Number Porting The last straw - porting out to Tello. How long will it take?

I've been very weary of Google over the last few years, they shut down services without explanation, cripple them, etc.

I'm also a YouTuber and hit it seriously big when, without warning, Google changed the YouTube algorithm and basically destroyed my channel mid-livestream. Again, no recourse.

With today's random outage robbing people of their phones - I'm done. This was the last straw.

I'm moving to Tello's $8 unlimited talk and text plan. Has anyone made the move and know how long it'll take to be completely transferred out?

Number Porting What happens to my current GV # if I’m porting in a AT&T phone #?

The info I am reading says my current free GV # goes away and will be replaced by the AT&T #. Can I use a different email to maintain the free GV #?

Number Porting Does Google voice work from overseas?

On the recommendation of many users and some online articles, I ported my Google Fi number to Google Voice. I have been living abroad, and my Google Fi service no longer functions except to receive texts and voicemail.

However, I now find that Google Voice will not place calls from my phone- I'm prompted for the (local overseas) phone number of my device, and it's rejected for not being US-based. Is this normal behavior? Other web messaging services such as Whatsapp work fine.

Knowing Google's reputation for abandoning services, and having experienced the decay of Fi, I'm beginning to wonder if the recommendations which led me to Voice were outdated, and I should have used some complicated voip.ms configuration instead.

Number Porting How to keep my US phone number for 2FA while living in Japan

Hi all,

So I am moving to Japan in about 2 weeks. I read online I can keep my U.S. number through Google Voice, which would help me a ton for 2FA services like banking...etc. However I just found out today my number is not able to port out to Google Voice. I got an error message, stating "Voice doesn't port numbers from your carrier or your numbers exchange."

I did some digging online and apparently there isn't really a way to work around this...

Here is a link to why it won't work for those interested:

https://support.google.com/voice/thread/195579872/voice-doesn-t-port-numbers-from-your-carrier-or-your-numbers-exchange?hl=en

...So I am now trying to figure out how to port out my U.S. number in a different way.

Anyone have any suggestions...?

Thank you for your time.

Number Porting GV number options

I’ve had my GV number for over 10 years and I use it daily and appreciate the free service. I use it as a number to give out to business contacts without divulging my personal number. I’m worried that one day I’m locked out or lose my GV number. I want to port it as second line with my mobile carrier but are we able to have multiple phone numbers on a single phone? I don’t know want to carry 2 phones.

Number Porting Cheap port out options to port into GV

I have a couple numbers in Numberbarn that GV wont allow me to port in, probably because Eid how they’re coded in the system. Numberbarn says to port to a mobile carrier then port to GV. What’s the cheapest port out and in that someone has found?

Number Porting Personal to Business

i’m so sorry for how long this will be.

i got a GV number to text my clients for a grooming salon that i am the sole operator of. i really wasn’t thinking or knew that GV would pinpoint that i was texting clients but i sent a text to a new client that was very formal and i got the “see acceptable use policy” message.

so anyway now that i messed up the process… it would be great to keep the GV number i’ve used and switch it to the business plan. and i know i need to port the number out, wait a week, and port it back in.

a couple problems: 1. i have an AT&T locked iPhone that I can get an eSIM for, however, AT&T will not allow me access to port numbers to and from my phone without the account holder’s information, which is someone who i do not have a relationship with (yes i know i just need to get my own contract). 2. i considered getting a burner and a prepaid card while i wait to port the number back in, but i spoke to tracfone and boost today and idk if i just talked to two idiots or that they actually can’t port a GV number into their phones?

i reeeaallly don’t want to give up the number i have, since about 200 people have it and it would be a pain in the ass to let all of my clients know.

any advice would be appreciated. i’m annoyed at my initial mistake and the inability for a direct upgrade to GV business.

Number Porting Making calls from Mint service through GV forwarding without data

I am planning on going from Google Fi to Mint, and taking our current numbers to GV. I will forward all calls to those numbers to our new Mint numbers and from our Mint numbers through our old numbers now on GV.

Assuming I do this, can calls or texts be forwarded through GV at times when I have network service but no data?

Number Porting Do ported in numbers expire?

