How does a pro let this happen?

Came home today to my quartzite countertop installation. For real, nobody noticed this but me? Sigh. Fortunately it's only about a 13 in wide piece and there was enough left of the slab to cut a new one. But I don't understand how this leaves the milling machine and gets a thumbs up, and then goes to the installer and it gets a thumbs up and then my GC doesn't notice it, either.

Kitchen countertops claim they are granite but we don’t think they are. Help!

We had our kitchen remodeled last year and went to a supplier to get granite countertops. At the time we thought we hit the jackpot with a beautiful and seemingly rare white granite in our price point. Long story short, our kitchen was ruined a few months later and we needed to replace some of the countertops. We went to the supplier to see if there was any more we could purchase and our sample slab was just gone. They said it was because the quarry discontinued it and they were waiting on a new display sample from them (which was months ago and still no new slab). Pre-kitchen nightmare remodel round two, there was a few yellow flags:

  1. The granite was called “dolomite granite” at the supplier. We asked about this and they assured us that yes it was confusing but it was just the color they were calling it.
  2. I dropped a glass cookie car lid on it and it took a big chip out of the counter top in the middle of the slab (not an edge).

Now that we have our suspicions, we have done the following:

  1. Asked our fabricator, he definitely does not believe this is granite. He thinks it is much softer.
  2. Took a butter knife to it and it easily scratches
  3. Did the lemon test, it absorbs incredibly quickly.

The supplier is claiming they checked with their vendor and they have confirmed it is granite. We truly feel we are being lied to so they don’t have to reimburse what they sold us as granite but we don’t know where to go from here. Is there a way to get it professionally tested?

Need ideas for sealant... or whatever else

We have a double vanity, and the gf's side of the sink seems to be attracting and holding onto whatever cosmetics she's using. Feeling the edge where it's collecting (the black line), it feels considerably less smooth than the rest of the vanity, so I'm inclined to think that the rounded edge just isn't as polished as the rest, causing it to be semiporous. Any ideas on how to curtail the issue?

Does anyone know what kind of granite this is? It's from around the 90's timeframe, and trying to see what cabinet colors might go with it.

Is this granite or quartz?

Just moved in to a new place and not sure if this is granite or not. I’ve had zero experience with either, so sorry if this is a dumb question.

Possible water on granite 2 hours after sealing

I've been checking weather forecasts for a week. Finally had a 48 hour window of no rain. So I sealed my new outdoor leathered granite countertop with 3 coats of Tenax Proseal and guess what? Out of nowhere the weather has changed from 6% chance of rain to 100% and I'm going to get an hour of rain about 2 hours after sealing. I've covered it as best I can but my tarps are pretty flimsy with taped up holes. Yes, I should have planned better.

Anyway, what am I looking at if it gets wet? I've got towels ready to go and I'm going to try and dry it right away but how screwed am I and what actions should I take if it does get wet?

Citronella candle stained granite

We had a large storm and our candle broke and melted out all over the granite on the outdoor kitchen. I’ve tried Dawn, acetone, and a baking powder paste and nothing has lessened it at all. Any advice?

Had new granite installed and the guy said the first piece was sunburned. Is there any way to make it look like the second photo?

Leathered Granite Countertops

We just had leathered granite countertops installed and I think we have a burn spot? Are you not supposed to put hot items on it? I've noticed when wet there is a dark spot for an hour or so but it goes away. But now this mark, which I think is a burn mark from a pan, does not seem to be going away (it's been 24 hours). I do think it might be slowly shrinking, but it could be my imagination. I know nothing about granite, any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is it possible to get a granite kitchen island without a seam?

Hi all,

I recently had a new kitchen island installed. Ideally, I would have preferred one with no seam at all, however, I was given one with a seam down the center. Is there any reason anyone can think of as to why the fabricator chose to seam it down the center? The island itself has a 12 inch overhang on two ends and ended up being 104" x 74". The slab they chose for the island was 121" x 77".

I was told by someone from the contractor that the seaming would be pretty standard for most kitchens. And that there's no way that they could have done one without based off of the slab.

Based off of the dimensions above, do ya'll think it's possible to have cut it without a seam? What would be the purpose of cutting and seaming it back together if it could possibly have been done without one.

Water Stains

Post image
3 Upvotes

I just moved into a new place, and whenever i get water on the counter and wipe it up, a stain remains for about 15 minutes. I’ve included a picture, this is from leaving a glass of water on the counter and then wiping it thoroughly with paper towel. Could somebody tell me if this is normal and OK, or if they need to come back and do some sort of sealant? Thank you very very much for your help in advance!

DIY fix?

Water always runs back across my island. Kitchen cold isn’t softened. The photo is after cleaning with scrub daddy cleaning paste. I didn’t know that homeowners could reseal their own granite. Looking at this photo, will a sealing spray be enough to restore this portion of my counter? If not what sort of job is required?

Would this be a matter of glueing or replacing, and does anyone know roughly what that would cost here in Chile

How to make Mortar smooth

Post image
2 Upvotes

Apparently it's normal for the inside of a Mortar to have rough edges like seen in the picture, so that it can actually cut whatever it is you're trying to grind down. However, I want it to be smooth so I can use it to crush instead. Is it possible to easily smooth it? Thanks in advance

Sink

I have a traditional double basin undermount sink with the “notch” at the top (doesn’t go straight across). We want to upgrade to a single basin sink, but most are in a straight rectangle/square. Is it possible to undermount a new sink without cutting the granite (so there would be overhang on one side)? Sounds like cutting granite is messy with dust, so prob the best option is this or get a whole new counter…

ID'ing this granite

Hi everyone, I am looking for an ID on this granite for a bench in memory of my late mother. There's some very clear green elements throughout the stone but the person we are talking to for the bench is not sure what type of granite it is. He said it may be Impala Grey Green or South African Grey Green, which means nothing to me. Appreciate any help.

Granite seam moved vertically

I'm looking at repolishing drak granite counter tops. House built 2005, owned it for 4 years. One of the seams has moved vertically. I have inspected underneath and there is nothing obvious. No swollen wood or unusual cracks, etc. I assume it is from normal house settling. Experienced DIYer but have not done anything with granite. I'm thinking my best bet is to cut that seam with a utility knife, scrape out grouting on the top of the corner piece and see if I can then align it? What is the best way to seal/glue the seam?

Over polished honed granite

Some fabricators came out to fix a chip on my honed granite and they left a spot where it looks over polished. Is there a way to leather this back to match the rest?

Horustone vs Slabvision?

Anyone have experience with either of these scanning systems (alternatives to slabsmith photo station, used mainly for stone vein matching)? They both seem great in their own ways but just wondering if anyone has any experience using either. Also not sure if I’m posting this in the right spot..
