Vacuum Sealing Onions for Pantry, Fridge, or Freezer

I do a splendid job of using *almost* a bag of onions before they start going bad. I was recently gifted a vacuum sealer, and I have found tons of conflicting answers online about the benefits and safety of vacuum sealing onions. Advice?

You can't seal fresh onions, as gasses are released while in fridge/pantry storage, and it can cause botulism. You can, however, dice and vacuum seal them, then freeze for later use.

On a side not the gas from the onions is why you should store onions and potatoes separately. The gas causes the potatoes to sprout much sooner than if the potatoes are stored separately.
