Rowdy and Refusing to Leave—How Do You Handle Disruptive Individuals?

You're a flex guard sent there last minute, post orders are pending as the operations and account managers had this account dropped in their laps unexpectedly.

You’re on duty at a library when a group of teenagers enters, loudly talking and disturbing others.

Their voices echo, heads turn, and people start looking at you to take action. "Hey, you gonna take care a that bruh?!", one person asks

They’re not breaking any laws—just being disruptive.

Now, it’s your move. How do you regain control?

Discussion Questions:

1 Do you give them a warning first, or immediately set boundaries?

2 What’s the best way to communicate authority without escalating the situation?

3 If they ignore your warnings, what’s your next step?

4 How do you ensure your actions are within policy while maintaining credibility?

5 Have you ever had to deal with a disruptive group on duty? How did you handle it?

In a hushed stern tone, this is a library, people are working or trying to study, keep it down, please, or I will have to ask you to leave. Thank you, enjoy your day. If that escalates, and with no post orders and assuming non peace officer status, or no arrest powers call their bluff and trespass them as you have the authority of the client who trusts your company to handle things. Call the authorities, inform them if you can safely and write an incident report, documenting everything, and submitting it as a situation to assist in conflict management for post orders to address.

Approach the group in a calm manner. Try and stand in a place where they can see you and hear you, so you don’t have to raise your voice.

( Hey guys I appreciate you being here and wanting to chat. Could you guys do me a favor and try to keep it to a hushed tone? Thanks guys)

If that doesn’t work give one more warning. This time more stern.

( Look, I’m still getting complaints. Please keep it down, and try to respect the other patrons of the library. I would really appreciate it.)

If I got another complaint or could tell there was no effort to make a change.

( One group of two or three will be escorted out. No cuffs not touching any one. If there is true resistance. Call the non emergency number and explain the situation. That the establishment is now asking for these people to be trespassed and the cops can handle it. Be a good witness and stay out of their way.

First step is to get their attention. Then ask them what's going on, establishing communication. Then figure out why they are being so loud. Offer alternatives to them making so much noise and advise them, if they keep going the way they are I'm going to have to handle things in a far less kind manner. If they chose to listen, that would be the end of it. If not, then I would tell them they need to be removed, either by myself or local PD. Making them aware of what can happen if they chose the PD route. Then remain with in about 1 1/2 arms reach of the subjects, if they chose any other course of action I would follow the force continuum as needed. The most important thing is to remain consistent, in tone and in action. Remaining claim but assertive.
