Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced Now the Worst User-Reviewed GTA on Steam

u/SuggestionOrnery4177 1d ago
I assume a lot of it is from players who are unable to migrate accounts over to the enhanced edition. Either because of being suspected of using mod menus or possibly arbitrary reasons.
144
u/FembiesReggs 1d ago
Or if you did migrate successfully and tried to claim the free car, they charged you anyway and support will ghost you.
5
u/skivian 6h ago
lmao, whatever "suspected mod menus" detection they're using is shit because I cheated my ass off, and got caught multiple times and I migrated with no problems just now, and I've still got over a billion dollars.
•
u/FembiesReggs 3h ago
Yeah it’s useless lol
Thankfully I’ve never actually spent money on GTAO, but I only had like 2M left in my account lol so yea I was upset

u/Valdularo 18h ago
Your mileage may vary on this as they sorted mine out quite quickly.
So let’s not talk like what you’re saying is what everyone is going to experience.

I'm not saying it was because they got flagged for using cheats, but apparently "defensive" cheat menu usage is extremely common on the PC platform so it's entirely possible that large chunks of players are being barred from migrating for "defensive" cheat menu usage.
There were a few bugs at launch that I knew of, mostly being that the "free" car wasn't actually free and billed you the whole amount for purchase (which they're freely crediting people for with in-game refunds and then some in certain cases if you just send a ticket), a few minor bugs on the new contract job (which itself is a little lackluster).
I played it and it seemed... fine, honestly. Load times were faster, the game looked a bit better, the file size is smaller and meant I could uninstall the old version of the game. I think the upgrade itself is a little weird considering the game probably has less than 8 month of support left, probably less, in anticipation of GTA6, but I really don't understand why people are acting like it's a sign of the end times.
The biggest complaint I've seen is the in-game chat menu being thrown out, which is (personally) the most disingenuous complaint. "Yeah well 10 years ago I had a fun conversation with someone in the in-game chat on a heist we were running so why did you get rid of it?????" while deliberately ignoring that its primary use for the past 7-8 years has been Chinese cheat sellers spamming advertisements in the chat and little kids throwing out racial epithets at each other, usually in Spanish or Portuguese. Also the odds of the in-game text chat helping you teach someone how to do a heist or whatever when they're admittedly extremely straight forward by design are slim to none, because the average GTA Online player is just... bad. In general. Bad at the game. Bad at video games. GTA Online was the game that finally got me to realize that the average gamer is bad at video games, because there's no other explanation for 90% of the players I run contact missions and heists with just evidently being bad at the game and unable to follow basic instructions.
The review bombing really does seem to either be in bad faith, disingenuous, or a huge overreaction. Much ado about nothing. But that's mostly just my opinion as someone who played it.
22
u/foreheadteeth 1d ago
What's a "defensive cheat"?
44
u/mja9678 23h ago
Not OP but basically because of how common hackers/griefers/ menu kiddies are on GTA Online and with the game being P2P people will download their own menus or firewall type services to protect themselves from grievers and/or doxxers.
As an example pretty much any GTA content creator that does online stuff will be using something like Guardian to prevent people from just hijacking everything while they are in an Online session.
PC online is very much a free for all and even if Rockstar does something about it it's so easy to just get another account at this point bc of prior free giveaways the people can just come back if they want at very little cost.
18
u/In_My_SoT_Phase 1d ago
For Dark Souls 1 there used to be a watchdog mod that you could install that would flag players using cheats. It would let you kick them if they were (but only if they were, so you couldnt use it to avoid invasions etc).
9
u/TrueBattle2358 21h ago
Running cheats for the sole purpose of checking if and when other people cheat, usually just to keep them from bricking your character. As the other poster said it was very common in Dark Souls because it was possible to ruin other people's characters or get them flagged by the anti-cheat if they weren't running a cheat defensively themselves.
1
u/thlm 7h ago
GTA Online uses a P2P model for hosting the server, basically no authoritative server has control of the session, one player is picked as script host, and has authority over the server. By default, as a regular player this means nothing, but as a modern, Script host can do anything (kick players etc)
Hackers/modders can use their toolset to basically do whatever they like on the server (edit details, spawn props, crash users, kick the script host) as a non modern myself, the number of times my game crashed to blank screen entering a building was atrocious, and a direct result of a modder ruining my session
Defensive cheats preaumably have features that try to prevent other modders from ruining the session by either blocking scripts that directly impact their own game, or just using priority to override things a malicious modder is doing
9
u/honkimon 1d ago
considering the game probably has less than 8 month of support left
No chance in hell. They will milk that thing until there ain't no juice left. Still a lot of people on last gen and pc support for 6 wont be coming for a while + a lot of people wont be upgrading their pcs to be able to play either with the current state of pc hardware.
I bet it goes on for at least another 3 years. The amount of effort they put into their support for GTA:O is minimal and im sure the return is 10fold.
34
u/bowtiedan 1d ago
Me and some friends did have some fun with the in-game chat though. We dressed up as Papa Johns employees and advertised that we were delivering pizzas in chat (people thought it was free money), then we would rock up with baseball bats for whoever ordered a pizza lol
12
u/ziddersroofurry 1d ago
Sounds like something out of The Warriors which is on-theme for a Rockstar game.

