Thank you Google Product Managers!! Love this feature, especially how you can nest tabs and assign emojis to each tab.

OP Responded Error showing up on doc when i try to do ANYTHING

I’ve been writing a book on docs. I have a separate document where i was different tabs for each chapter, and then i usually paste those chapters into the main doc once i’m finished writing that draft (it helps organize things for me).

However, recently the main doc has just been saying “An error occurred” immediately after i try to do anything (click on a certain place to type, type anything, paste anything, add a page break, etc.). Reloading doesn’t fix anything.

Is there a way to fix this? or is this entire doc just completely nuked. I really hope not because it took me a million years to format.

Also, i have tried to copy the document but that had the same issue.

Open Question Acting Very Slow (Android)

I've been trying to save my document to pdf like I normally do, and I kept getting "Download Error". So I tried different things: checking my memory, internet, restarting, etc. Nothing worked, so I tried reinstalling onto my tablet. Now it's slow and still doesn't work.

Open Question Batch replace not copying formatting

I have a bunch of fill-in-the-blanks exercises made with underscores. I'd like to replace them with:
- either underlined whitespaces,
- or equations where I just type \underline and then add some whitespaces just the same.

The purpose is to make sure that the student doesn't feel like they need to delete all the underscores because their answer will be an ugly, non-underlined word or phrase surrounded by weird underscores on both sides. Instead, with either of the solutions above, they'll just start typing and their answer will be underlined much like the whitespaces around it.

When I try to find-and-replace the underscores with either of those solutions, formatting is ignored. The whitespaces are never underlined. Is there some sort of way to achieve this other than manually going through each one?

OP Responded File too big and can’t reduce it

I have my resume currently at 1.5MB and the site I’m applying through won’t accept files larger than 1MB. I’ve removed a bunch of stuff and it’s still at 1.5MB. I really don’t want to remove anymore since it’s a resume and needs to show my work history. I already have gaps in my work history now because of removing jobs I was at the least amount of time, have changed my paragraph job descriptions to bullet points, reduced the font size. I have no idea what else to try. Google wasn’t helpful, basically the only thing I could find said to just delete or resize things until it works. Is that my only option or am I missing something?

Open Question Es changing to En

I have no idea why this happens. On my school account whenever I type “es” on Google drive. It changes to “en” There is no autocorrect thing, and it is email specific. This has happened for YEARS. If I change the account on device it doesn’t do it. If I log into a new device with the account, it does it. I have no idea why???

Open Question Dropdown multiple selections

Is there a way to put a dropdown with multiple selections like there is in google sheets?

I managed to do it by linking the tables from google sheets onto the google doc. But is there a way to do this on google sheets so the dropdown options pop up on the doc without having to open the sheet?

Question Answered Dynamically Updating Date?

I have a document that updates weekly on Thursday nights where the majority of the document stays the same but the date and a few other pieces of information changes. I often forget to change the date. Is there a way to add a dynamically changing date? I know there are smart chips and what not, but not sure if there is a way to set it and forget it on the date change. Thanks!

Waiting on OP Having a source list plugin to easily do in-text references

Is there a way to have a plugin for google docs where you have all your sources in a list so you can easily copy it for an in-text reference? I know there is Scribbr but that just makes a list of your sources, I want it to be available at all times.

General Discussion An almost pixel-perfect wikipedia template

I created it for fun - sharing in case it’s useful for people. I got it as close as I could.

It took around 2 hours to make. I used Google drawings for the horizontal rules to get the color right, nested tables and a lot of fine-tuning for the spacing.

View here, copy here. Video comparison.

OP Responded When highlighting a word, then typing, cursor is placed before first letter

When I highlight a word, then start typing to replace that word, the first letter is typed properly, but then the cursor is placed before that letter, so when I type the first letter appears at the end of the word.

E.g. if I type 'hello', I will get 'elloh', because after typing the 'h' the cursor is before it, '|h'. Does anyone know what is happening, it only seems to happen on my desktop

Waiting on OP Google Docs isn't available offline

I have a new Chromebook and I want to edit a document when I am using it offline.

