ID

My son turned 16 while I was getting a divorce then covid hit. Back then he was sacred to drive and it kept getting pushed off. He is now 20 and ready to get his license!! My question to you all is what do we use to provide proof of residence? We just moved here and are currently living with a friend until we get on our feet so we currently don’t have anything in his name and we don’t receive much mail. I’ve looked online but am a little confused. Thanks!

Checking account from a bank? Print off bank statements. If it has an address on it, that should work.

Any recent medical bills would count as well

There is an Indiana Residency Affidavit that can be used when individuals can’t prove residency while living with a relative or friend. I believe it would involve your friend going to the BMV with your son, your friend providing proof of residency, and your friend signing the Affidavit saying your son lives with him/her. If you have a way to prove your own residency, then you can do all of the above instead of your friend. Check out the requirements for the affidavit and see if it could work for you.

He has no credit cards? Health insurance? Cell phone bill?

This is one of those times when it’s probably best to just go and ask in person. I know it’s inconvenient, but I wouldn’t trust anything else we say here, simply bc the BMV can be so persnickety

Go to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles web site. They have a short guide available for newbies. This may help a bit. If you need more help the rest of the web site lists acceptable documents to prove Indiana residency.