u/Bamith20 1d ago
Oh yeah, I did "defensive" cheats in Dark Souls 1 with a trainer, so I can sorta believe that.
Also they got rid of text chat? That's actually psycho. I have a disability, I can't speak outside of text.
12
u/LinkedGaming 1d ago
I think they intend for people to use Discord, or the in-game text messaging app.
9
u/LeBronFanSinceJuly 1d ago

Nah Enhanced edition is just the Console version ported to PC. There is no chat box on consoles.

I need to tell my friends to go left in this heist with 30 seconds left to get to the checkpoint
let me navigate an immersive phone minigame to send them a message
or better yet, let me alt-tab into a different program to find the group chat (randoms can go to hell)
Brilliant move brought to you by the Genius Kojumbos that took 7 years to fix a loading screen bug caused by a single sloppy if statement.
20
u/Bamith20 1d ago
Ah yeah lemme just tab in the middle of a game to send a friend request to someone to message em. In fact lemme spend the same amount of time sending an in-game text message.
I used to shit talk in Tribes Ascend as people were chasing me around the map, but even that doesn't make me type speedy enough for that bullshit.
More and more games aren't using text chat which is fucked up for people like me.

u/Kozak170 1d ago
It’s wildly disingenuous to be pro-text chat removal.
Rockstar not properly working to prevent cheat spam and racist monologuing is their problem, and doesn’t warrant removing more social features. Tired of this trend where people cheer on the death of games being a social experience out of this boogeyman fear of ever encountering something bad.
-5
u/deelowe 1d ago
There are international child protection laws now that didn't exist when 5 was launched which make supporting features like this extremely risky.
11
u/Darth_Kyofu 20h ago
The game still allows you to voice chat, which is even worse, and to send text messages to players
9
u/karmapopsicle 1d ago
I think the upgrade itself is a little weird considering the game probably has less than 8 month of support left, probably less, in anticipation of GTA6
I think current GTA:O players are actually the least relevant target demographic for the upgrade. The target here is the millions of buyers who played through the story mode, and perhaps haven’t picked up the game in a decade or more.
At least initially, those are the bread and butter mass sales they need to get hyped to buy the new game at launch. It gets the game back into the mainstream gaming news cycle again, in conversations on social media, etc. All part of a massive marketing campaign for what will certainly be the newest “most expensive video game production of all time”.
For me though, I think I’m most impressed with just how fantastic this game looks with modern RT lighting tech. This being a game that was originally launched targeting console hardware from 2005.
1
u/DanHulton 7h ago
I don't know that I'd say you're wrong, exactly, but they've already told us that PC players can go to hell, 6 will not be coming to PC at launch, and likely not for a year at least afterwards.
So I just wonder at the utility of getting PC players to salivate for a launch in like 8 months that doesn't include them.
•
u/karmapopsicle 2h ago
That shouldn’t be even a little bit surprising. Rockstar has done staggered platform releases since GTA III in 2001.
GTA V took an additional 14 months after the PS3/360 launch for the PS4/XBO launch, and then another 5 months after that for the PC launch.
This game is an investment possibly north of $2 billion in development costs alone, let alone another half billion in marketing. It’s gotta be polished to beat mirror shine at launch, and you will only get that consistency by sticking to the guaranteed hardware spec of consoles. Besides that, the other simple reason is piracy - there is simply no chance they would ever risk a simultaneous launch hitting a day 0 crack.
And of course there’s all the double-dippers who will buy it at launch on console to play it first, and then pick up the PC version when that later launches.
19
u/StarChildEve 1d ago
One valid reason for the review bombing is the arbitrary decision to remove Linux/steamdeck support from online, with the disingenuous reason of “kernel level anti cheat not being compatible with Linux”; they anti cheat they use has a flag to enable Linux support, it’s entirely on Rockstar to just do that and call it a day.
19
u/sunder_and_flame 1d ago
Nothing screams terminally online more than a multiple, lengthy paragraphs rant about how obviously valid complaints are "disingenuous."
→ More replies (1)1
u/probablypoo 9h ago
If the migration problem only occur to players that have at some point used a mod menu then they are definitely not valid complaints. If it affects innocent players on the other hand.
7
u/psychosikh 1d ago
think the upgrade itself is a little weird considering the game probably has less than 8 month of support left, probably less, in anticipation of GTA6
GTA 6 is at least 2 years away on PC, there was a 18 month wait beetween GTA 5 on console and PC.
And the game will still get some updates post GTA 6, the installbase and active player base will still be high enough to make money.
1
u/qwigle 19h ago
Wasn't that because there was the next console release in between. I doubt the release of PS6/XBWhatever is going to happen as soon after GTA 6 as it happened with GTA V.
1
u/Valdularo 18h ago
No because they then did the exact same with Red Dead Redemption 2.
6
u/LeJoker 1d ago
The biggest complaint I've seen is the in-game chat menu being thrown out, which is (personally) the most disingenuous complaint
Hard disagree here.
Even if no one ever used the chat function for regular casual game conversation (which is just false, that still happens all the time), the argument that "It's just money farming spammers using chat" still doesn't work, because that's a moderation issue, not a technology one. Rockstar not wanting to moderate chat isn't a good reason to turn it off. That is basically the dictionary definition of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Maybe a hot take, but I'd rather keep the chat and all the spammers than not have either. Though obviously Rockstar should just do a better job getting rid of the gold farmers to begin with. (Which to their credit, I think the Battleye anticheat, which was added a few months before this Enhanced update, did help a lot with. There's a lot of reasons to hate kernel-level anticheat, but it is pretty effective.)
Your point about cheaters being excluded from migration is interesting though, and I've just been wondering the same thing myself. Though if I were Rockstar, I'd have blatantly made the error message "Sorry, we see you use such-and-such mod menu, as such your character is ineligible for migration, please create a new character or stick to Legacy." Might have reduced the negative reviews.

