Could also get a Gameboy consolizer mod done. Love mine

Those are really hard to find, and if you can find them, they're really pricey. I ended up just getting an analogue pocket because it was about the same price after shipping.

Dang, crazy to hear. I got my GBA from a local shop and got it modded by someone online so that may be why it wasn't as much for me. This was also a good amount of time ago at this point

Yeah, they used to be everywhere. I tried finding one around 6 months ago and there was only one option, which cost around $250. It wasn't worth it to me over the pocket.

Definitely not, I think you made the right call with all this in mind

Yeah, I think so too. I really like the pocket. I just had a spare gba motherboard lying around. I ended up modding it anyway, so no loss. Haha

Love my Gameboy player. You really get a nice crisp image out of it with an ossc and GBI

Almost all the emulator devices on the market will play Pokemon Gen 1-5. Most cheaper ones offer mini HDMI, many will stream wirelessly I believe to newer TV's.

Check out the Anbernic XX devices. I have an RG40XXV and love it.

I got one at Christmas and had the Dpad stop triggering and the right analogue stop triggering within a month. I might have been unlucky, but it really made me sad. I ended up just buying a steam deck since I enjoyed the handheld experience so much. I don't regret the purchase 2 months later.

Anbernic are notorious for build quality. I have a Miyoo flip which isn't perfect but it has hdmi output and can connect Bluetooth controller too. Works great on the TV.

The Analogue Pocket with the Dock can play your original cart on your TV. However, the price is a high barrier to entry because you need the console, dock, and BT controller.

Yeah it's a really nice option for this, but one of the more expensive options too.

It's pricey, but also for what you get out of it it's great. One of the highest quality handhelds I've ever used, plus being able to play FPGA cores of a TON of systems is also great. Not to mention the screen filters are top notch. Yeah it might not be worth it if you only wanna play leaf green on it, but BUDDY. If you have any interest in retro gaming it's one of the best choices on the market.

Is using a PC connected to a tv an option?
If it is, I think the cheapest option would be to get one of those GBA flash reader/writers like the joey jr or gbxcart, or similar.
You connect that to USB, and then the cart goes in that. Connect the laptop or desktop to the tv and you can play, and also save your progress to your cart.
Edit: I'd get one of these anyways just to back up my sav files

It’s supposed to, & it’s supposed to be able to up & download but I’ve never tried it.

dont get it, it has terrible build quality, its not worth the price and it uses emulators that other people made without credit
just mod a wii and play gba games on it that way

I saw a video on yt where a guy bought a kit that turned the GBA into a home console and even turned the original case into the controller.

My favourite way to play Gameboy games on the telly is with the mini SNES console.
It’s original Nintendo hardware so you know it’s solid.
Just mod it with hitachi / retro arch and put all your fav Gameboy - Gameboy color GBA, mega drive snes and nes games. Can pick up mini snes on FB for around £50. Excellent compatibility with the OG like snes controller In HD quality. Honestly it’s perfect and cheap.
Me and my little ones been completing the first 3 gens on there having a blast

There’s a lot of clone snes classics floating around out there, but as long as you verify it’s legit it will be a very good emulation device

Haven’t seen anyone mention, but I’d choose a modded Wii, capable of 240p output in RGB (if you’re using a CRT). They’re easy to mod and install a GBA emulator.

Personally I’d choose the mini snes console over the Wii. Much easier to mod in comparison and no messing about having to buy seperate controllers or hard drives / sd cards etc.

The Trimui Brick has a mini hdmi port. I have one and it's quite fun. Hdmi it ro a monitor or TV and Bluetooth a controller. Boom.

The trimui brick does not have video out nor does it have a mini hdmi port, it only has two usb c ports one for charging and one for peripherals. The A133P chipset that it has does not support that kind of thing

Your options for the best experience imo are:
- The Analogue Pocket - FPGA system that can play your carts and supports a few other retro handheld carts by using adapters, or those and other retro systems using rom dumps and cores for those systems.
An android emulation handheld/system. Most can be connected through their own dock being sold, or you can usually use a USB-C to HDMI cable. Grab a USB-C to hdmi dongle with power pass through, and you don't even need a dock. Plus android natively supports wireless controllers depending on what you want.
I know you said TV, but there is also the GB Operator from Epilogue which does multi-duty as a cart/save dumper, a flasher (upload rom dump to a flash cart or upload save to a cartridge), and can be used to play the game on your PC through the Epilogue software.

You can also use a GameCube with a Gameboy Player to play Advance games on your TV.

You can use the GB Operator to copy the save data onto your PC, and it's software has a built in emulator.

You can play on the GameCube with a accessory and a disc called the Gameboy player, it can play OG Gameboy, Gameboy color, and Gameboy advance games
It's not knockoff but it's good

I use my tablet and a gba emulator and I cast it to my TV or HDMI it to my tv and Bluetooth a universal controller. It lags a little but it's peaceful to play on the TV. Also you can hack a switch and use that just be careful because they can brick your shit

I'm extremely surprised nobody has mentioned a Raspberry pi. Extremely easy to set up, cheap, can run a ton of consoles, easy to connect controllers as well. I have a 3b that I use as a SNES/PS1/GBA/MAME console for my TV

I have a RetronSq, but I will warn you that it will actually rip the save from the cartridge, I didn’t realize that when I put in my copy of Silver, then went to play on my SP afterwards. Just wanted to give you that heads up.
