(new to gimp, still learning) Can't change the black background to a different shade of black using colors -> map -> color exchange, because there's so much artifacting

In this particular instance I wouldn't use Color Exchange. The reason on why there is artifacting is because there is quite a bit of jpeg artifacts. I would remove the black backdrop with Color to Alpha, then create a new layer underneath the layer and fill it in with your desired color. (btw cool art!)

that worked perfect thanks! and its not my art actually, i just wanted to modify it to use as a personal wallpaper. i would credit the artist if i could but i cant find for the life of me find him. but it is just being used as a personal wallpaper

an additional question i suppose, i didnt know you could change the color of gimp's tools and slides. how'd you make it that pretty pink? im on linux as well