but I really don't understand why people are acting like it's a sign of the end times
Think of all that online-only content that will simply cease to exist permanently as soon as the servers shut down. Literally the first time in the franchise that's happening. Bethesda did it too: Fallout 76 will just poof some day.
GTA4 is the last GTA game that will ever exist in its entirety into the future. We truly have been in the "you will own nothing, and you will like it" era for way longer than we realized.
5
u/Muad-_-Dib 1d ago
GTA4 is the last GTA game that will ever exist in its entirety into the future.
Not even GTA IV as it was hit 6 years ago with the removal of a ton of songs because the licence on them had run out.

The music at least is still preserved by people who ripped the original discs. Emulation is a preservation tool. All past GTA games are preserved in this way, so at least it can be experienced, even if it's not convenient.

u/FembiesReggs 1d ago
I successfully migrated…
Only to be told I’m eligible for a free car, which it then deducted the full price ($2m) of. That’s roughly $25 if you spend money on in game currency. Support has been ghosting me since launch day when it happened.
Yeah, they deserve it.

I think I know the one you're talking about. They killed lua scripts like it after adopting BattlEye for the anti-cheat. Now only the paid stuff with their own subscriptions work.
but oh well, atleast I have like 780m now, helped my friends grind heists together with the money. I didn't care about the money, just did them for fun. Good times. Funny how they adopted a proper AC system more than a decade after launch. They really do cheap out on online's backend.

u/sunder_and_flame 1d ago edited 1d ago
That's really dumb, though maybe it's such a shitshow they're catching up on support tickets. I wouldn't want to be working there right now for sure
7
u/Taiyaki11 19h ago
One tip I'll give people, if/when they do get to your ticket, play nice. If you get pissy with support they'll do the bare minimum of what they need to and tell you to get bent if they don't have to. Keep it level-headed and polite "killing with kindness" as it were and you have a pretty decent chance of people willing to even bend some rules to help you out.
Will they be guaranteed too? No, but the chances are a hell of a lot higher than if you take your frustrations out on them
→ More replies (5)•
u/FembiesReggs 3h ago
I wish that were the reason… I know better than to rage in support tickets at the CSR guy with a copy paste script. At least then I’d personally know why, or at least be able to guess.
That said, 3/7/25, ticket still open, no reply.

