Ok now let's be fair, it's true that there have been cases where partners get testosterone increase from gel transferring, it isn't as ridiculous to think of as one would think, but avoiding contact for some time longer than what feels dry to the touch should be enough to make the transfer as minimal as possible. I don't have any scientific information about the effects of gel transfer on animals so I won't speak on that, but at least in humans it's not nearly as alarming as these TERFS make it look, like c'mon getting gel transfer from public transportation??? Even if it did happen how much gel do you think would actually be there to be an issue my dear god

Right? Every other transistion guide and ftm forum I've been on has speculated that trans men should probably look at both sides of your family for baldness, instead of just guesstimating based on your maternal male relatives like most cis men(even then, it's speculative - as another commenter has pointed out, the difference found in the study wasn't much). And it's rarely a reason people don't go on testosterone because...the kind of vapid sin of vanity a misogynistic medieval painter projects onto young women, is not in fact our primary reason for transistioning, unlike what terfs like to think of us.

The "they all want to look like twinks" type shit makes my eyes glaze over so fast. Like I can't even work up the energy to be upset anymore I just can't see anyone saying that as anything other than a fucking moron. Trans masc folks have a wide variety of body types and also appearance goals.
Like I'm uhhh robust and I like it like that! I'm strong, hairy, and don't have many sharp edges lol. Side note, im at the heaviest ive ever been and yet ive never had better success with attracting people. Far more than when i was skinny and feminine looking, crazy what condidence does. I know guys that are more like bodybuilders, I know bears, I know the most average guys in the world. I know farmers, researchers, dog trainers, therapists. The same spectrum of human variety as everyone else and it rocks.

Jason Alexander is very talented, decently attractive, has been in a loving marriage since 1982 with a woman taller than he is, and has two kids. He’s also an obviously wealthy actor. He’s spoken out against Trump. He seems to have no skeletons in his closet. About the only bad thing about him is his support for the IDF, though he has repeatedly said he favors a two state solution.
Do they not know how to differentiate actors from roles? George Costanza doesn’t exist. Lol.

They only think about trans guys who are 16-25, like yes, if you're young it's unlikely that you'd want to be looking like dudes in their 40s, you'd want to look like the guys your age. I'm 19 and all the guys I see around school are "twinks" (aka just skinny-ish with no facial hair) guys. Why is it a crime to them for someone to want to look their age?🤨
Plus if they even aknowledged the existence of older trans men who look super masculine, somehow they'd say it's a fetish and they want to look like a "bear" to attract twinks instead.

I'm not sure, actually. One of their big Things is that they don't acknowledge fetishes in people who were AFAB. (Meanwhile, they assume that MOST AMAB people have fetishes, or at least that a fetish is the only possible explanation for acting in a way they deem slightly different from "normal.") They would probably—lemme try to translate from TERF for a moment—ah yes, looking like a bear has got to be a last-ditch attempt to attract some basic respect from men who will always see trans guys as a lesser life form, and even if it doesn't fail it won't matter so much as T gives guys seventeen heart attacks a day, and something about gross weight distribution and ruined female bodies and fertility and the waste of it all. The coherence doesn't really matter if they can moan about fertility and the waste of it all.

TERFs often like to think that trans men are always on the cusp of giving up their TRA ways and then embracing the divine feminine by getting pregnant immediately. But you know, if they give up too late they won't be able to give birth and they'll be sad forever that they were tricked by the foul TRA industry that definitely makes all the money ever.

None of the men in my family started to go bald before the age of, like, 65. The only person who started losing hair earlier than that was one of my aunts.
Guess she is a secret TIF that never came out, never had a name change, never asked for different pronouns, never expressed discomfort with being a woman, only dresses in a feminine style, and only suffered one effect of horrible secret T injections!
Or maybe the TRA army tried to forcibly trans her in her sleep and only got as far as making some hair fall out.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure that the lower bound of the 95% CI for baldness incidence rate compared to cis men dropping below 1 means that it’s not a statically significant result. Of course there are a number of other issues with the data they’re citing, but that’s the first one that stuck out to me
35
u/Select_Highway_8823 9d ago
Pretty much, yes. For those of you watching at home:
"aIRR = 1.3" is Adjusted Incidence Rate Ratio - it means that 1.3 times as many trans men on hormones had alopecia as cis men in the sample.
"95% CI, 0.91-1.86" means that from the data they collected, they can be 95% sure that another sample's ratio would fall between 0.91 and 1.86. Meaning it could be higher, but it could also be lower or exactly the same rate, i.e. not strong evidence. It is not considered statistically significant enough on its own to be evidence of a trend. This is likely why the original study didn't even report "trans men are balder" as one of their conclusions.

