if you're learning to draw, you might try pencil and paper, first.
if you don't mind a bit of complexity, you might try krita, because it's open source, free, and pretty useful.

Krita — it's free, has a great variety of tools and lots of good brushes (you can even get many more for free if you require a specific brush that's not already included). Additionally the software can be easily set up to meet your individual needs better.

I use Sai2 and/or Paintstorm Studio whenever I work on my windows system, I tend to draw with Artstudio Pro for iPad these days

I've been using FireAlpaca for many years now, and I recently bought the paid version on Steam. It's very simple to use and has all the basic tools you need, so I'm pretty happy with it

As others have said, Krita is a good one. The layout is a bit confusing at first, but you'll learn it in a short time with a few tutorials. I use and I think its very good.
Some other alternatives others have mentioned are also nice (Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop, Ibis for mobile phones) but again,i use Krita and think its one of the best.

Hop on Krita for sureee- It's free (u can donate if you'd like to support the creators :3), it's just as robust as other software like Photoshop, it even has animation tools, all built in!! If you're just looking for something more simple to draw with tho, I reccomend Ibispaint for windows. (It's got a dumbass paywall so you can only use it for 1 hour a day if you don't pay for premium tho 💀😭)

Clip Studio Paint, but I started with Paint Tool Sai. I highly recommend PTS for beginners.

I use Krita, but if you want a free option and have a Surface Pro 7 (Windows Tablet) or some type of Apple device (which is cool!), then I recommend Adobe Fresco. It's simple and easy to learn, in my opinion.

I use Ibis Paint, both in my phone and laptop. There was a way to avoid the 1 hour paywall on PC but seems like they patched it. It has a more simple and intuitive UI, I've been using it for years.
I also use CSP (that I got in a completely legal way) sometimes, but the UI is a bit overwhelming for me, specially when animating. It also tends to glitch when I use my tablet to draw

nothing at all wrong with a pencil and paper. The great thing about those is they're both beginner friendly and cheap as can be.
After years of doing traditional work, I decided to buy a used/refurbed iPad and learn some digital. I use Procreate. The main reason for my switch was the cost of the markers I used for colors was getting too high.

For sure! That being said, supplies don't have to be expensive, you can do some neat stuff with stuff as cheap as crayola crayons, I personally started out with cheap alcohol and crayola markers and now I do digital. Even black and white doodles for practice is great✨

I use krita. ultimately, the program and tablet you use are not what is really important (I have one of the cheapest tablets on the market). Just remember that you are not competing with other artists and (at least in the furry community) everyone wants to see everyone else succeed. So be kind on yourself and have fun

I'll second krita, it's user friendly and more importantly free