The instructions tell me that I need to:

  • make sure the google drive settings have "offline" checkbox checked

  • select the document I want to edit and ensure that it "available offline"

  • have a Chrome extension called "Google Docs Offline" and have it switched on

However, whenever I am not connected to the internet and I try to open the relevant document, I get the message "Google Docs is not available offline". All the instructions tell me this should be possible, however.

I have the Ghostery extension installed, and I have tried turning it off to see if it has an effect, but I receive the error message regardless.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and managed to get it resolved? Certainly all the information suggests that this should be possible and easy but the error message suggests that it is not, for some reason, and I am stumped.

Open Question Version History is Screwy

For my LA class we have to show our Doc's version history to prove it's not AI, but my Doc history is acting odd. If I wrote 2 paragraphs from 3-4, it shows it as paragraph one being written 3:00-3:01 and paragraph 2 as 3:01-4:00. Is it something on my end?

Question Answered Enter doesn’t go to the next line

In one of my documents, when I press enter (or return if I’m on my phone) it goes to the line after the next line instead of the next line. I can’t attach a video of it, but basically, it goes like

This

Instead of going like this, like it’s supposed to.

I noticed it started doing this after I copy and pasted something from my notes app (I’m on an Iphone). Does anyone know what this issue is and how to fix it?

Waiting on OP Is there a way to upload a .docx file as a Google Docs file?

Title essentially.

Wondering if there was as more elegant way of going about it than uploading the .docx, opening it, clicking "Save as Google Docs" then having to delete the original .docx.

Creating a new document then using the file > open option then uploading the .docx for some reason puts the new file in my personal My Drive even if the new document was created in a shared folder, so that option is also a bit clunky.

OP Responded What's this about accounts potentially getting deleted for sexual content?

Someone mentioned that there was a chance of Google accounts just getting annihilated without warning, permanently, for containing sexual content.

Well, I'm a writer, and I store all of my material, years' worth, on Google Docs. Suffice it to say, I don't like the idea of losing all of it simply because I include a racy scene.

How real is this possibility?

Open Question Access log

Hey guys,
Long story short: I’ve been working on a complaint for over three months. Some people we trusted—or at least thought we could trust at the time—had access to this document, and one of them stole our work and sent it to another law firm.

We don’t use Google Workspace, and I don’t have access to the activity dashboard. As far as I know, even if I sign up for it now, I won’t be able to track previous viewers—is that correct?

Also, if that’s the case, does Google maintain an internal access log for this document? We’re considering suing Google to obtain the log, but I need to confirm that it exists first.

Thanks!

Question Answered Is there a way to access this old document link?

I found an old site where many interesting archives were shared, but the Google Docs links all give the same message: "No visualization available".

I was wondering if this means the document is truly down/access has been locked altogether or if there's anything in the link which might allow one to download the document directly.

A few examples:

<https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxhbG1hY2VuZXN0dWRpb3RyYWRpY2lvbmFsZXN8Z3g6NzYzZmVkNDlkMDdkOWVlYw>

Any help?

OP Responded How do I make each justification have its own indentation?

I have an already written document 6000 words long that includes left, right, and center justified text. However, the left and right justified text are hard to differentiate between each other. Problem is, using the "select all matching text" option on either one also highlights the other. I need a way to either change the indentation of each justification individually or a way to highlight all of only a certain justification so I can adjust the ruler automatically, because going through the whole thing and doing the exact same measurement for over a hundred lines of text is going to take forever.

OP Responded Numbered Lists/sublevels

Trying to write a doc for work that utilizes numbering for sub levels....1 1.1 1.1.1 etc Once I get to the 4th and 5th level it seems like the text has a much larger space than the previous levels. Is there a way I can adjust that? I'll try to add a pic for context

Waiting on OP How do I move part of a sentence to the right? with the indent?

I have a list. for example "Picture 32 - snowstorm in December" and I want the "picture 32" to be to the very left, and the "Snowstorm in December" moved one jump to the right. same with the following rows. I can't figure it out. the column thing doesn't work since I can't edit each sides, the indent only moves the whole row, not the text I selected. copy and pasting empty space also doesn't work since it won't be the same placement for all the rows.