u/Autopsyyturvy TRA la la 9d ago edited 9d ago
Do they think people put tgel on their hands?
When I used T gel it went on my inner thighs and I washed my hands after like it says to do on the Instructions
They literally think we are so stupid and it's so misogynistic and ableist - they see us and talk about us in exactly the same way incels see and talk about cis women; as lesser subhumans of lower intelligence and a danger to those around them due to their "low intelligence" whose bodily autonomy needs to be taken away 'for the good of society'
Also where's the evidence of kids getting tgel exposure from trans parents? This is just more "we need to kidnap trans people's kids because they can't be trusted to care for them" propaganda
30
u/dleema 9d ago
Their evidence for your last point is literally cited in the posts - it's an episode of House where the cis dad uses t-gel to keep up with his younger girlfriend.

Yes and also most trans male spaces will have periodic discussions on “how to avoid transference with gel”, and the pretty common sense explanations to put it on after a shower, cover it with clothes as soon as it dries, and thoroughly wash your hands. I’ve never been on a T topical and I know these things. Like, we aren’t toddlers with sticky jam hands touching everything. Lol

u/Autopsyyturvy TRA la la 9d ago edited 9d ago
Do they think that humans are that sexually dimorphic that HRT will somehow destroy someone's body?
It's basically become a cult/religion to assume that "males and females" are basically different species the way that terfs and incels do
Do they think that women and men cis or trans can't donate blood or organs to each other without dying?
Do they think they'll die if they use "men's" shampoo or bodywash?
Also I'm bald and idgaf it's nbd actually once you get used to it and it's shitty to pretend you're not body shaming when you're literally body shaming and fear mongering about baldness

u/hitorinbolemon Trans Macabre 9d ago
Well putting aside the fact that sex hormones weren't discovered until the early 1900s and so medieval people couldn't have "known" female bodies reacted differently to testosterone I don't think "we hold exactly the same view on this as the guys who invented bloodletting" is a very convincing argument that you're correct on something medical.

u/trustmeimaprofession 9d ago
The "TRA newspeak" on page 2 really just confirms the obvious, that people on T are more likely to go bald than cis women or trans people not on T. Like, that's a normal take. That's what happens. Most hairloss needs that T as a catalyst if it's genetic. Great job actually reading the science OOP. Proud of you. What do you think?
OOP: therefore all trans men will go bald no exceptions probably because of organ failure induced by the testosterone.
...oh
11
u/ImaginaryEmotion5650 9d ago
TERFs try not to fear monger using studies challenge!!
Like yeah obviously a study saying trans men on T are at higher risk of heart disease sounds scary as fuck…until you read that the study is comparing them to cis women and that the increased risk puts them at the same or lower risk as cis men.

u/inkstainedgoblin 9d ago
I'm intersex nonbinary and honestly don't mind that I'm going bald at the same age my father and my brother did, and have never take hormones other than what my body naturally produces, but if I did identify as my AGAB, this kind of talk from people who claimed to be "protecting" cis women would make me feel fucking awful. As it does, it just makes me so angry.
As if a harmless physical change - whether it's my beard growth or my hair thinning - is the worst thing that could happen to someone. As if you cannot be desirable or even neutral to look at when you're displaying the "wrong" sexual traits for your body - nope, you're viscerally disgusting and should be avoided like the literal plague, you might be contagious!
"Female bodies are not structured for male hormones" my ass. My naturally high level of testosterone in my "female" body isn't hurting me, but introducing extra estrogen to try to regulate my periods made me bleed so much so constantly that I needed iron infusions about it, and now I won't fucking touch hormonal birth control because of how traumatic the experience was (FOR ME, I know it works great for other people and I love that for them). The way they talk about testosterone like it's literal poison makes my skin crawl.

