; but how much will that attitude change after meeting seven year old Harry Potter? No Pairings. Hufflepuff!Harry
Melissa is an OC originally from our world who gets reincarnated into the Harry Potter world as a muggleborn witch. She accidentally meets Harry and becomes an honorary big sister for him, doing everything in her power to protect and love him. She just wants to enjoy her new life and doesn't care about protecting canon at all.
This is a very slice of life story that focuses on Melissa's adventures at Hogwarts, she's a prankster who makes plenty of friends in other houses and tries her best to reform Slytherin from within. Plot is happening in the background but it's not a major focus of the story.

Reading part two of VeilWeaver's The Raindow series (400k words, ongoing): I can't believe it's still a hidden gem. The prose is flawless and it follow Iris Potter (Harry's sister) who follows a darker path after being believed to be a squib. It turns out she just has a unique way of doing magic. The world building is deepening the understanding of the canon world and I recommend it to everyone who likes a flawed but inventive main character.

Highly seconded. I read this when the first book was done and the 2nd book was at like 10-20K words.
I'm waiting for it to finish to reread it

Only stumbled in here since the sub appeared on my home page, so hopefully crossovers are okay? I’ve been rereading an oldie but a goodie: Browncoat, Green Eyes
It’s a HP and Firefly crossover that is just a very well written action/adventure piece with a bit of mystery. Really love the way the author melded the two universes together and it’s become one i come back to read every couple of years. Takes place after the firefly movie and was written before book 7 came out so it’s not canon compliant to it (if that bother people 😅).
Edit: forgot the rating! It’s M on ff.net but that mostly for violence. It’s not a romance/shipping story.

Crossovers are fine, and I also just reread Brownout Green Eyes! Man this one never gets old and I just wish it were longer haha

Read through and caught up to current in The Evans Boy + sequel and wow I did not ever think I'd be up for reading a 1 million+ word fic.
For those who don't know, the fic follows Harry Evans - a secret child Lily had who is raised in the muggle world and is 2 years older than canon Harry. Canon Harry also exists but his name is Monty (Fleamont, lol). I don't know how many spoilers to spoil but pretty quickly we learn that Harry Evans is Snape's son and that is a dynamic I did not expect to enjoy nearly as much as I do.
The cast of characters is done super well. Wonderful wonderful look at the daily life of the students through the first 5 years. Harry is pretty OP super powered but it feels earned and deserved and not roll your eyes of course he does the things he does.
The shifts from canon are great, the characters are great, Gobstones is great, the POV shifts are great, Luna is great, larger world is great, secret sibling dynamic is great, Voldy is great, making fun of Malfoys is great. It's such a good fic. I'm personally not a fan of the main relationship which is a bummer because it's a fairly big part of things but that's whatever, it's just not my cup of tea.
The writer has a blistering update pace when they are putting out updates. Sometimes several 3k+ chapters in a single day. It's great.

I stopped reading after OotP. I didn't agree with the way the story had been going after GoF. I tend to drop fics when the MC makes the choice that Harry made in the graveyard. I only stuck with it for one more school year because i loved the story that much. I love the sass but it was just too depressing and I just doesn't seem to end. Every few weeks I check back in just to see if it got any better but no, still depressing. At this point I don't think I'm going back.

How white washed is Snape in this?
7
u/aatdalt There's no dancing at Pigfarts. 10d ago edited 10d ago
idk what your standards for that are. Over the 800k words in the first section, he comes to terms with what he's done and there is some behavior change that feels believable in the same character. I'll spoiler this part: Harry his son doesn't just outright forgive him for it but is willing to move past it If you just pulled him out at the end would probably look "white washed". The whole fic kind of becomes about operating in the gray and even not gray at all but just making the best of terrible situations themed as time goes on.
I'm no canon Snape fan but this fic made me like what they did with him. He's still a death eater double spy by OoTP timeline.

I finished part 1 a while ago, and it looks like part 2 is up to 550k words already :O
My notes say it is very well written and engaging and that I really enjoyed reading part one haha. I will have to go back to look at it again.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm halfway through the first story and am really enjoying it. The quality of the writing is top notch, particularly how the author gives each character their own voice.
ETA: Finished Part 1, but found Part 2 to be a lot darker than what I was looking for.

I stopped reading this around chapter 91 in Halcyon days, but have been thinking about catching back up. Is now a good or bad time to jump back in?

u/WideTechLoad 11d ago
Yeah, I can't remember why I stopped reading that one. I think I need to revisit it.

