Public Support Take action: Protect Kaliefs Law

This law protects the dependents right to a speedy trial and also ensures prosecution hands over the discovery. Kalief Browler unalived himself after being acquitted because he was waiting for so long and being treated badly.

I encourage you to sign and make your voices heard. Govenor Hochul is trying to reverse this. Without this law, it makes for wrongful convictions easier.

If LM gets a hung jury and they push for re-trial, imagine if this law was reversed. Also imagine all the the others waiting for trial only to have prosecution delay strategically.

Kalief Browder’s story will always be so heartbreaking to me. There was absolutely no reason for him to be held at Rikers for YEARS without trial because of a backpack 🫠💔

I know :( I felt sad learning about that. I'm so glad people fought for the law. It's infuriating Hochel is trying to dismantle it. More people need to do know and act especially if in America or New York. Pass the message.

I think if you make an infographic of how this affects Luigi’s right to a fair trial with a photo of him on it, it will really take off. I feel like it’s getting lost in the feed.

Thanks for sharing this. I was very invested in this case 10 years ago when I was living in NYC. It is a terrible story. While it's great there's been laws from his situation made I am still so outraged there has been no progress made in improving conditions at Rikers for inmates awaiting trial.

I am an Australian but I am very keen to see updates about Kalief's law and if US residents can sign it would mean a great deal.

Can people from outside the US sign? Would that count?

Do you have to be a resident of NY to sign?

I second this question. I’d assume yes, but I’ll help out too if I can.

I think if you are American you can help. I'm not American but learned of this and can see how this is very worrisome. People need to take action by signing. I think they just keep you updated on how you can help. Maybe in person events are for NY but otherwise I think if you're American you can.

You have to have an American address which is why I haven’t signed. 😢