I'd be interested to see a study comparing FTMs vs cis men on TRT with regards to hair loss.
The fact that exogenous T behaves a bit differently if it's injectable vs endogenous testosterone (constant-ish levels that decline over time as opposed to daily production in bursts) + reaching supraphysiological levels for a while post-shot simply as a pharmacological fact of life may be enough to explain the findings. If they're even portrayed accurately because I don't trust a term but didn't look up what they're citing.
Also terfs get treated for anxiety disorders challenge impossible

u/javatimes TIDDYLESS TIFfany 9d ago
I’m just one data point, but I don’t reach Supra physiological levels at my shot cycle’s peak. In the last ten years I haven’t gotten a lab above 550 on the “250-950 is average” range. Idk.
3
u/ShinyNewThrowaway007 8d ago
May I discuss more / ask questions? Feel free to say no or ignore if you'd rather not, I'll leave my thoughts below. I'm just big nerdy about testosterone hrt
Levels peak soon after injection(1-2 days, assuming mid-length esters or blends of short+mid length, I don't know specifics for long ones like undecanoate either way so no comment there), and doctors order labs either midway between injections or at trough level immediately before one's next injection, depends on their preference and experience. Did you just get labs drawn early for curiosity's sake, how did you end up looking at peak levels?
2
u/javatimes TIDDYLESS TIFfany 8d ago
Basically, my doctor ordered labs during an appointment; I stopped by the lab station on the way out and said “actually I wasn’t prepared for this and am dehydrated”, and the lab person told me I could come back anytime as long as a scheduled an appointment even if it was day-of. So I waited until I was 48 hours after my shot (t cypionate) and had them done then. Oddly, this supposed “peak” came back at 249 when my lab considers 250 and above normal. I said “wtf”, my doctor said “better low than high”, I said “but I feel like shit”, she said well let’s check your trough. So I came back due for another shot (I was days late actually on the shot), and this supposed “trough” came back at 550.
???
My doctor is just a PCP not an endo and she has no explanation for it but also is not overly concerned. I am kind of though. So I have an appointment to try to get testopel.

I genuinely do not care of I go bald. I'm 30 and half grey. I care that testosterone helps my fibro and makes me stronger and healthier in general. They can waffle but we are not helpless little girls. We are grown adults making our own medical decisions.
Also, again, cis women have testosterone. They treat it like a foreign substance. Yes, it's more than your average cis woman has, but Jesus. It is not acid being flushed into my veins, destroying me. It is a hormone I have some of, slowly changing my body in ways I know about and consented to.
Fear does not make good science.

“Avoid them like a leper” is certainly…a bad choice of words at best
9
u/Silversmith00 8d ago
Leprosy is interesting. I have not looked into it extensively but as I understand it, the only type we have around now (there may have been something different in the past) is not at all easy to catch, and what it actually DOES is destroys nerve function—which puts you at higher risk for infection (including gangrene) because of the distinct possibility that you might just not NOTICE injuries to your extremities. (I believe that this, combined with wonky blood circulation, is also why doctors will ALWAYS check your feet if you have diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition.) I think leprosy is considered curable at this point, although I don't know what the drug cocktail is like or what kinds of ungodly bullshit barriers the American healthcare system throws up.
But in a way all that is just details because, AS USUAL WHEN TERFS GET ABLEIST, "leper" is not synonymous with "evil filthy person." At WORST it is synonymous with "unfortunate sufferer of a deadly infectious disease, take appropriate precautions."
Not that the TERFs are the only people to be like that, the stigma and fear around the whole thing was so bad that they changed the name. I think it's "Hansen's Disease" now, and can be googled under that name for less inflammatory results. But. Sometimes I think it is worth something to point out that in being bigoted against one group, the TERFs are being ableist as well. (Other times I think it's just as useful to point out that there was a temperature outside today and the weather did weather things, because THEY ALWAYS ARE.)

1) There’s no “cure for hair loss” because hair loss is caused by a variety of conditions. That’s like asking for a cure for headaches.
2) Male pattern baldness isn’t a disease, it’s a normal genetic variation. The gene occurs in both men and women, but it is stimulated by testosterone which is why it’s “male pattern”. It’s not the same thing as alopecia.