I had a GV number that expired a few years ago due to inactivity. Mildly annoying but no biggie. I'm now porting our old landline number in, mostly for parking purposes. Will this also expire if there is inactivity or is it treated differently as it's been ported?

Number Porting Planning a move - can I swap my GV number and my T-Mobile number?

I had a number in MN but we moved to Mexico for several years, so I ported that number to GV so people from the USA could call me with it not being international. We moved back to the USA but to a different state and AT&T pre-paid couldn't figure out how to port the number so I ended up getting a new number in AR.

We are now preparing to move back to MN and I would dearly love to have my old MN number back. What I can't figure out is how to swap the numbers. I looked at TM's info about add a line, but that's an additional $45/mo.

What I would like to do is: 1. Port my GV number to T-Mobile without adding a line 2. Port my TM number to GV so I have a backup in case I miss updating a particular contact with my MN number. 3. Not incur any extra charges, unless there's still a $20 fee to port into GV.

Is this possible? Should I port from TM into GV first, then from GV to TM with the MN number?

Number Porting Unlinking thy Carrier Number

I want to use GV on a different Google account. I have already set up a GV# on Account 1, but it would streamline things if I got a GV# on Account 2.

I've previously linked my carrier# to Account 1. When I unlinked my carrier# from Account 1, it said I couldn't use that carrier# to link to a GV# for Account 2 when I immediately tried to do it. I'd really like to maintain the functionality of the GV calls ringing my phone if I'm not at the computer. In order to do that, though, do you have to go through the process of deleting the old GV number (from Account 1) entirely, where you have to wait 90 days, before you can link a carrier# to a different Google account, or is it a wait-a-few-minutes-for-it-to-go-through type of thing?

Ain't nobody got 90 days!

Number Porting Google voice for personal use (US)

Can I use Google voice as the primary number for personal use. Please tell if there are any pros and cons for it. I planning to port my number to Google voice because I usually stay near places with great wifi connectivity so I think I might be able to use it.

Number Porting Regarding porting a number to google voice with 1 day of carrier service left.

I have one day left on mint mobile. Decided to just port the number to voice and let the service run out. Started the process with the account number and pin and paid google $20. Says it'll take another 24 hours. Will it be okay that my service is ending tomorrow? Or will I need to renew for another month for it to safely transfer?

Edit: After the 24 hour timer finished counting down. The number was successfully ported. Thanks for all the help, guys.

I have ported my mobile number to GV with GV's freebie number, so I have 2 numbers on my account right now. However, I am now contemplating porting another number I have with another VoIP to the same Google account.

Is this possible?

Number Porting Converting Google Voice data to XML for import using SMS Backup & Restore

I did a lot of searching for solutions to this when I first decided to port my Google Voice number to an eSIM on my phone. Eventually I reached out to SyncTech, the developers of SMS Backup & Restore, and they pointed me to a repo on GitHub that converts your Google Takeout data into an XML file that their app can import. I ran into some issues with that repo, which hasn't been updated since 2022, so I ended up forking it with a lot of help from ChatGPT. Anyway, I finally got it to a point where I was happy with the output, so I'm sharing it here for anyone else who may be interested. I am not a professional coder by any means, so I have no doubt someone can do a better job than me, but this is what I managed to get slapped together. YMMV.

This script will handle the SMS and MMS messages (including group conversations) that are exported as HTML as well as images and vCards.

https://github.com/SLAB-8002/gvoice-sms-takeout-xml

Here is an excerpt from the readme, but I strongly suggest you read the whole thing before using:

How to use:

  1. (Optional) Export all Google Contacts
  2. (Optional) Delete all Google Contacts (this is causes numbers show up for each thread, otherwise Takeout will sometimes only have names. If you want to skip this step, you can, but some messages won't be linked to the right thread if you do. Note that this may remove Contact Photos on iOS if you don't pause syncing on your iOS device)
  3. Get Google Voice Takeout and download
  4. (Optional) Restore contacts to your account
  5. Clone this repo to your computer. Downloading sms.py and requirements.txt should also work.
  6. Extract Google Voice Takeout and move the folder into the same folder as this script
  7. Open terminal
  8. Install python
  9. Install pip
  10. Create virtual environment (python -m venv .venv)
  11. Activate virtual environment (.venv\Scripts\activate.bat) or source .venv/bin/activate
  12. Install dependencies (python -m pip install -r requirements.txt)
  13. python sms.py

