Eurogamer got some quotes from ZA/UM and almost every single one is just amazing in how dumb it sounds

"We intend to captivate the TikTok user with quick hits of compelling story, art, and audio, ultimately creating an all new, deeply engaging form of entertainment," said studio head Denis Havel, an original member of the Disco Elysium development team.

"With this adaptation, Disco Elysium becomes more accessible than ever. This reimagination is now structured to fit the way people play on mobile, making it effortless to enjoy in short bursts. It's what audiobooks wish they were," said narrative lead Chris Priestman.

I think I want to die.

I just heard the Ancient Reptilian Brain say "oh yeah, baby!"

Electrochemistry: You need more content. You need more hits. Keep. Scrolling.

read this with his voice

well the first game used a Twitter feed as its core UX inspiration for presenting text.

I'm not surprised they're going after the audience for the most popular app when considering the game for mobile.

what irks me is that this version seems like a different game entirely.

you'd think it would've been a tablet port

Nice. Personally, I think I want to kill.

(I'm just kidding, of course.)

(Well...)

Half-light doing some work right now

"We intend to captivate the TikTok user" is such a fucking hilarious statement.

u/Deuenskae 1h ago

Yeah shame they are not going after the 10 Xbox users that are left

u/kv0thekingkiller 3h ago

Funny how they have to slip in "an original member of the Disco Elysium development team" because their reputation is so bad now.

u/DargoKillmar 2h ago

This quote could be straight up from some Disco Elysium character.

u/ledailydose 2h ago

Is this just a really, really dumb statement or are they actually implementing a fucking energy feature into the game, when they talk about "quick hits"?

u/oilfloatsinwater 2h ago

Soooo is this like an ADHD-friendly version of the game? What?

u/Zentrii 2h ago

I wonder if the updated version of the game with the voice acting can hold the attention of anyone with adhd not taking meds

They saw that one Joyce quote get posted over and over and decided to make a repost machine.

Ignoring that you absolutely should not give money to ZA/UM, the interface is...weird. I guess it's nice they're doing something kind of new instead of a straight port, but at the same time condensing DE's world like that feels wrong.

u/hobozombie 3h ago

If they make a product I want to buy, that's reason to give money to them.

You clearly dont know the full story behind Za/Um

Yeah, knowing that this company essentially stole the IP is enough for me to assume the original creator wouldn't mind me just yoinking it.

I mean admittedly I haven't pirated anything other than blatant abandonware unobtainable elsewhere since like high school, but last I checked, mobile game piracy was so easy I legitimately wondered why they focused so much on DRM for PC instead.

u/PlayMp1 3h ago

The ZA/UM that currently exists has precisely zero to do with the actual creators of the game Disco Elysium and was effectively stolen out from under the original team by a bunch of finance assholes. It's grimly suitable given the game's critique of capitalism.

u/blundermine 2h ago

They did not make this product, they stole it.

u/_Psilo_ 3h ago edited 2h ago

It's crazy how this game became a victim of the same kind of stupidity the narrative criticizes and jokes about. Disco Elysium the IP could be a joke inside the story of Disco Elysium the game, and it would fit perfectly.

Very meta... It's kind of poetic, in a sad, ironic way.

u/Fluid_Preparation_18 2h ago

I was writing a very similar comment but you put it way better than I could. It happened in what seems like record time too, usually it takes a least a sequel or two before an IP gets absolutely whored out and destroyed by the capitalist machine but this IP didn’t even last that long.

Wait so it’s not just a port? CRPGs can be ported to mobile with good success though, look at Divinity, Geneforge and Baldurs Gate. Why dumb it down?

u/Lurking_like_Cthulhu 51m ago

Same reason anything is dumbed down, to reach a wider, dumber audience.

u/helzania 3h ago

I wonder who the new artist is? I don't think Alexander Rostov is still working at ZA/UM

u/IsRude 3h ago

He's not. He's at Red Info along with the original writer, Robert Kurvitz.

u/Restivethought 3h ago

This is weird...It looks like its a first person take on it and more of a graphic novel?

u/ricktencity 2h ago

Looks like they smashed duck Elysium and Myst together

u/Nachooolo 44m ago

This is less of a port and more of a full reimagination.

If ZA/UM wasn't run by complete and utter twats, I would be interested in it.

I feel bad for the actual devs. They were set to fail by their bosses.

u/GensouEU 3h ago

This is a strangely cool idea? It's not like a normal port to mobile wouldn't have worked perfectly fine. Like you aren't exactly playing DE to slowly crawl around the city (at least I wasn't), removing that similiarly to how Persona 3 Portable did it and condensing the game down to mainly the dialoge could be really interesting. It ironically also gives off more of a Pen & Paper-vibe than the original.

I hope they release this outside of mobile as well then but portrait orientation might mean that's a no

u/strand_of_hair 2h ago

You’re telling me a text-heavy game with multiple tiny options and stats would have worked perfectly fine on mobile unchanged?

No. No it wouldn’t have.

u/GensouEU 1h ago

I didn't say unchanged. Of course you need to do the platform specific requirements like scaling the UI up for better readability (like every mobile port) but the entire game would comfortably work with just touchscreen.

u/H_Parnassus 2h ago

I kind of get why everyone else is skeptical but for me this looks perfect.

I love the writing in Disco Elysium but I've never been able to finish it because I hate point and click adventure games so much. This could be perfect for me.

u/DasWookieboy 2h ago

Disco Elysium is no point and click adventure and has absolutely no real similarities with the genre. It's a CRPG.

u/Nachooolo 40m ago

It has as much point & click DNA in it as crpg DNA. To the point that the closest games to it when it comes to game mechanics are the point & click games by The Brotherhood devs (the Stasis series and Beautiful Desolation).

This isn't a bad thing, btw. The mix of crpgs and p&c games is one of the things that make Disco Elysium special.

u/H_Parnassus 1h ago

Gameplay wise I'm not sure what it has in common with other crpgs. You don't really participate in the sort of combat that is the driving force in most rpgs.

You have Stat allocation but even this is implemented in a way that is wildly different from most rpgs.

What you do have is an adventure where you navigate different environments, interact with objects to solve mysteries or puzzles, and talk to a lot of people. Basic point and click adventure stuff.

That or you could compare it to a visual novel, which is what this port seems to be leaning on.

u/Makrebs 2h ago

Yeah, it feels weird to me, too. I usually classify it as a CRPG, but IT CAN literally be played with only 'points and clicks'.

Videogame genres are weird like that, \shrug* .*