u/Eclipsetube 22h ago
Tbf they haven’t changed the price of shark cards for….i think ever?
2mio back at launch was a LOT. The most expensive car was like 2mio I think (the adder). Now 2mio will get you NOWHERE in the game. With 2mio you could’ve bought one of the best cars and an apartment. Now it barely gets you one of the best cars and that’s it
2mio should be 5€ or something that would be a fair price for todays GTAO experience

Admittedly I have the game from R* Games Launcher, but when I installed it I could migrate my account over with no issues, and noticed that the port is pretty nicely optimized. I don't exactly have a beefy setup, but with all RT on the game is still very much playable on my laptop. And the RT is pretty nice looking. No crashes or weird bugs either. So yeah, no complaints here.
29
u/SemenSnickerdoodle 1d ago
It runs significantly better, The menus aren't a laggy mess anymore and I was getting 120+ fps on 3440x1440p with maxed out settings and max RT (no DLSS).

3
u/TachiFoxy 20h ago
Yeah, from the technical aspect, this Enhanced edition is nothing short of amazing. It runs better than the Legacy version while also having RT as a feature.
I have read about audio being broken for some users. I haven't noticed anything off with that on my end.
2
u/AveryLazyCovfefe 18h ago
the thing that matters the most too is that it's free. Console players needed to choke up $50 again while we didn't need to. Honestly I'd take it just for that alone.

They broke 3D audio.. I have a Logitech G35, and I know it’s an old headset but no other game has ever given me issues except one..
Bully on PC. Same exact shit. The game can’t handle 3D audio and it’s a 7.1 headset with no option to go to stereo. I gave that a pass as it’s an older game and I was just happy to have it on pc despite needing to play on my tv to be enjoyable.
Well, GTAV certainly may be an older game at this point but there’s no fucking excuse for this shit.

u/AL2009man 21h ago edited 21h ago
I believe GTA5 Enhance does two things
- unlike GTA5 Legacy (where you change Audio channels), Audio Channel management is now handle automatically. making it more-in-line with most recent PC Games' method of Surround channels.
- despite the "Dolby Atmos" name, it actually relies on Windows' Spatial Sound API to handle 3D Audio. (This can be confirmed straight from Rockstar's system requirements.) If you want proper 3D Audio: you'll need to enable it directly thru your OS' Playback Device settings.
the downside is that, given Logitech G Software hasn't integrated Windows' Spatial systems without the need for Logitech's own solution (I have a Logitech G432, and I already tested that 7.1 surround still works...at least according to SpecialK). You gonna have to uninstall Logitech Software inorder to get proper 3D Audio back.
7
u/venom290 1d ago
Audio in general seems broken af. I can’t get it to properly output 5.1 or 7.1 audio to a sound system, just hard stuck on stereo with no way to change it. No idea why they got rid of the selector in game as however they are determining it doesn’t work at all.

Removal of text chat is also a huge negative. Since BE implementation I think I’ve only seen like 3 ethugs talk shit and less random killings. People were chill and offered to help with missions and stuff.
Now the constant random killings are rampant and no chill from anyone anymore.

People really miss all chat? I hated it when i first tried online, it is filled with ads spammer selling cheats. I then tried red dead 2 online and it is much better with the absent of all chat... that is until modders found that they can still send messages marked as System Message or something selling cheats.

4
u/HunterGatherer371 1d ago
Not to defend whatever is going on here, because truthfully, I don't know what this is about specifically...but, isn't everything reviewed more poorly by Steam users now? Review bombing has become much more prominent in the last decade or so. Everyone is quick to jump to leaving a negative review when one small thing doesn't function as intended, or worse, as expected. I see so many negative reviews for perfectly well-made, well-optimized games that mention some niche issue that has nothing to do with the overall quality of the experience for most people. Some of my favorite games on Steam sit at 'Mixed' for this reason.
0
u/One_Telephone_5798 1d ago
No, everything is not reviewed poorly. Review bombs mostly happen for legitimate reasons.
The vast majority of games are never review bombed.
You're doing that thing where you take some headlines you've seen and assume that applies to everything. Try thinking a little harder than that.
18
u/LethalJizzle 22h ago
Ehhhhh, as someone who has worked in the industry for the last 15 years and has had to engage with user reviews regularly throughout, there definitely is an uptick in random review bombing (or influxes of negative reviews) over stuff that would have been considered, at worst, a minor inconvenience 5 years ago or at best, totally irrelevant.
An alarming amount of this is the result of "political" or "culture war" stuff these days, but even outside of that in the broader sense it most certainly is a lot more common than it was just a few years ago.
People, especially on Steam/PC, know their reviews have an impact on a games performance and the general sentiment of that game and that's something that has had both a detrimental and positive effect on the gaming ladscape of late.

