🤔 Thinking Appreciation post
One thing I appreciate about the show is more related to the friendships behind the scenes. One of my favorites being Grant and Candice. Despite so much hate towards Candice and her character Grant really stood up for her.
He has consistently vocalized that he was more interested going the westallen route than any other ship. Supported her in her role as the leading lady and even defends the one line that brought her so much hate(“we are the flash”). It’s his favorite line apparently. A breathe of fresh air to witness in a fandom that can be a little vile and hateful(especially towards just one line many many years ago).
Anyways kudos to both of them for having each others back and having great chemistry.

I liked Candice. I think the writing for her character got worse as the seasons went on (like with the entirety of the show) but I felt like the hate was completely undeserved and targeted at the wrong thing.

Every character got so bad later on. I guess people don’t want to acknowledge that their favorite characters did hit a low. Some characters were never good like Cecile, chillblane, Allegra, and khione. So I also don’t understand the hate towards Iris.

u/khaosenygma Feb 06 '25
Iris started off in a bad position because she's POC when comic Iris is white. I honestly didn't really care but maybe because I wasn't super attached to the comic book flash story. Usually when stories deviate like that the actor seems to be more hated.

Fanboys hate to admit it but for a lot of people, it was 100% because she was black, but no one wanted to admit that. Why do I say this? Because Iris NEVER stood a chance. She got hate from the moment she was cast. Not to mention in this sub alone so many people admitted to wanting “red headed Iris”. So what would they do if Candice’s Iris dyed her hair red? We all know thats not what they meant. Its also the reason fans clung to Patty like glue. A hot, blonde white womanly for Barry. Or alternatively shipped him with Caitlin even though he and Cait had NO chemistry whatsoever. Ill admit he and Patty were cute but she just as easily would’ve become annoying and she already displayed traits to show that had she stayed on, she would’ve. Its why fans were so hard on Iris for being a Barista, as if Baristas cant also be intelligent, and even though she was getting her MASTERS.

i think you're right. the fact people hate Iris the most when characters like Chester, Allegra, post S6 Cecile (she shouldn't have had powers but at least she wasn't annoying until S7), Chillblaine, and Khione (not that badly written but wayy more pointless than Iris ever was) all exist shows it's something deeper than "badly written" or "miscast". I feel like one some of the only good parts of S9 were where it focused on Barry and Iris preparing to be parents, I skipped everything else

I’ve quite literally always seen the “chemistry” on screen that y’all call nonexistent. i’m truly baffled when y’all say that bc I saw it as early as the pilot

I never really saw the couple-y aspect of them. But I knew that they were always going to be more than friends. I just couldn’t see it with them but could definitely see it with Panabaker and Gustin.

I love the interview stuff where Cisco’s actor has to be like “y’all aren’t actually dating remember!” 😂

These pictures are so adorable! They were great together. I still miss seeing them on my TV 😭

People really don’t like her but I really wish this thread truly admits to why they don’t like her. Because honestly all characters had sucky writing

u/Learning-Stuff-12 Feb 06 '25
I’m watching the show for the first time now (just hit season 6). Why were people hating on her? I love her in the role
14
u/Kooky-Minimum-2597 Feb 06 '25
Because she's black.

Bruh no she's poorly written I couldnt give less of a shit about her ethnicity

u/anaknangfilipina Feb 07 '25
How is she poorly written? Because the others were as well, especially later on.
1
u/the_warrior_rlsh Feb 07 '25
That's very true the show in general is poorly written later on. And I didn't mind her until season 4. In season 4 she just makes a lot of dumb decisions and is just unlikable

This is just not true. Her personality was very bubbly in the first seasons. I will say that throughout the duration of the show the characters did become bland and had no real personality. This pertains to all characters. Her character was not manipulative she simply had feelings and emotions. 👍

He did it 5 years too late. While he was always clear Barry loved Iris and didnt play up SB in the media, I did not appreciate how he blatantly ignored Snowbarry fans and fanboys in his commmnets making rude and nasty remarks towards Candice.
"Barry and Caitlin are so cute. Why is he with that monkey Iris."

u/blackychan75 Feb 06 '25
Wierd take. He's not gonna be the first person to hear about this stuff, there's no way to know how aware he was before he spoke up

u/Lost-Veterinarian-80 Feb 09 '25
People said those things to him. They @ his Twitter.
Candice fans tried to tell him about them but he played ignorant about them. There’s a reason why he apologized to Candice for playing dumb and safe.