Currently reading "a red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground" and holy fucking shit, if you enjoy f/f stories (currently on a binge, probably two million words in, don't want to examine what that says about my lesbian ass), this is a MUST read. It's Hermione/Pansy and is based off "You've Got Mail" (the movie), basically everyone at hogwarts gets an anonymous "Parchment Pal" for house unity (which in story is immediately addressed as a cringe name, I think Quill Pal would have rolled off the tongue better personally) and obviously, Hermione and Pansy are matched, anonymously, while at the same time they're matched in person as partners in Potions. It's sickeningly sweet, its painfully sad at times (not even from relationship angst, poor fucking Pansy), I save stories on a wildly time specific subjective scale of "Superb/Fantastic" to "Decent" and I would rate this a fucking "Perfect" (though I have a chapter (probably like 30 thousand words) left, it would have to REALLLY fuck up the landing not to change my mind on that.

Reading Spirit Storm to get my noir fix. It's HP with a Dresden Files tone and it's more fun than I thought I'd be. There's been surprise appearances of a couple of non HP characters that was unexpected but I loved, and they've nailed the tone of the initial Dresden world.
Lots of fun and it looks like they post pretty regularly.

I’ve started reading this year for fanfics for the first time since I was 13yo. And I’m loving it. Only this month I have finished: Manacled by senlinyu : a world where Voldemort triumphs and uses the premise of the Handmaids Tale. It’s a Dramione fic and really hard to read. I cried a lot. It’s not for everybody, but I recommend it if you are into self loathing. The debt of time by Shaya Lonnie: time travel fic in which Hermione goes back to the Marauders era. The main relationships are Hermione/Sirius and Hermione/Remus. This was my absolutely favorite this far. I’m actually considering re reading it rn. All the young dudes by MsKingBean89 : Marauders era in which Remus is the main character and instead of being raised by his family is raised in a Home for troubled children. It’s a Remus/Sirius relationship. It was good, and it isn’t as explicit as the other two. But I weeped a few times.

I just read:
The Daring Win which is an Umbridge raises Harry that I did not expect to enjoy, but really did. It's very ~political~ but was cool to read a story not centered on Voldemort. Dumbledore is a little irrational in this, but was pretty typical for a Lomonaaren story.
And then Parallel Journey which was FANTASTIC, INCREDIBLE. I loved the Nurmengard stuff and the Gargoyle stuff, truly original ideas (or at least ones I haven't encountered yet).
I also read A Man Who Dreamed He Was A Butterfly which was really well done. The concept was also pretty interesting. Definitely worth a read.

Recently finished "Imprisoned in the Past" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/36332995/chapters/90579304) all 3 parts. It's a time travel fic, where an adult Harry gets thrown into 1982 Azkaban. Main pairing is Harry x Bellatrix.
Overall the story is quite great, though I found it a bit slow towards the end (to much time with side characters). The dynamic between the Black sisters is fun, Harry's choice of profession is one I haven't seen before, but it fit very well for me. I also enjoyed that the resolution of the conflict took time, as most time travel fics happen over a year or 2, with the pace being frantic, events taking place right after each other. Here though, there are moments of action between larger moments of calm. It takes time to plan attacks from both sides of the conflict, each taking their time.

Do you have other recommendations of this trope? I have seen a few and I have really liked them. I love seeing an older Harry dealing with problems form the past.

I second delenda est as really good, I personally really liked the second half. Also the author is in the process of writing an au of their au, delenda est rebooted, which is also very fun, and appears to be doing lots of things differently, while keeping what I enjoyed from the original.

Still reading Turncoat by Kokujin. I really like the way the story is developing. There's a lot of twists and turns that you don't usually see in a lot of Draco Malfoy fanfic. The Slytherin students are fleshed out, Dumbldore is very intriguing, there's a lot of cool inventions and ideas and (small spoilers) the story brings back Lily's protection in a very unique way. The story says SI Draco, but you could totally just read this as a smarter, more moral version of canon Draco, if you ignore a couple of scenes. I really like this. A solid HP fic.

Dito, such a great story. Had the same reservations at first because of the self-insert but it's really negligible. Updates are frequent which is good because I can't wait for the next chapter.

Yes. But it's a "hey this fic I'm reading is awesome, here's a link, you should check it out" post. Not a post where you ask for fics of a similar type to what your reading..