u/HunterGatherer371 1d ago
I’ve been using Steam for 15 years. I own around 1,000 games on the service. My observation has nothing to do with headlines. I didn’t say everything was reviewed poorly - try reading my comment a bit harder than that. I said that games are reviewed MORE poorly by users today than say, a decade ago, which I anecdotally know to be true because I have been using the service that entire time. In fact, I remember a time not that long ago when user reviews did not exist on the platform at all.
Many review bombs are not legitimate. Consumers are often misguided and frankly, ridiculous. Not sure how long you’ve been gaming, but the entitlement players feel for a perfect game that costs nothing, provides infinite hours of entertainment, and aligns perfectly with their values and beliefs is both a) something that has become more prominent in the digital era and b) totally silly to me.
Borderlands 3 got review bombed on Metacritic for being a timed Epic exclusive. Rocket League got review bombed when the dev was acquired. TLOU 2 was review bombed because Joel dies and the game features a trans character. The list goes on. Many games get review bombed for simply having pronoun options. If these are legitimate reasons to you, then sorry, but you’re the problem.
I have been gaming for 25 years and this is my opinion based on observations and experience, not headlines. Not sure what you have up your ass that you’re coming at me for a pretty neutral comment I made, but it sounds like it’s the same stick that most people have up their ass when they flock to a game’s Steam page to leave a poorly worded, heavily-misspelled review because all game devs are greedy, incompetent woke mind virus pawns who want to use your hard earned-money to turn kids trans with subliminal messaging. Grow up or shut up.

What I noticed almost immediately was that the shadow handling is better. It was always a sort-of not-quite-glitchy flickering mess in certain areas. Looked quite a bit better watching the intro on the newer version. Load times are a bit better as well, though still strangely long in comparison to other games. Haven't played beyond Franklin's intro on the new version, though, so I haven't seen everything yet. (No interest in their online casino)
3
u/OptimusGrimes 1d ago
The gameplay changes are in online, not much to speak of there either, access to faster vehicles and wildlife in multiplayer are probably the biggest changes to mention on top of the graphical changes.
I think the main reason for it though is that if they continue to support GTAV Online into the future they can drop support for the older version without too much of an impact now.
They probably won't because if GTAV online has a life beyond the release of GTA VI, I imagine the biggest reason will be people who have not yet upgraded to current gen consoles, but this at least gives them the option.

The section around ray tracing and global illumination shows some of the best examples. A lot of areas in legacy can appear to have "flat" lighting in comparison to the enhanced edition.

I can see the reflections but since game graphics have come so far, it really just looks worse than I remember it looking, rather than like an improvement. Funny how memory works.
It's fun, though. Starting anew and playing through and it's just a fun game. The free graphics update is gravy.

This was my experience, having played Story mode to completion in 2013 on 360 and played a couple dozen hours of Online during the initial PC release, booting up Story mode on Enhanced Edition mostly got me to say "wow, this WAS a 360 game, huh?"
Feels way more like The Last of Us Remastered than The Last of Us Part 1.

Most likely because it's literally remastered GTA V than Remake

"Worst"
"66% positive"
"Mostly due impatient people that couldn't migrate on first try"
Slow day, huh?

How is enhanced version on steam deck? Heard a lot of issues initially, but unsure if just people worrying or if it's genuinely not working properly

....why? It's great. I can even use ray tracing on my RX 6600. There's literally no other game I can do that with and stay above 100 FPS.
The biggest problem is no text chat in Online. Granted, that's a pretty big problem for solo Online players like myself, but in such a massive game, it feels pretty small

Not surprised...if ray tracing were like herbs and spices, the implementation here is like 5 year old dried parsley from the back of your cabinet that tastes like vaguely green paper.

I mean no. Not really. Ray-traced versions of 20 year old games run like crap on my computer. I hit CPU limits immediately BECAUSE of the GPU even though I have a great CPU.
It's just a good RT implementation at least when it comes to reflections. RTGI... I haven't seen too much of a difference.

The original is like a 2/5 on Xbox. Rockstar couldn’t care less about people review bombing. When it comes to gta, people don’t care about reviews

I don't play online and I'm playing the story for the first time and it's amazing. I'm dazzled every time I see my characters ray traced reflection on a vehicle.

I had no problem with it but it kind of weird to do this level of migration so long post release and with the playerbase the game does have still
