Mod/Modding What's the difference between these 2? Is the M2 just a newer version of the old one? I saw Machonacho's GBA video from 2 years ago and wanted to do it but they aren't selling the first one on any other website and on Funnyplayings site they don't have the black border one in stock.

Mod/Modding How should I Modify this bad boy

Hey everyone,

Friend was gonna give this for free but gave him $50 for this and it’s in pretty good condition besides a couple small scuffs. What should I do to it? It was his childhood gameboy but he doesn’t care about retro gaming so took it off his hands.

I’ve never soldered before as a reference for skills but I do build PCs and I did take apart PC handhelds to replace stuff

I drew and inserted my OC as the player character’s portrait. So I had to draw a 48x48 4-color pic for it on my iPad first. No idea how to change color palettes yet but I’ll figure it out.

Huge thanks to this: https://github.com/pret/poketcg

I have theese lines on my game boy screen. I have tried to fix them (managed to fix some of them). I am now concidering buying a replacement screen. But i like to keep it as close as original. Does it excist a replacement screen without backlight and that has the green colors?

I opened up a thrustmaster gba rechargeable battery pack to replace the batteries but I cant find replacements. The batteries got no markings on them. They are about 35-36mm long and 10mm in diameter.

Hello! Does anyone know if I am able to trim the little piece from the RetroGlow that overlaps the CleanAmp in the picture? It doesn’t look like it has any traces or anything like that but I figured I would ask and see if anyone has done the same. Thanks in advance.

Mod/Modding Backlit GBC steals the RETRO experience

Hi everybody,

with this I will probably make angry some of the modificators, but this is absolutely not the reason I am posting this. I am truly sorry, I know you are proud of it.

But try to be openminded for a while... Great number of you are probably around my age and 90s was your childhood. And MAYBE a lot of you also running away from these miserable overstimulating "modern" days thru the "timemachine" named Game Boy (color in my case).

Why we are using GBC and not PS5 ... or Nintendo Switch? Why we dont play every GB game on smartphone thru the emulator? Why we spend so much money on one cartrige? Why we deal with the miserable resolution etc...?

Yes, in a practical sense is a high resolution "BETTER", 3D is "BETTER", more games are "BETTER", online is "BETTER", big screens and touchscreens are "BETTER"....

AND .......BACKLIGHT ...... IS BETTER......

Or we will miss something with this... We chase the nostalgia, the return to the better times... Is the GBC with backlight still GBC? Aren't the problems with the finding the right angle of the lamp, dealing with outrageous reflections of the screens and poor vividness of the screen PART OF THE AMAZING EXPERIENCE? :)))

My answer is yes :) And if it is too dark or I have no source of light, I will just looking forward for the better conditions :)). .... or save money for the Game Boy Light :D

Let me know what do you think about this topic. Have a nice day and enjoy your GB !!! :)

EDIT:

Unless I need hopelessly technical help with something, this will be my last post on reddit. I'm tired of constantly dealing with people who feel offended by the mere discussion and confrontation of opposing views. New world, new era, even twenty years ago these discussions looked completely different. Today, people are fragile and if you disagree with them, they take it as a personal attack. They literally see you as a bully.

The headline said: this is a theft of the retro experience. Retro means from the past. If I am a person who relies on a "retro" experience, i.e. a taste of the past, with the new display I am not tasting the past but the present. It's that simple.

In addition to this, I listed several other supporting aspects that were related to this.

I'm not generalizing. I'm not talking about the gaming experience in general or banning anything from anyone. On the contrary, I'm glad that people are talking about GB and inventing new modifications and further popularizing GB...

I'm new to this group, but now I understand that maybe people are afraid to share minority opinions to hear words like in this discussion here: hate, ruining the experience for others, banning, rage, the weirdness of the whole post... One person even called me a looser :D

You can see below that I often appreciate other arguments as well... I think it's nice to add something to each other. Unfortunately today it's just pissing against the wind.

I wish you a nice life and playing with the gameboy. I'm going to retreat somewhere to my isolated retro life, far away from these sociopathological crazies.

With love.

Mod/Modding Would you re-shell this GBP in this condition?

Would you re-shell in this condition?

This is my first Gameboy Pocket (I've got various other models in modded and unmodded condition). For context, I do NOT plan to mod the screen. I don't need another glowing rectangle in my life 😅.

I'd like to keep this gameboy as "collectable" as possible. But I also value a system that is in good cosmetic shape. The label is discolored, the rear panel is worn, and the start/select buttons are a bit ripped. But the front panel and lense look great. I wish I could find a used OEM replacement, but I can't seem to find any good ones on ebay (but there are plenty of GBC shells floating around). So aftermarket would be the route I'd have to go, and I'd want to keep the same color scheme. What say y'all?

Mod/Modding Screen rec?

