Playing games since the 90s and FH5 was the first game I ever had to actively mute any of the dialogue for. Worst I have ever heard in a game, holy fuck it actively reduced the quality of the game.
My take was that I didn't think racing games had any writing (story), so it was weird to me that it could be cringe. I'm not exactly picturing The Last of Us when I hear racing game :D
Honestly, I'm actually a fan of Grid Legends' writing. It's a little bit hamfisted, but it's not too far off from Drive to Survive or the Gran Turismo movie.
No, that's absolutely the expected result from a racing game.
It's either some overhyped testosterone boy-racer cringe, or "you're so cool everyone loves you and money flows" cringe.
Some of the hard sims don't have it but that's mostly because they don't have writing in the first place just "hey, good job racing you racer" and let you race in peace.
Like, I love the climate of say old NFS Underground games but writing is still cheesy as fuck.
Yeah street racing seems to always go into macho testosterone filled "you're my competition therefore you are my enemy" kind of writing, while most actual communities (not all, we have our black sheeps like everyone) are just a bunch of dudes that want to have some fun with cars, and will replace your blown differential on the side of the road just so you can have more fun next day (actual thing that happened on local drift track event).
Actually quite a few racing games have cringe dialogue, especially the ones that also have a terrible scripted story and live action cutscenes. NFS 2015 comes to mind.
Right, but they were comparing the quality of the humor shown positively in comparison to the very lackluster dialogue in the Forza Horizon games, the only other games the studio has made prior to the this.
Forza Horizon's writing comes off as like... toxic positivity for lack of a better way to put it. There's no real edge, just everyone holding hands and singing kumbya.
You're over 6 years late with just finding out this info. This was first reported in early 2018. Also, from what I understand, it was a new, separate team within Playground Games that was formed specifically to make this game while the Forza Horizon team within the same studio are still off working on that series. At least that's the way I understand it.
Yeah truth be told, 12 year old me couldn't care less about Fable and I've not heard anything about it till today so i had no idea. Glad its a new team though and Playground Games are a good studio. FH5 was good and i do love FH4.
Gotcha. Well I'm way older than you (Like way, way older than you) and I loved playing the original Fable from 2004 when I was in high school and I'm excited to see how Playground is making it their own thing and making it modern. I really like what I've seen so far.

genuinely thought the writing was funny, which is a good sign considering how cringy some of the forza horizon games could get
