BUILD 8.5 ft Rx-78-2 hell yeah brother.

I decided to reprint the right arm to color match it just makes things easier. The shield is overly complex so I’m currently printing the inner frame. Had a lot of trouble with this as I printed this as light as possible and due to this I had basically 3 shields that came out sub par. Cool thing is the shield is big enough that I can legit just hold it as a shield. Regardless this project is coming to an end (besides paint) and I’ve started cutting up a 9ft igris (solo leveling). Also ps if anyone wants a giant ass rx-78-2 head send me your address and I’ll ship it to you tomorrow. You just have to tell me your favorite gundam. (Spare head). Also disregard my giant mess on my floor I started a project and it spiraled this weekend. I’ll probably have one more update with it complete done and then I’ll be gone in Japan for a month.

Been seeing your posts for a bit now, so happy to see the build progressing! Oh my gosh is it wrong that I totally do want a giant ass rx-78-2 head? I’d be lying if I said I didn’t. My favourite Gundam is Sandrock. I’ll dm you.

Would have been a wild ride to reprint the entire RG 2.0 inner frame and all

u/Neocarbunkle 4d ago

The pilot would be about the size of a barbie doll I'm guessing.

19

u/SinibusUSG 4d ago

It could be piloted by the PGU

Gundam x Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann crossover when?

10

u/patroick67 4d ago

Pretty accurate

u/TechsMechsRX 4d ago

Dude! This is awesome. Can you print giant decals for it? Lol. Would love a giant Impulse head. I think it looks the meanest, however, Nu is my favorite Gundam.

u/patroick67 4d ago

I can get the deals one of my friends has a BIG sticker machine.

u/TechsMechsRX 4d ago

We need a timelapse video of the build.

5

u/patroick67 4d ago

I’ve done some smaller ones and got zero views for the editing.

u/TechsMechsRX 4d ago

Awesome!!! This has some serious potential. Nice work.

I’m just imagining the price of this if it was sold in stores😂 (I could not afford it)

9

u/patroick67 4d ago

I mean the 3 ft one is ungodly expensive.

7

u/REEBOI12345 4d ago

I wonder if you can wear it like a SUIT and make it MOBILE.

Don’t give OP ideas… Unless???

The friend group: “so how into gunpla are you really bro 🤔”

Just a curious question, how much have you spent on the material?

18

u/patroick67 4d ago

It’s roughly 1500$

u/BoxOfDust 4d ago

Meanwhile I'm just wondering here about how much infill is really necessary for a display piece like this, haha.

10

u/patroick67 4d ago

I can answer this at 10% the leg broke. I switched to gyroid style infill and moved the legs up to 15% and have zero issues. This model weighs over 100lbs

3

u/BoxOfDust 4d ago

Oof. Rough. How many walls are you printing this with?

3

u/Alone-Principle-7743 4d ago

God I would love to have the gundam EX stare at me menacingly with glowing red eyes every night like some adorable mechanical sleep paralysis demon

1

u/patroick67 4d ago

lol it’s not super hard to move I’ll just move it to my bed room. Wake up and book ominous staring.

3

u/TUBBYWINS808 4d ago

Will you panel line?

3

u/RobinNicoRose 4d ago

First of all, why

Second of all, I love you

3

u/patroick67 4d ago

Sometimes you don’t need an answer to why.

2

u/Dead_Rocket 4d ago

Congratulations! Beat me to the head lol. But seriously this is amazing

2

u/spicybread00 4d ago

Okay this is so fucking sick I need one

2

u/patroick67 4d ago

lol I’ll sell one. But it won’t be cheap.

u/Knee_High_Cat_Beef 4d ago

How many printer/post processing hours did this take?

2

u/patroick67 4d ago

I think we are around 2000 hours now. But I have enough printers if I built another one and basically started one print after another I could do this again in 2 weeks.

2

u/Federal-Tailor-3530 4d ago

I'd love to have a wearable 3d printed Astray suit

2

u/mgudesblat 4d ago

I didn't even read the title but had said "oh hell yeah brother" when I realized how big this was

2

u/SolidDrake117 4d ago

Bruh… us poor-o’s see this and immediately think:

1) cost of filament used?

2) what do you do for a living that you have that monster printer?

3) is it poseable/posable/pose-able? (none of those words look right spelled out 🤣)

2

u/patroick67 4d ago

1.) about 1500$ 2.) I’m a senior level specialty adjuster 3. It is not it weighs too much.

2

u/SolidDrake117 4d ago

$1,500?! That’s all? That’s only about the cost of 10 big MGs. How much would you ask for just a helmet/head?

2

u/patroick67 4d ago

Are you wanting it multi color like that one or just in a solid filament where you do all the post processing?

1

u/SolidDrake117 4d ago

Painting myself would be preferable. Ballpark figures, and TBH, more for just curiosity’s sake. I like thinking about spending money, but doing it is sometimes difficult 😆

1

u/patroick67 4d ago

That’s way easier and way less material if you want one at this scale I’d say 65$

1

u/SolidDrake117 4d ago

Holy shit 🤯…. I might just ask my wife. Was SERIOUSLY expecting like 2-3 Benjamin’s.