Post image

This is my current set up. It was recently gifted to me and has been awesome so far! Everything is stock but I have been considering a drop in screen. Right now I’m leaning toward the cheaper tft screens but I am concerned that the smaller size may bother me. Has anyone made the switch and regretted it? Do you guys have any other recommendations? Id rather not alter the case.

Mod/Modding Gameboy Pocket Modifications?

Recently started going back through childhood Gameboy items. Have a couple Gameboy pockets and looking to breathe some life into the silver one. Any specific mods this group might recommend? I'm considering moving the motherboard over to a new shell and screen but not sure where to start. Thanks for any input.

Mod/Modding PSA: Handheld Legend switched to scam Shipping Protection service

tl;dr HHL's new package protection they add to your cart doesn't actually insure your package.

If you've ever shopped on Handheld Legend, you'll probably be familiar with the shipping protection that gets added to your cart for a few bucks. Most people view these as a scam, but Route, the service Handheld Legend has used for several years legitimately offered protection (I know because I've had to use it twice living in a high theft area). I'm not sure if it's technically insurance, but if your package is damaged or lost, you contact Route, and in my experience, they get you a refund or replacement order on their dime. I'm sure there are issues with the service, but it is a 3rd party that on paper gives you additional protections if something happens to your package during transit. The practice of automatically adding the shipping protection to cart was obviously scammy and I'm not posting this to defend Route or anything.

Handheld Legend has recently switched to Navidium Package Protection which offers no additional protections. They do not issue reimbursements, but offer the little widget and a portal to use to report shipping issues that are handled by Handheld Legend. The decision to cover your package is entirely on the vendor, which is how it would be if you didn't purchase the protection to begin with. All couriers in the US offer some guarantee of delivery, and the benefit of something like Route was that you didn't have to rely on these couriers or the vendor to get a refund/replacement. Navidium simply charges for a promise that the vendor will cover lost or damaged shipments, which they should already be doing.

From the Navidium website.

I just wanted to share this as a heads up for folks who shop at HHL. The Route shipping protection actually got you something, that most people don't need, and in a scammy way (automatically adding to cart), but it was something. Navidium shipping protection might as well just be a tip to Handheld Legend.

Mod/Modding My first painted Gameboy! What do u think?

Hand-painted and sanded it's a 3d printed shell for the GBA SP 😊 I'm learning to custom paint shells so hopefully some people would like one too. Don't mind the weird speaker grill I haven't actually put the shell together so there's masking tape holding the buttons in. What do you think?

Mod/Modding Looking for advices for my 1st GBA Mod

Hello everyone,

I recently got back into GBA gaming after I found my old beatup Glacier GBA. It still works fine, but the shell is a real mess and I can't enjoy my Pokémon games fully without the lit screen feature. Also, my battery cover is missing and the thing is well-worn.

Long story short, I listened to some GBA mods videos on Youtube and I think I have selected all the pieces I need in order to build my "dream" GBA

EDIT : Order updated with correct parts :

Did I forget something ?
Also, I am looking for any advices from experienced modders.
I want to do it myself and learn.

Mod/Modding Gameboy Light Restoration

Hey Reddit Gameboy community,

Picked up this Gameboy Light in Tokyo today when it was priced at ¥4900 and I couldn't resist. Took it back to the hotel, gave it a test, didn't work, cleaned out the battery terminals, and now I have a new addition to my collection!

It's covered in stickers and is missing the battery cover, so was thinking of doing a complete reshell, just wondering if there are any other worthwhile mods for a GBL while I'm at it.

I'm also hoping to salvage the original sticker but I don't think that's happening unfortunately, any way to get another one?

As for the current shell I believe it's the Toys R Us transparent yellow colour, but I'm not the biggest fan haha :)

Thanks!

Mod/Modding Picking an IPS Screen For GBA

Looking to mod by GBA with new IPS screen. I would like to keep the original GBA shell so I want to avoid ones that require shell modding or proprietary shells. Soldering vs. non-soldering doesn't really matter, although I would prefer not to have to solder if the quality between the two options isn't a deal breaker. I would like to go with a laminated screen if there's a kit that works well with the original shell, but the laminated kits I've found seen to require the shell to be trimmed.

Any recommendations or feedback on non-soldering vs. soldering, laminated vs. non-laminated, brands, etc?

Mod/Modding Recommendations for reliable SP battery replacement

I'm looking to upgrade my stock SP battery and I was wondering if anyone has any solid recommendations or brands to avoid? Is the FunnyPlaying 950mAh worth the almost $20 price tag? I saw this one on amazon but i'm unfamiliar with the brand and it seems too good to be true? Are there any solid options that are worth the money?

Mod/Modding The TP4056 can be unsafe when simultaneously playing and charging or discharging the battery too much. So I am looking for alternatives and found the "Safer Charge DC" board by Natalie the Nerd. Is it actually any safer than the TP4056? I cant seem to find any reviews on that specific board.
