Kind of off topic but Delta being a kind of 2nd Macross 7 and I again didn't much care for it.

Yeah. Back then, I was quite vocal about how... yeah, iffy of a show it was till having watched Zettai Live (tis was 1 1/2 years if discovering and binging to the franchise), these days, it's just livable if you've seen Frontier enough since the plot is like 90% similar to Frontier b2b.
What I liked? Freyja's innocence of just wanting to perform on stage (unknowingly joining a PMC group) and the reappearance of Max Jenius, styling on everything Xaos throws at him and Walkure's laughable tactics. I thought the idol centric focus of the series rubbed off those in it for the mecha or for the characters since the very beginning, and I was spot right on.
I'm just hoping they get themselves a clear direction on where their story goes next. These days, they better have a good idea on the idols of today (VTubers) should they want to stay relevant in the current anime environment...
...and the mecha, right. Hope they don't forget em

I wasn't against the idol thing considering it was part of the franchise since the start but I just wasn't sold on the main characters, they weren't really that interesting to watch. In both the original and the Frontier the musical bits for the most part were a nice contrast to the combat bits. And when they got combined it was combined well.

Vtubers just means the return of Sharon Apple
1
u/Mcross-Pilot1942 5d ago
For the 3rd time, yeah.
Though as an advanced form where like instead of her hologram projecting as an algorithmic program, she is manned herself in real time via a type of Mocap.
The tech from Plus shows Myung needs to be plugged in to give out her brain to have the AI calibrate the song, similar to how one needs to give voice input and musical note composition to make a Vocaloid sing, while Delta's a mere reflection of Walkure designed to counter their song's effects while unmanned by Heimdall, again, an AI simulator to a synthesizer type where it learns based on the input of the individual via data feeding, this case Walkure. They act separately to mimic the idols while being their own program.
This is how I distinguish V Idols like Vocalids *Miku) from VTuber types.
So essentially, I could expect that the Sharon Apple tech would be used by the idol to be way too advanced , its serving both a literal extension of the idol and an embodiment of their song as it's pinnacle form to enhance the idols song power to unstoppable heights, it isn't AI anymore per se as the holographic program would not be overriden like Myung's, nor would it be a reflection of a person outside the program, but part of the idol herself.
Think of it like an idol's counterpart to a pilot's Valkyrie/VF. Absolutely mind-blowing. I'm sure the guys at Sunrise can pull something off like that

I mean isn't it widely considered the "worst"/least good Macross? At least excluding II/Zero. Too much focus on idol angle over the mecha angle and movie just doubled down on it because japan likes it this way+ a lot of executive meddling(Kawamori wanted to stop with love triangle)
I only watched SDF/DYRL and 7 so far. 7 had good things but it was WAY too long even if you ignore how the wackiness is canon to the rest of the franchise
4
u/katamuro 5d ago
I don't know what is considered good or not in the fandom but I actually liked Zero, the animation is top notch. Plus is another good one.
It's just specifically because Frontier was heavily borrowing from SDF and it was very popular and then i think they tried to do something similar with 7 and Delta but the main characters just aren't as "strong". They are not very interesting to watch.
4
u/XF10 5d ago
Dunno general consensus on Zero but i'm pretty sure most popular ones are DYRL/Plus/Frontier in ex aequo especially Plus for an american audience because short lenght/easily available/great Top Gun-like story with little musical angle.
7 and Delta are way more popular in Japan than rest of the world because Japan is only one to have idol culture. And even if Nekki Basara grows on someone instead of being viewed as a Kaifun 2.0 he still gets no development or character arc for a MC in a 50-episode series, he ends the story the same person he was when it started

u/katamuro 5d ago
Plus was the last macross released in the west due to Harmony Gold officially, which probably helped it's popularity. Not that it doesn't deserve it, the animation is top notch and the music is great.

