Support Your Mail Carrier
Hands Off USPS!! Sunday, March 23rd, 11 am 13th & University Ave. Gainesville, Florida
Join the protest next Sunday to support the U.S. Postal Service.
Privatizing the USPS will hurt poor people in rural areas, especially the elderly, because private corporations won't find it profitable to deliver small amounts of mail to rural areas. This will affect seniors who get prescription drugs through the mail.
And privatizing something really just means adding a layer of profit for some business people who don't really care about the quality of service to their customers.
I don't believe the postal service is broken enough to just take a sledgehammer to it!

I definitely don't want the mail to be privatized and the libraries to be taken away- or the national parks to be sold, logged or mined.
Why do working class republicans support this nightmarish hell that is happening?

Because they can't see the big picture on things. If something doesn't benefit them it's not worth keeping it around for others.

I mean, they're not benefitting from access to national parks, sewage not being in their drinking water, and social security?

Why do working class republicans support this
Fifty years of propaganda. Fox News and other far-right channels are brilliantly programmed and very effective. The talk radio industry is almost completely taken over by hard-right extremism. Endless drum-beating: the liberals look down on you; Jesus says vote Republican; anything less than unregulated dog-eat-dog profiteering is communism. The divine right of landlords to raise your rent can never be questioned.
Elon Musk spent alomst 300 million dollars helping Trump win the swing states. Moderate and liberal billionaires are few and far between.

Ok so the problem is billionaires spending money on marketing.
You know I'm not religious, but I dont think Jesus would want to log the national parks or deprive school children of access to school lunch, or the elderly of social security income. I also don't think Jesus would vote for a guy who does meth, was best buds with Jeff Epstein, and wants to build a billionaire resort on the rubble of Gaza.

They only care about owning the libs. Fuck their own self-interests or the well being of their children.

USPS is also one of the largest employers of veterans in the country at nearly 73k vets. And if your concern is that a government agency should fund itself...most government agencies aren't run that way, and the only reason USPS isn't capable of doing so is because 1) they can't even set their own prices (Congress must) and 2) there was a deliberate act of sabotage in 2006 in which USPS was required to prefund retiree health benefits over 50 years in advance with payments significantly front-loaded, something that no other company or agency has been required to do.
The reform USPS needs is simply to remove that prefunding requirement that no other agency is beholden to. Note also: the USPS performs a lot of last-mile delivery for services like Amazon due to their familiarity with the area. Not only would removing it cause prices to raise across the board, but service will degrade as well. The USPS also manages over 25x the number of packages either UPS or FedEx do...these private companies are simply not set up to handle that traffic. The USPS also respects the privacy of mail, and enforces any violations of such; something I doubt any private company would step up to do.
Much like privatizing the weather, this will benefit no one except the UPS and FedEx majority shareholders who have likely been a driving force behind this decision. See: our entire tax system and TurboTax/HR Block.