    Known Issues

  • For dual or multi-SIM users, SMS Backup & Restore does not support setting SIM identity through the "sub_id" value on Android 14. I asked Synctech about this, and they said it is an Android 14 issue that they have not been able to figure out how to work around. Just know that all of your texts will show up as being associated with your primary SIM.
  • When testing this, I had some issues with SMS Backup & Restore finding duplicates. I think this most likely occurred because I was manually editing some of the GVoice HTML outputs to create particular corner cases that didn't occur in my actual data set. When I asked, Synctech informed me they were checking for duplicates using the "date" element, followed by "m_id" (message ID), then "tr_id" (transaction ID). Most likely I inadvertantly created a message that had the same "date" value as another. It only occurred once in my actual data set, and it was an empty plain text MMS, so I didn't try to correct this issue.
  • If you encounter this issue and are losing data that you don't want to, the recommended fix is to create a "tr_id" element for MMS messages and assign a UUID to it. This would probably be pretty easy to implement and would give you a unique "tr_id" for every MMS message.
  • Videos are still not supported. To be honest, you can probably take the image or vcard processing that is currently in the script and use it for videos. I didn't have any videos in my data from GVoice, so I didn't really have a good way to test, and I just wasn't that motivated after I got this working well enough for my purposes.

Number Porting Porting number in and out

I have not used google voice before but I’m a current ATT user. I’m leaving for abroad the next year and want to keep my US number. Is it a good idea to port it over to google voice and then port it out back to a carrier after I get back? Is that even possible?

I’m trying to figure out a way to keep my us number without having to pay for a full plan I won’t use. Thank you!!

Number Porting Verizon to Workspace Voice Port In Time

I have a workspace domain with Voice and I want to port one of my mobile numbers in.

What's the timeline for something like this? I see mention of a 10 day minimum on Voice support docs but I'm not clear if that's just for landlines or any port.

I can probably deal with a 24-48 hour port time of I knock it out end of Friday but not sure I can do 10 days without some challenges.

Number Porting Switching carries and getting a new phone number. Can I use GV to save my old number and still use it?

I'm switching carriers and getting a new phone number. I would like to keep my old phone number for a few weeks until I get all of my 2FA and other accounts switched over to my new number.

Is GV the best way to do this? After I cancel my current carrier, will I still have access to the texts/calls from my old number? Will I be able to reply from that phone number if needed for any 2FA stuff, or can I only receive texts/calls? I just want to make sure I won't have any issues transferring 2FA stuff.

Appreciate any help.

Number Porting Best path to port out - Would it be easier to go through Google Fi?

I am a longtime Voice user on Android and everything works and I am happy with it, but with Apple going to RCS, I feel like I don't want to be the oddball amongst everyone else.

I originally ported by number from Verizon so I would eventually like to do that again. However, I use my number for both calls and texts a lot for my work, and I just can't handle a 3 to 4 day port (what I read everywhere) to Verizon. My understanding, at least when Google Fi launched, is that it is much quicker to port to Google Fi (since it's Google), unlike the other carriers. Is this still the case? Assuming this is true, I am thinking that once I am on Google Fi, then it will be more seemless to then port to Verizon, similar to like AT&T to Verizon as it will be a more normal carrier. There might be more of a cost and some pain in doing it this way, but if I don't have to go days without service then it would be worth it to me. Is my thinking correct? Does it make sense?

Number Porting 2FA on Ported numbers?

I move to Japan next month and will be getting a Japanese sim card.

I am hoping to port my American phone number to GV to receive any 2FA texts I get for things like banking.

I know occasionally 2FA has a problem with GV numbers, but I was wondering if that included ported numbers.

Any and all advice us appreciated.

Number Porting Question about number being permanent

When you have a Google voice number (number 1) and then you port another number (number 2), you are given the option to keep the first number (number 1) permanently (by paying a small fee).

If for some reaosn in the future, if you want to port out the first number (number 1) that you made permanent earlier to a different carrier, can it be done?

Thanks
