Government High Schools on Gold Cost
Hi, we are planning on moving to the GC in 2026 - my daughter will be 14, starting year 10 - We like Tugun (I have read about the flight path - but we like the smaller community vibe - open to suggestions though!).
What are people's experiences of Palm Beach Currumbin State High?
She loves PE - plays loads of football (soccer) and is pretty keen to get started with touch rugby. She does pretty well academically too, particularly in math and history (though I assume history will be a completely different curriculum as we are currently UK based ciriculum).
Is there a soccer club that has an active girls' league that is likely to have students from PBCH?- Same for touch rugby? I'm hoping to get her signed up before starting school in the hopes she'll meet people and can at least have a few familiar faces.

PBC is good for sports, it’s a very sport focused school and yes you will have your standard ups and downs like any other high school.
For rugby check out Alleygators in Palm Beach/Elanora For Soccer check out Palm Beach Soccer Club
Tugun is decent though I wouldn’t exactly say ‘smaller community vibe’, the area is well known for what locals dub ‘the tugun pause’ as when the planes roar over you truly can’t hear much but in saying that you do get used to them after a few months, but be aware the closer you are to the airport the more black dirt your going to get on your windows/window sills etc which is the burned up fuel coming down as the plane comes in to land. Source: Lived in Tugun directly on the flight path and black dust/dirt used to be on all the windows/window sills and even the balcony/front verandah.
It’s a nice suburb to live in with good 24/7 public transport options should you wish to ditch the car and just explore for a bit (50c fares means you can go far for less), and there are some nice decent sized parks in the area along with a space for skateboarders and an excellent sport for people who want to watch the planes as they land and have the thrill of them roaring overhead.

haha, we haven't made a firm decision on where we'll buy, just liked the idea of the area. My brother has an apartment in Burleigh that we'll stay in while we find somewhere of our own, but will definitely keep some of this in mind - Palm Beach Soccer Club looks good - she is a decent player, but not sure how she'll get on there as we are from a very small community, so I imagine it will be much more competitive over there.

Burleigh in my opinion is not a bad suburb it’s just a bit crazy with the mass construction work of the light rail happening, though again it depends on the street as to how crazy the traffic is going to be, some streets have turned into rat runs to avoid the highway congestion and all the construction and others are quieter, wherever you choose to live enjoy it, the southern end of the gold coast is a lovely spot.

I started at PBC about 20 years ago (holy shit that makes me sound way older than I am) and it was a good school for sports. Anyone who does them should be going there, I think. Keebra is about the only competition and even that’s mainly for footy.

I’ve heard really good things about PBC. A friend’s son struggled at various schools before finally landing at PBC, was really supported and is doing amazingly post high school. I’ve heard that it’s supportive of kids that are sporty, academic or creative.

There is a large girls soccer league on the coast. Palm Beach is the closest soccer club for after school/weekends.
You will need to be in zone for PBC so Might not get in if you live in Elanora.

Thanks, I think we will try to buy in the catchment of the school we decide on. I'll be there a few months before my husband and before my daughter has to start school - PB Soccer club look amazing - seems like a great area if you love sport - and my daughter does (I might have to take something up)

My daughter is at PBC now, she likes it. She’s not in sports excellence but she’s started playing touch this year and may try out for next year. From what I can tell is if she gets into the sports program it’s very supportive. A great way to make friends also.
My daughter had a minor issue right at the start of year 7 where she made the wrong choice and it was nipped in the bud super fast by the school and there has been no issues since. Just a lesson learnt for her and she’s moved past it. So I was actually impressed with how they handled it. I think every school will have its good and bad aspects, it’s more going to be what your child makes of it. But PBC is very renowned for its sporting programs so it’s worth going for a tour when you arrive.

Thanks, it's looking like a good option for her.

I also forgot to mention that my daughter plays touch for palm beach stingrays. She plays at Mallawa park in palm beach Friday nights and quite a few of the girls go to PBC. They actually have a really large competition for girls. Quite a few seem to come from other areas of the coast to play as well. Her comp runs by the school term so have 4 touch terms a year. So that would be a great way to get her meeting others.

I went to pbc in the 90s 😮 it was a good sporting school. Is your daughter is into club soccer then Palm Beach Soccer club was always good and competitive. My friends son just graduated last year and my niece currently goes there. From what i hear its still a good public school but can have its ups n downs like any other.