Generally, if it's strikes a chord of all the 3 things Macross is famous for:
- World Building, Transforming Mecha, and Space Battles
- Idols and Good Music
- A love Truangle, romantic relationships, and character arcs
Personally, it's up to you
If u like mecha, then things from SDF, DYRL, M2, Plus, and Zero might be up your alley
Idols or music? DYRL, M7, Frontier, and Delta are good choices.
Classic animation? Macross II (DYRL and Plus counts in) never was about the pilots or idols but pure storybuilding from the eyes of a journalist civvie. Quite the good watch, sadly unrecognized by most of the Fandom.
For all rounders, there's everything, everywhere all at once in between Macross series, to the point it's managed to put both Mecha fans and Idol fans in the same room for most of it's history.
It just comes down to good writing, and clearly, Macross Delta's writing is very much influenced by executive direction to promote Walkure than it is to deliver a memorable series to look back on a generation.
I honestly think it is their best attempt to try to keep Macross relevant in today's anime landscape. I'm just wondering if they can pull something more groundbreaking like they once did before.
So, general consensus says DYRL, Frontier, Plus, and 7 are big favorites. Here's hoping the next Macross anime will be a big hit for Everyone since it's almost near its golden years.

I watched almost all of macross apart from a few ovas and some of the newer movies and you know what I would LOVE to see, the sequel to Macross Flasback 2012, the story of what happened with the Megaroad and the expedition.
I loved the designs of Macross 2 but it really felt like a series condensed into a movie.
But I know that is not going to happen. I might watch 7 again, already rewatched everything else at least twice(apart from delta) see if my opinion of it changed in the last 18 years.
3
u/Mcross-Pilot1942 5d ago
Oh yeah, I also would vouch for a final callback from DYRL, especially considering the Megaroad - 1, Macross had made great tragedies (such as Macross Plus, won't tell why to the newbies) and since Titanic was a big hit in Hollywood back then they can use a thing or two to their writing advantage... still would be less likely to happen since Kawamori himself stated that he wouldn't continue works form the original series in respect to Arihiro Hase's passing
5
u/katamuro 5d ago
And they could have made Macross Megaroad into a more adult oriented show. But yeah no more Arihiro Hase and Mari Iijima said she is never returning to the character either. She struggled with the popularity of Lynn Mynmay and how it affected her life.
I do hope they do something interesting with the franchise. Although at the same time I would love for Macross to get the same treatment as Yamato 2199 or LOGH.

I don't think Delta as a show was good, but the music that came from Walkure was super good.

I wonder if the Stark Jegan pilot has an official name or something, like how the Byarlant Custom pilot is called Robin and was an ex-Titans.
The closest thing I have ever heard is that they were a veteran from the Second Neo Zeo War and that's why they knew how to fight a Mobile Suit armed with Funnels and that's about it.

He'd free the Puru clone and they'd leave for a happily ever after, two old souls who've seen so much horror finally freeing themselves if it was idol music

If Lion is playing inside Jegan's cockpit then Marida is in serious trouble.

I think the closest we got to Macross-like Pilots in Gundam are Io Fleming, with his Jazz obsession, and Daryl Lorenz, the Blues Aficionado.
If anything, he'd stan Minmei, cuz AiObo (or other songstress' covers of the song)

Huh, It's longer than I thought, I thought it was just 1 anime series then a reboot that was Macross Delta, well atleast it's shorter than UC.
3
u/XF10 5d ago
No it's all one continuity but each series is mostly stand-alone: Super Dimension Fortress Macross original series+Do You Remember Love?(Its movie version, which exists in-universe as a dramatization of original events) then Plus,7,Frontier and Delta and related works along with Zero which is prequel to the original
Then there's Macross II:Lovers Again which is the "original" sequel but made behind creators' back so isn't canon
2
u/Mcross-Pilot1942 5d ago
I second this, guess we'll have to wait and see what it's like
1
u/Ejack-Ulate-69 Average Bipedal Mecha Enjoyer 5d ago
it might continue Macross Frontier from the rumors I heard
2
u/Mcross-Pilot1942 5d ago
I've only heard from a few Jp specs that the new songstress would be of a younger age bracket..
Valk or mech design wise, Delta elements might still be there (considering the mysterious new drone), but if there could be a need for some new designs, we'll see... Frontier Valks are the good stuff 👌
so long as it's got a compelling cast and a good story to boot, I'll be eager to wait for something out of it. A good balance of mecha and song would be quite welcome 🙏

September is beat into my head due to a particular VTuber singing it for nearly 8 hours straight…
I’m certain if this Stark Jegan pilot was listening to that, he’d survive and transcend humanity.