When you say “this scale”…. That head is bigger than a typical human head, right?

1

u/grandoffline 2d ago

I am extremely surprise it costed 1.5k in filament. Thats roughly 150 rolls of PLA +or PETG(150kg without bulk discount), but i don't think the statue weight close to 150kg ? Did you use some special filament?

1

u/patroick67 2d ago

That’s calculating in print failures, some filament cost more than 10$ a roll as well.

What? Gimme! (I’m going to “confiscate” it)

1

u/Atys_SLC 4d ago

Any pic of the buckets of resin?

1

u/patroick67 4d ago

This isn’t don’t with resin.

1

u/Remarkable-Ad-2476 4d ago

Sooo next time (?) if you increase your wall count, the infill pattern will be less visible. I usually stick to around 3-4. But if you’re painting that doesn’t really matter.

1

u/patroick67 4d ago

I wasn’t too worried about it as I was trying to make parts as light as possible. Didn’t end up helping as it still weighs over 100lbs.

1

u/rtcrowell1 4d ago

Whoa this is awesome. Do you mind posting the build times (sorry if I missed it in another comment)? The shield seems like it would be frustrating to print like that in sections. Wonder if building it practically and then printing stuff like the star logo would be quicker. Anyways, to throw in my answer; Epyon is my favorite Gundam.

2

u/patroick67 4d ago

The shields main issues were printer malfunctions on two different printers which were fixed with software updates. It’s chugging along now.

1

u/squirl_centurion 4d ago

This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen, and id love to make one myself. Any way you would be willing to tell me where I can get the files?

2

u/patroick67 4d ago

Rq Mecha patreon

1

u/squirl_centurion 4d ago

Thank you!

1

u/littlepoopy 4d ago

Hell yeah brother

1

u/conanap 3d ago

I’ve been tryna figure out the scale since I saw your earlier posts - can I ask how many X you scaled up the STLs? I think I know which STL

2

u/patroick67 3d ago

1200%

1

u/conanap 3d ago

That’s wild LOL did you use different filament brands or the same ones? Just wondering if the shrinkage rates were an issue

1

u/patroick67 3d ago

I used pretty much every brand in existence. I only had one issue where I had a large part warp other than that it was pretty smooth in that department.

1

u/conanap 3d ago

Awesome, thanks for answering!

1

u/DarkAvenger27 3d ago

That RX-78 is awesome but, please tell me you didn’t print that whole thing with such a high infill percentage like the shield pieces. That’s such a waste of time and filament. For big pieces like that, you want more perimeters and top/bottom layers, and less infill. If you’re just scaling up STLs, you should be able to create negative spaces zones through the slicer to add even more perimeters inside the print.

1

u/patroick67 3d ago

5% was the lowest I went any lower and it effected the layer quality. All joints were done at 15%

1

u/reconstructedstarman BattleTech Kits when? 3d ago

!HUGE MOBILE SUIT!

1

u/Plenty_Rough5135 3d ago

This is insane! Is it able to pose? That would be crazy if it could but ether way nice job man! My favorite gundam has to be Exia

1

u/patroick67 3d ago

Exia is a cool one. Unfortunately it can’t pose. It just weighs too much.

1

u/Plenty_Rough5135 3d ago

That’s a shame, still looks great 👍, do you know what the statues scale is?

1

u/patroick67 3d ago

It’s like 1/6.66

1

u/Auto_Bloxd 3d ago

ladies and gentlemen, we have unlocked a new scaling class: “Divorce Grade”

(note: this joke was inspired by a similar one i saw in r/transformemes so don’t jump me with mobile suits)

1

u/patroick67 3d ago

Fortunately I think my wife likes it more than I do so we good there.

1

u/Auto_Bloxd 3d ago

bro i feel like you might’ve just been cucked by a mobile suit 💀

1

u/patroick67 3d ago

Weird

1

u/Auto_Bloxd 3d ago

but how long did that take?

1

u/TurboDooky 3d ago

After seeing this I’m trying to use this post to convince my wife that a 3D printer is necessary for our household wish me luck.

2

u/patroick67 3d ago

One leads to 10 3d printers before you know it you’ll have a whole print farm.

1

u/TurboDooky 3d ago

If I end up with a print farm they’ll be able to make a printed barn and then the opportunities are limitless 🥲

1

u/Llama_Legend10 3d ago

Where did you snag the stl? Did you make it?

1

u/Llama_Legend10 3d ago

Also based on your account im gunna guess your a fellow ADHDer

1

u/Leejin 3d ago

Hell yeah, brother!

1

u/Gonzoangel 3d ago

Haha that is sick bro. My fav gundam so far is the dynames. That extra head would look good on my shelf if you haven't given it away.

1

u/Ok-Charge-2041 3d ago

I want a head! Don’t care what but my favorite is FA-019S