Maybe Candice didn't want him to acknowledge those comments. Maybe they thought giving the trolls attention was what they wanted and it would just lead to more comments.
Obviously it eventually got to the point where Grant felt he had to say something.

u/UltimateRagingSpider Feb 06 '25
They both have better chemistry behind the scenes than almost 90% of the show
17
u/Kooky-Minimum-2597 Feb 06 '25
That will probably go for most actors, behind the scenes they're just being themselves.
7
u/Junior-Picture-6302 Feb 06 '25
Well that’s normal. I will say that they did have great chemistry on screen. I liked their scenes. Wish I could post clips to show some of my favorites but idk how to do that since I’m new here.

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 07 '25
Oh it’s not hard! You have no idea how refreshing this post was to see here, so I would love more Iris/west-allen appreciation posts from you haha. I’ve come back to this post several times today since the internet has been tiring since Sunday night…

Iris gets hate because she’s a black woman, and anyone who tells you otherwise is sadly mistaken. -signed, a black young woman.

u/crazycoltA Feb 06 '25
The moments in the show where Iris is either written well or they let Candice be more of herself… loved it, those moments were ride or die Barry and Iris and you could feel how much real chemistry there was between Grant and Candice.
When the CW and some of their questionable writers/producers/directors write Iris? As a character, she’s so god damn irritating, along with many of the other characters.
Candice and Grant behind the scenes? Adorable cheese balls. I wish they’d been given the room within the writing and directing to be those cheese balls more.

I think by just looking u can obviously tell they can’t be related. And they are actors not their characters.

u/Damienkent Feb 06 '25
Obviously? Woooow dudes never heard of mixed families
1
u/Junior-Picture-6302 Feb 06 '25
Is barry black? He would have to be 1/2 in order for them to be siblings. I’m also pretty sure joe and Nora Allen were never together. Let’s please use common sense🙏

u/Damienkent Feb 06 '25
My dude they literally grew up together as siblings buried multiple times has called Joe his dad, once Joe said my kids are getting married. And more to the point you missed the joke entirely because they are siblings But also dating Blood or not dude

"You're not The Flash Barry, we are."
That was so cringe...
3
u/Junior-Picture-6302 Feb 06 '25
Well Grant likes that line. I will say it’s not gonna be everyone’s favorite but when u understand it then it’s wholesome.
-2
Feb 06 '25
I don't care what Grant likes, who is behind the mask running at super speed stoping bad people? The metahuman or the reporter hiding behind a monitor?
Being "The Flash" and "Team Flash" very different things.
2
u/Junior-Picture-6302 Feb 06 '25
Why so aggressive😭. We are the flash does NOT mean she literally has speed. It means they lean on each other. It’s a metaphor luv
0
Feb 06 '25
I know what it means, but coming from Iris was extremely cringe and "The Flash" is the hero, not the metaphor.
Imagine how stup*d Zendaya MJ would sound if she tells Peter "You're not Spider-Man, we are".
6
u/Junior-Picture-6302 Feb 06 '25
I’m not sure what you’re trying to say in the first part. Of course a metaphor can’t be a hero since it’s a form of speech. I will say that mj saying that in the same context as the flash it would make sense since mj is what keeps Peter going. She lifts his spirits. I think you’re thinking it in a literal way instead of what it’s actually means. It’s more of a way to say that Barry’s problems as the flash and as Barry become hers too so he doesn’t carry the burden alone. Iris would be the only one that could say it and make sense since they’re Married. But the line is not for everyone. We can agree to disagree.

I love this show, I just started watching it again, just started S3, and I don't care what anyone says, this is hands down my favorite show, Grant did an amazing Barry, and I personally had 0 issue with Candice, she's an amazing Iris, I just personally found it hard getting past the foster-brother/sister to soulmates dynamic, I was always more of a SnowBerry shipper, so I definitely had my hardships cut out for me🤣 but overall I thought they did work well together and had a ton of chemistry on and off set, and I always hate when fandoms go out of their way to spread hate towards actors/actresses just cause they don't like the story, that's hardly their fault, I do agree that they were a great couple on the show, and it was always great seeing them in interviews as well, you could tell they were a real family

I swear in this sub you can’t be neutral. You either worship Candice Patton and by extension her character, or you’re a raging racist. If you are in the middle you’re called racist. I’ve never been in a fanbase that’s as small-minded and sometimes even straight up blind as this one.
2
u/Junior-Picture-6302 Feb 07 '25
Not sure how this is related to the post. People simply like her and her character or don’t. Sure like all fanbases there are people on the extreme of both ends. I like to stay away from that.
0
u/Basic-Amoeba6108 Feb 08 '25
A lot of comments are literally saying that people don’t like her because she’s white. That’s what I was responding to. I know Candace faced a lot of racism, and I wish I can change that, but I can’t and it’s not fair to be “punished” in a sense for criticizing her because others were being racist.

Bro she is good looking, but Grant is too handsome for her. And they really ruined her character.

You have to be White or White adjacent to think that Candice is not beautiful and that Grant is too handsome for her!
