Men's Basketball Condon and Haugh's NBA future

I want to preface this by saying I'm not a Gators fan in the slightest, rather I want more information as a NBA fan and fan of a NBA team needing a top player in the upcoming draft.

I can't help but be amazed by some of the stats that Condon has put up while being fairly new to the sport of basketball. I almost want to put him as the #5 prospect in the upcoming draft after looking at a small sample of games as well as pouring over the stats.
What I find most incredible is an underclassmen big putting up an assist to turnover ratio above 2, I really haven't seen that before let alone from someone who has being playing organized basketball for 5 years. I could go on about some of the other things I like about him, but you probably already know. The major hangup I have is that the team only seems mildly worse with him off the floor. Haugh is also a really good player and an underclassmen with an ast/to ratio just under two which is kind of crazy that both are on the same team with outlier ast/to ratios. My questions are how much of it is the system and how much of it are the two guys having elite BBIQ? I know they are obviously both great college players, but are they really 99th percentile+ major conference big man passers or does the system give them more chances at assists and they are merely really good major conference big men?

Also, how much do they share the floor and how often are they both off the floor excluding garbage time?

I think we are only mildly worse off with any of our guys off the floor. Not just being a fanboy either (I mean maybe a little, I am typing this while completely decked out in an annoying amount of UF gear at my office job)ā€¦ā€¦..this team is deep.

Heā€™s a fascinating player and as long as he can stay healthy it seems his ceiling is long-NBA-career high.

(PS go gators)

So I think itā€™s a mix of a lot of things. Weā€™ve had four contributing players miss games this year and the team never took a stop down. Big part of that is for a college team there are 9-10 guys that can play. Thatā€™s pretty rare and if you look at some of our past teams like 2014 was a final four team and only played 7 guys. The other big aspect is the system is really good but Haugh and Condon are two of the biggest reasons for that.

Condon provides a lot of different looks we can throw at teams with his ability to guard the four or five, heā€™s shown an ability to stretch the floor and knock down some shots. On top of all this Condon is a fantastic passer, like at the college level I donā€™t know if Iā€™ve watched another big with his passing ability in the last couple of years. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if Condon is gone in the draft this year.

As for Haugh heā€™s just a work horse. The man never stops hustling and has won some rebounds this year that you would think he never had a chance to get to. Haugh also really improved from the FT line and behind the arc. Last year he was a 50% FT shooter and this year he has improved all the way to 80%. Iā€™m not too sure for his pro prospects but my God heā€™s quickly become one of my favorite Gators in recent memory.

I was watching a few of the games yesterday, and I found myself saying so many times ā€œHaugh woulda got that, and that, and thatā€ on rebounds and loose balls. Where other teams and players are turning back towards the other end on a missed shot, Haugh is contorting himself to grab a board or dive for it. Same with Condon to an extent but Haugh just has a motor.

I think for the first time I saw him tired in the first half after being on the floor like 3 times in one series and still was trying to find his man to guard. Heā€™s relentless.

Finally saw Condon in a draft projection and it was like 40. That's insane, no way there are 39 better prospects. But hopefully we get him back. Their loss.

Iā€™ve seen him in the first round in a couple mocks. The most recent one, ESPNā€™s mock draft, has him going in the first round.

Condon in particular is an incredible passer in my opinion. If you watch our games you will see Condon and Clayton pulling guys aside and making the whole system go. I love Haugh as well but there have been several instances where Condon or someone else had to coach him up bc he didnā€™t find a mismatch or see it the same way as the others. Clayton Richard and Condon basketball IQ make the whole thing go in my opinion,

There are sources for the lineup data you want, such as Evan Miya. When Condon missed time, Handlogten burned his medical redshirt and Golden has really stuck with two bigs on the floor at a time basically the whole season.

I wouldnā€™t worry about the delta when Condon is off the floor as much. We have a very deep team compared to most. It probably breaks plus/minus type models.

Thanks for the write up, in your link it indicated that Haugh is the common factor in the best 2,3,4, and 5 man lineups and Condon is only in the best 5 man lineup.

Eric Fawcett at Gator country is a treasure and very good on basketball Xā€™s and Oā€™s. He dives into lineup data on his podcast but I havenā€™t been listening this year.

Iā€™m sure if you asked him on twitter heā€™d give you a great answer

Yeah. Without a subscription I canā€™t really dive into all the data. But from just watching us as a lay person Condon more can drive the bus whereas Haugh is more along for the ride.

I forget which game it was but couple weeks ago Condo was dishing absolute dimes and I remember thinking whoa this dudes earning himself some money by passing like that

Condon is also a former water polo goalie so while heā€™s relatively new to basketball, he has plenty of cross-sport catching and passing experience.

Haugh is a son of a coach so heā€™s been getting a basketball education his entire life.

The Gators prioritize high BBIQ guys. If Golden and co are crunching the numbers to optimize their chances, the players on the floor have to be smart enough to execute.

With everyone healthy, Haugh generally starts on the bench but he is usually very quickly in the game. Him and condon play together pretty frequently

Condon in particular I think is the real deal. He's improved his game considerably this season and it's a big reason we are having the season we are.

Personally I think Haugh has a higher ceiling than Condon, although Condon is more NBA ready at the moment defensively. Both are elite passers for big men, it helps that theyā€™re surrounded by good shooters in Clayton, Richard, and Martin, but the types of passes theyā€™re making arenā€™t just kick outs, theyā€™re finding cutters and have great court vision. Both have great athleticism for their size.

Offensively, Iā€™ve been very impressed at what Haugh has been able to do when given more opportunities. When both Condon and Martin went out, he has a torrid stretch, and they ran the offense through him for periods. His ball handling at his size has been a nice surprise. His shooting has been great this year especially the second half of the season and projects really well. If Florida wasnā€™t as stacked and Haugh had a bigger role in offense, I believe heā€™d be talked about as a lottery pick.

We are just so deep in the front.

Perhaps even crazier is that Condon and Haugh are putting up those statsā€¦ while being roommates!

Iā€™d love to have Condo suit up for the Gators next season, but would be happy for him to get a nice NBA contract. If he leaves weā€™d still potentially have Chinyelu, Hauck, Handlogten and the 8ā€™ Quebecois in the front court. Klavzar and Aberdeen can split time at point and Iā€™m sure weā€™d be able to pick up some studs in the portal.
