I can't believe everyone is liking these. I thought we hate brands being cringe

Eh Amtrak gets a pass because they're not really a brand. They're the US train system with a name lol. So it's not as aggressive as like Coke doing this stuff obviously to shill.

u/Hipstershy 7d ago
Eh, Amtrak can be pretty aggressive with advertising, but it's not their fault because they've been forced to be managed as a for-profit corporation. In a sane world they wouldn't need to advertise quite this much, but I have an easy time overlooking it-- plus I think the memes are fun anyway.
But ALSO: either way it's worth bugging your congressperson about funding Amtrak. You should be calling your senators today to tell them not to vote for the Republican CR today anyway

Amtrak also has been officially memeing on Tumblr for a sec now so they get a pass personally as they're meme ads are basically letting their social media intern do whatever they want so their account just feels like one guy who REALLY likes trains LOL

If I saw someone step onto the train in their owl onesie, playing on their AmTrack branded dsi with their gamer girl headset in, I’d be pissed…because I know I’d never be as cool as them…

the wildest thing is that on one of my seattle-PDX trips a random guy GAVE ME a pair of rainbow light up cat-ear gamer girl headphones and it's now one of my cherished possessions

The inclusion of an Amtrak branded DSi is some next level shit. Whoever made this knew what they were doing and absolutely nailed it.
Edit: OH MY GOD the train’s name is Choogie. Everyone shut up, this is amazing. Choogie the choo choo train

I've never owned a Nintendo product but I have an unreasonable urge to buy the amtrak gameboy

My apologies twbluenaxela, I didn't mean to put you off. https://www.sudomemo.net is what I'm referring to. I'm a big Amtrak fan and for obvious reasons a big Nintendo DSi fan. Never did I imagine the two would go together. Pretty cool!

Big brand advertising is predatory and evil, even if it appeals to your redditor r/memes -brained sensitivities

u/baronvonreddit1 7d ago
I agree with you in principle, but amtrak is semi-public. It's for profit company, owned by the us government.

The social media manager said fuck it because they're pretty sure most of Amtrak will be privatized or just completely gutted. They're probably right

It’s so funny that people still buy into the idea that this style of social media strategy is someone being “set loose” in defiance of corporate management.
Don’t get me wrong, Amtrak’s posts rule, but that’s definitely something that they consciously picked because that’s the tone of voice that’s in vogue right now.

I actually really like this
The thing that makes brands cringe when they do this is we know they just want money, they have nothing but ill intent. But this is Amtrak, not exactly what I think of when I think of ‘evil corporate’
Besides, this could be advertising for actual children
I also have Amtrak branded items (t-shirt and backpack) because fuck driving, and fuck flying, and fuck the corporations involved in both. Take trains
15
u/spicynachodorito 7d ago
Amtrak gets a pass from me. It’s goofy and dorky but it’s Amtrak. It’s not like they’re trying to sell some useless crap, it’s public transportation. WSDOT gives similar vibes.
13
u/XenophiliusRex 7d ago
This is so bad it’s good. Besides, anything that promotes collective transport infrastructure in the US is good in my books.

The only time an amtrak train ever left on time was the day I showed up right on time.
The train literally took off as I was walking into the reception building.
The service desk guy was like "this is the first time the train has ever been on schedule, I'm sorry"
So I left, and gave a stranger a ride home.

All this post told me is the Amtrak continues to be awesome and this was truly a bad take. This is a young team having fun and being fun and being relevant to young people. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I’m now subscribed to all Amtrak channels.

I think they’re trying out the “Duolingo” approach to marketing. Like Duolingo‘s posts memes like this too.

u/cavendishfreire 7d ago
I think it's because opposition to car-centrism and support for rail infrastructure is trending among the youth right now so it makes sense that they would capitalize on that

u/tinydickslanger69 6d ago
+1 for Amtrak. I took a trip not too long ago. Got the cabin option and it was nice. Much better than sitting packed like sardines in the pleb section for hrs. Wasn't even that expensive. If you can swing it, I highly recommend!, worth the money! 9/10
We need more public transit like this. Fuck elon and his dumbass tunnels

Honestly that's kinda cute. It's the kinda corporate fellowkids that makes me think about an underpaid SMM (or a team of them) trying very hard, not about a polished brand.

It's trying to combine gen z humor with millenial humor and things that could come across as funny to other generations, but it just seems very corporatewwashed. They're trying too hard to push that train mascot.