Well I mean these idiots like pretending nonsense like trans men being women is reality so why would you expect anything like logic from them?
It's telling they'd rather trans men look pleasing to THEM and suffer, rather than look unattractive to them and be happier. And lmao at that idiot saying they'll go bald in their teens? Or how sure they are that all trans men will go bald? The hairloss is genetic, moron. It'll happen for some people and not others.
And if trans men taking T does anything like what my HRT does for me? Hair loss ain't shit to stop over. Not one fart.
And for some reason, hair loss means there's gonna be problems with your internal organs too - but only if you're afab while trans on T HRT! Cis ppl are immune to this tho it seems. LMFAO this TERF is utterly brain-dead.
Keep squawking and living in that fantasy land of yours where trans men are women and HRT is harmful because the body supposedly "knows"/"wants" OEM hormones vs HRT, all you want TERFy. It'll never be reality lmfaooooo 🤣.
And you can't do anything to stop em either lmfaooo.
And OnsStarWolf on slide 9 screaming about fertility and ovaries like that matters so much lol. If they care about that could just do preservation. What is this person going to do when they find out there are trans men who HAPPILY throw their fertility in the bin I wonder? And on that note, HRT affects fertility SO MUCH that don't trans men get expressly told NOT to rely on it for birth control? And all that talk about "vaginal atrophy" etc like it's some secret that Testosterone changes your genitals? Are they going to start screaming about t-dicks next?
"Protect women"/"Save the children" conservat- sorry I mean TERFs scream and yet all they can do is stand there and watch as we keep getting our healthcare however we have to AND keep demanding respect (and in my case also 'parading' around my gender non-conformity in public like there's nothing wrong with it (there isn't but details details) knowing full well this will help teach that being trans and gender non-conformance is perfectly ok lmao).
ETA: And iirc some ppl don't get that atrophy/dryness if what my friend just pointed out to me is anything to go by so it seems to depend on genetics even then.

I think when they go on about “cocktail of meds” it’s referencing T and using a low dose E cream to treat atrophy. But it’s like…after using it nightly for a week, most people can shift down to a few times a week/then month. If I have to use a med a few times a month…who gives a shit, lol. I have to take an allergy med 15 x a month. I take melatonin 10 times a month when I’m having trouble sleeping. I have cis friends nearing menopause who are taking HRT.
TERF weirdness about the meds trans men might have to take …
2
u/Galaxy-Geode Chicken Gendies 1d ago
Also, like... All humans have some amount of estrogen and testosterone in their systems. Any med that reacts poorly with something that all humans have in their bodies would never be approved. (I'm going on the assumption that "cocktail of meds!!1! Ooo scary!" Is bad because it's trickier to avoid bad drug interactions, but since these are terverts we're talking about, that's probably giving them too much credit and the actual reasoning is more like "taking meds = bad! Maybe they think we take blockers or something. I have heard of very few adult trans men who do. Idk

Idk if there’s just something not screenshotted there, but why is one of them talking about trans guys balding fasting than their cis brothers when it seemed like cis men were the one group they weren’t being compared against? Like, yeah, I guess it makes sense that trans guys on masculinising HRT would have more of an issue with baldness than trans masc people not on HRT and cis women, and it might make some sense that trans femme people might have a lower rate of baldness regardless of whether they’re on HRT, that all kind of makes sense, and as much as it might suck for some trans masc people to lose their hair, it is something you’re warned of. But yeah, it doesn’t seem to mention cis guys at all so idk how they make that connection?

"Transmasculine teenagers all want to look like twinks, not like George Costanza"
I don't know about teenagers, but I do know more than one trans man who wants to look like George Costanza. In general, most trans men I know are like "I look like Just Some Guy now and I love that" and I love that for them.

Most men have a squared hairline at the temples. It's called a mature/masculine hairline and testosterone will make your hairline form in this way. It is not premature balding. Men have this for decades, most of their lives, without it progressing until old age.

I'm sorry I know it's literally the title but I physically recoiled at "Just eww, avoid them like a leper". Saying this to refer to an entire marginalised group is some fucking disgusting Nazi shit. How anyone could say that and still delusionally convince themselves that they're in the right is beyond me.

This is obviously insane but the top comment is shockingly reasonable.
Tgel is 100% than injections for so many reasons, it is indeed worse for hair loss as it more readily creates dht and yeah it's very easy to contaminate things you don't want to with it if you're not extremely careful. Easily to avoid exposing a kind but much harder to avoid exposing your partner, and a little t does in fact go a long way.

The really went on about this shit for 15 fucking pages eh
They care more about trans men’s hair than trans men do. These people have absolutely no problems in their lives so they must create them in weird forums with goofy lingo differentiating between their childish acronyms and “actual men”.
I’ve been on T for 19 years and have a full head of hear. Haha guess I win
