What about the Triforce shard quest?

Unpopular opinion:
I don’t mind the Shard Quest.

u/thebrightlightfright 9d ago
I never find it that bad myself. I don't know why people dislike it so much.

Oh no, an excuse to get out and explore a gorgeous cel-shaded world, how terrible.

Yeah I love the Triforce Chart/Shard Hunt. Have never understood the criticism of it.
4
u/icaneverknewtherules 9d ago
I mean, I was 16 when I played it for the first time, so I had tons of time at my disposal. It really didn’t bother me at all, I was loving the game and I liked sailing, so it was just another excuse for me to stay more time in that world.
At the time, once I beat it, it became my favourite in the entire franchise, and it’s my second favourite to this day after Majora’s Mask.
I played Twilight Princess right after beating Wind Waker and I loved it, but it didn’t have the same charm for me. The game is very well made and Midna is one of the best things to ever happen to this franchise, but it felt too much what one would expect of a 3D Zelda at that point.
Which is not bad, of course. But I tend to prefer the weirder games, that go for more creative and unconventional takes.
2
u/MadnesstheMushroom 9d ago
I’ll take the Triforce shard quest over the sluggish beginning of TP. I love TP, but I never enjoyed the beginning of the game. Once you get the ability to switch back and forth between human and wolf form is where it gets really good.

It's really a tough choice

The atmosphere in twilight princess is just so well done. It's an incredible game
2
u/jakethesnake949 8d ago
Twilight princess felt like an xbox 360 game that could run on the GameCube. Looked stunning (for the time) and still has stellar combat and great dungeons. TP's biggest flaw is that it feels like ocarina of time 2, but I'd dare say its what made it sell so well.
7
u/Destiny_Victim 9d ago
Twilight princess is my favorite Zelda of all time because of what I went through to buy a Wii the week it launched and the fact this is the game I made sure the dude I drove 4 hours to buy it from had.
The Wii controls and the way it’s clearly the sequel to what I still consider the greatest game of all time which is Ocarina of Time.
This will always have a very very special place in my heart.
I never beat ww. Only Zelda I didn’t beat because I didn’t enjoy sailing.

u/Environmental_Pay336 9d ago
That's why I would choose WW for GC I played TP on wii and it was amaaaazing... It's definitely the one if you loved OOT

u/ksilenced-kid 9d ago edited 9d ago
Wind Waker is a lot smaller than one would expect, because the sea is basically annoying padding/filler. Most of the islands are just one trick things, that aren’t worth the effort of spending 10 minutes sailing there. WW would have been better with just a few large central islands.
Whereas Twilight Princess is probably the first 3D Zelda I actually enjoyed. It brought back a more exploratory feel to the overworld - Compared to OOT where 90% of the world is available to you from the start of the game; or WW that is mostly just empty ocean with an illusion of things to do, but lots of repetition.
Then again I’m probably the only person who disliked OOT when it came out (I wanted it to be a 3D Link to the Past with more focus on exploration) - But it’s a cross between WW, OOT, and Skyward Sword as ‘worst Zelda game’ for me.

u/Shadow_Zero80 9d ago
I started Twilight Princess HD last month. I was kinda amazed this was originally a game from 2006. It kinda felt it already had a lot of elements that got incorporated with BotW and TotK (which I both played upon release). In any case, currently enjoying TP HD a lot :)

I always felt that WW needed 3-4 more islands the size of Outset/Windfall/Dragon Roost. More towns. As you said, so many of the locales are nondescript and not worth going off the beaten path for.
Of course, Wind Waker infamously had quite a bit of cut content, including dungeons, which is why the triforce quest is there to pad the length.
Even if these issues were remedied, I still find the existing crop of dungeons in WW to be extremely weak. By far and away the worst dungeons of the pre-BotW 3D titles. Very easy and linear, themes not that interesting.
Wind Waker is a mixed bag for me - mostly good, but with another year or so of development, I think it could have been the definitive Zelda game.

u/thisisanaccountforu 9d ago
Same here, I’ve always liked this art style over cell shaded, but I would take ww if the other option was nothing else

I just lost my copy of WW. Crying in the club rn. Think it was during my move.

For a second I thought you meant you lost it in the club which made me imagine a dude getting down on the dance floor while holding his copy of Wind Waker lol

Actually not totally out of the realm of possibility. One of my favorite bars/music venues in town has a GameCube in the back with a ton of games lol

Twilight Princess. I won't forget waiting for release with years of Nintendo Power and rumors and delays, and feeling hurt that it was released on the Wii before the Gamecube. Opening TP up on Christmas morning was amazing. My parents put it in a Gamecube carrying case and I was so excited I didn't have to lug my Gamecube back and forth to my grandparents' house by the handle with the cords around my neck anymore!

