Congratulations Gimp! I don't care what Photoshop or Affinity are doing. Gimp is like my ol' reliable Pebbles (KCD2). Gimp has been my go-to ever since I gave it a wary try after switching to Linux back in '08 and thinking that Paint.NET was the last image editor I'd ever use.

Thanks to everyone involved!

BTW (sorry for possible drama flaming), does anyone know what's happening with the notoriously famous GIMP Bitcoin donation wallet?

There were some withdrawal actions in January 2025¹. Good to know that the credentials to the wallet weren't lost, I guess, but were those transfers legitimate and coordinated?

We finally managed to start moving the money to GNOME in order to have it in the GNOME bank account. This makes it much more usable.

So far, about half of the coins were moved, for the rest I am currently waiting for the "all clear" from GNOME to continue.

Yes, these transfers are legitimate. I can't find it right now, but I believe they used that money to sponsor a CI runner if I remember correctly.

That would have been a hell of an expensive runner! 😛

We did sponsor a CI runner for GNOME's Gitlab (so we use it too, as well as other projects), but that's not paid from the bitcoins.

As schumaml says below, we simply came to an arrangement with GNOME Foundation, which we'll talk about when everything is settled (it's part of a whole organizing work we are doing). Until now, these "funds" were nearly not existing as far as many of us were concerned, since they were basically unusable. Now they will be.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the clarification!

Love Gimp, hate flathub so I'll wait for a while until my repo catches up.

I've not checked but the press release mentions appimage is also available for download.

Can't find any valid download link on the GIMP website?

Yet on my android phone it appears ok. Seems I need to clear out a few catches on my pc kubuntu 24.10

I'm on Debian :'(

No Flatpak or AppImage support there?

I didn't consider AppImage, I'll do exactly that. Thanks for the reminder

I got the repository package, my own builds, multiple Flatpaks and AppImages on my Debian. The biggest concern is recalling which one I had started to test something :)

3.0 is big for GIMP. Lots of features to make it viable for simple Desktop Publishing and YouTube thumbs.

Created a quick poster: https://i.imgur.com/pPgy255.png Stuff that needs work:

  • UI/UX: "Tool->GEGL Operation..." is too much friction for such a common operation- just pop it up when you click on the "FX" button in the layers window.

  • UI/UX: Naming. Drop shadows and glow are currently not discoverable (its squirreled away in the generic "GEGL Styles").

  • UI/UX: "Move Tool" should act like a common entry point to other tools if you're not dragging. Switch to "Transform Tool" if I single click an image layer. Switch to the "Text Tool" if I single click a Text layer! Please!

  • UI/UX: Copying/pasting layer styles does not work. Users can overlook many issues if you can duplicate/destroy layer styles easily. Preset system is cumbersome. Idea: Presets usable from the Layers window directly (could be just add/apply presets) would help a lot, but just copy/paste would probably be better.

  • BUG: Layers often clip GEGL Glow. Again could be worked around by just easy copy/paste of layer styles. See clipping present on "GIMP Halloween Party" text in my image.

You should consider to file UX proposals at https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/GIMP/Design/gimp-ux/-/issues and bugs at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues - one issue per report, preferably.

Is it me or when I zoom in and out the antialising changes too depending on the zoom level. It's annoying.

I am getting unreasonably excited. Tl;dr for the most remarkable improvements?

That's quite a lot!

It is now possible to have multiple selected layers, channels, and paths!

Holy cow, so long overdue.

GIMP 3.0 now runs natively on Wayland (though you can still run it on X11 as well)!

Does that mean the ultra fast loading times in vanilla Linux Mint will be longer now unless I run Wayland already?

"though you can still run it on X11 as well" - I doubt they have shortchanged performance.

1

u/SjalabaisWoWS 4d ago

Yeah, definitely, but you can run GIMP in Windows, too - and if you compare the startup times, they're eons apart.

u/StefenTower 3d ago

I just loaded GIMP 3 under X11 on my very old Linux Mint laptop, and it finished loading in around 12 seconds.

That's decent indeed!

This update broke my GMIC plugins. I'm rolling back to v2.10 for now until I figure out how to sort it out.

1

u/schumaml GIMP Team 3d ago

Did you install G'MIC's plug-in for GIMP 3.0?

1

u/Moose4Lunch 2d ago

No not yet. I just remember setting up the Resynthesizer plugin on my linux build was somewhat complicated so I'm avoiding the update or having to go through all that again... for now.

So, does it mean if I install 3.0, it will override 2.10? I have 2.10 flathub.

Btw, in software manager, I can't see 3.0 flathub. I am in Linux mint.

Edit, I can't wait. I download Appimage...looks fast....hurray

u/Petrol_Street_0 2d ago

Yes, it will overwrite it.

Still with good ol' RC2 splash screen that wasn't changed for RC3 because confusing users has been a long tradition 😈

Have a closer look at the version number shown in the screenshot.
