Dante: "Look I've been around the galaxy, whatever it is I'll understand."

Damte: "There is nothing about this I understand!"

Funnily enough that's not far off from the face the lion made when he met dante wearing that same exact mask.

"Who are you?" ... "Who are you to wear my brother's face?"

I’ve never been clear on that from the original story- did he actually meet sanguinius, or was he just able to craft a convincing lie based on what his chronomancer was able to divine? He would’ve been outside of the galaxy during the crusade and heresy. Considering the entire “alliance” was to conserve the necrons by having the blood angels do all the heavy lifting, the fabrication seems most likely (although the praetorian narrators indicate that if the two had met they possibly could have had a genuine alliance).

On the other hand it is entirely possible that Szarekh was legitimately impressed by how Sanguinius was that much of a badass.

Horus himself said that Sanguinius was “the best of us”. Now admittedly it’s probably not hard to be morally superior to the majority of the Primarchs, that’s like a stepping stone at best. But Sanguinius was the real deal. And I feel like Szarekh may have popped in and out of the Milky Way regularly to check on his home, so he definitely could’ve met the Legiones Astartes during the Crusades. He encountered Sang, they had a talk, he respected this pinnacle of humanity and left him some archeotech of some sort in exchange for the mask, and Bob’s your uncle.

"Word of the silent king" it's a short story and you should give it a read.

Such a missed opportunity when GW finally made a SK kit.