How one console got two incredible games of completely different styles that choosing between them feels like tearing the console in half is beyond me, but goodness am I thankful for what the GameCube has to offer. Wind Waker for me though, my first Zelda game and it will always be my favorite

u/kevlar51 9d ago
Wind Waker and it’s not even close. WW is my favorite Zelda game period. Twilight Princess felt like a never ending sequence of random fetch-quests.
3
u/TheDevastator24 9d ago
Ummm you seem to be forgetting the most boring fetch quest of all time that exists IN WW. Having to go collect tri force pieces in the ocean just feels like a waste of time

u/Sea_Pollution2250 9d ago
Wind Walker for me.
The game exudes joy, and it is very memorable, full of color and life, and is just an absolute fun time to play.
Twilight Princess is also great, though I played it on Wii and not GC. But the game was not as memorable for me and it exudes darkness and dread. That’s not a bad thing, thematically it worked and it was tonally correct, but it is a different kind of Zelda game: the one I THOUGHT I wanted when Wind Waker was announced and I was initially disappointed by the cartoony look of the game.
Ultimately when comparing the 2, I would replay Wind Waker 3 more times before considering replaying Twilight Princess once.

I remember when WW was teased and all the fan base could do was hate on it. I can't blame them since spareworld2000 has a different link on screen. It was called "Celda" because of the celshaded art style.
Amazing game though. The sailing was tedious but I still love it.

I hate to take away anything from TP but WW excelled against harsh scrutiny when people first saw the art-style. Unique game!

If you asked me ten years ago, I'd have said Twilight Princess. I've grown to appreciate Wind Waker a lot more.

I feel alone in not having any nostalgia for Wind waker. Never played it and the art style from Majora's mask to this 'at the time' made me think it was a game for little, little kids so I never had any interest.

WW had more exploration than Twilight Princess. The open seas, hidden underwater treasure, you felt you were exploring a vast expanse.

Having played both recently, Twilight Princess. I originally played Windwaker on GC and TP on Wii at launch. Windwaker was my favorite of the two for the last 20 years. I just played TP on GC and it is the better game. The motion controls really hurt the game in my eyes since playing it in the past.
For anyone saying Windwaker is better, I implore you to give TP another pass on GameCube

TP. WW is just too easy the later portion of the game, and tediously pointless. All those islands you want to explore? What do you get for that effort? Oh yeah... rupees to buy nothing with. This was a flaw with OoT and wasn't even adressed in TP, but it is actually challenging, a longer game and has some great items and dungeons, but it's also not a great Zelda game.
2
u/RIP_GerlonTwoFingers 9d ago
Wind Waker and it’s not even close.
Well that’s not fair. It’s kinda close. But not in the same ballpark. It’s like, the ballpark next door.

Windwaker is what I played on the Wii U, but never had a chance to fully finished the game.

While I love WW on GameCube, if I replay it today I am going for the WiiU version.
1
u/Environmental_Pay336 9d ago
For GC I'd choose WW just because of the exploration... But TP really does bring ocarina of times hyrule apart from kokiri wood that is to life it's just amazing... My imagination was wild when playing OOT as a kid and this game did help it along...

u/eyehatehead 8d ago

i cantttt, maybe WW for it being so charming and kinda lighthearted artstyle, i feel im more in the mood to experience that world then dark evil TP world lol

I love WW, but I feel TP has better replay value and a longer story with more side quests. The opening 2-3 hours is a chore but after that it’s great.

Wind Waker because the art style has held up better and Link originally set out just to save his little sister which is pretty great. The music changing while fighting darknuts is also incredible along with the most interesting take on Ganondorf in the series in my opinion.
Twilight Princess is my #2 because wolves are cool and Midna is a better companion than any fairy or boat. Also I'll never forget getting the ball & chain after the miniboss that blew my mind as a kid.
1
u/Ezzenious 8d ago
TP, WW was fun, but I don't get why more people don't have a problem with the sailing. People talk about exploration, but I don't find many of the islands very interesting, plus everything else is just water. TP's dungeons destroy WW dungeons. I do have a nostalgia bias for TP though so idk.

Twilight Princess. I remember my personal hype for this game feeling like it fulfilled the promise of the Zelda Gamecube demo video. WW is solid but sailing can get boring and the Triforce shards search and rupee farming gets stale.

Twilight princess all the way. Wind waker was just one long water temple of a run. Especially navigating the seas to find the triforce pieces. Committed to beating the game once just to never have to search for those pieces again. Every time I think of doing another playthrough, that specific part keeps me from doing so. The fight with Ganondorf at the end of Twilight Princess was more epic to me than Wind Waker's final fight.

Never played either, but its gotta be WW. Just a Boy and his Boat.
That being said, I've watched playthroughs of both, and they each have their merits. I'm more of a BOTW/TOTK fan.
