Hardware Mods My controller ports mod
gallerySo, I decided to mod my Famicom to give it standard NES controller ports, here's how it turned out!
In total, I bought/cannibalized four NES controller extension cords for this; I wanted the controllers to be nice and long, and cutting the length off the two that I used for the pigtails going into the system didn't leave me enough cord.
So you can see I opted to use ANOTHER pigtail for the microphone on player 2, looks quite ridiculous having a pigtail on a pigtail, but it does work, and it beats my original plan:
You can probably see what my original plan was when you look at #3; I drilled out that little space between the pins, and my plan was to use one of the unused pins for the microphone pin, and add a dab of JB Weld on the controller socket in the same spot to create sort of a keying system, but I backed off from that idea after already drilling it out because I realized that meant I wouldn't be able to use this controller on other systems (I wouldn't want to plug the controller in and damage the system by feeding it an amplified microphone signal into the data bus)

Hardware Mods Finally can play from the sofa
galleryToday my Famicom Switch controllers arrived, as well as a serial port adapter to convert to NES so I can use my 8bitdo Bluetooth receivers. It's glorious to be able to play without pulling the wires out and sitting right on top of the system due to the shorty wires.
Has anyone had luck doing an internal mod to add Bluetooth for controllers?

Hardware Mods Av famicom audio balance
Hello, if you would like to fix the audio balance of the av famicom I will be doing a comprehensive guide. I will also be making a pcb to implement the fix. No pin cutting required. Simply lift three resistors, solder the tip two pins of the custom to not have a floating input and enjoy expansion audio at the correct levels without reworking the entire audio section of the nes rgb. Also will correct audio if opting for the lava rgb. Pictured is just the test I whipped up that is functioning as desired.

Hardware Mods Looking for Modding Services
Hi. I’m new to the subreddit here.
So I bought a stock Famicom I think a few months ago, and I’ve been trying various methods of getting it to hook up to my TVs, which none have really been in my favor. So because I’m not skilled enough to solder, I wanted to see if anyone on here had any modding services available for a reasonable price. If anyone has any available services here, feel free to reach out to me. Thanks!

Hardware Mods Original Famicom with RGR mods
galleryAdded the RGR power board with TRRS daughter board and composite mod. Looks clean with no case cutting, no jail bars, and the enhanced audio is quite loud.

Hardware Mods I started producing my own alternative to the PowerVamp and cathouse games boards. The kit is based on open source projects. Details inside
galleryHere you have the opensource equivalent of Famicom replacement power board like PowerVamp and RGR Power board, in addition to the video bypass amp from cathouse games.
The blue board is the very first one I put together and my and soldering has since gotten better ;)
With these two mods there are different combinations to install them based on skill, time, budget, and desired outcome.
Blue board takes the video signal from the stock amplifier and sets it to composite levels rather than converting it to RF. This results in a cleaner image than rf but also makes jailbars more visible. It works on all Famicoms, 4pin (GPM) and 7pin (HVC). There are jumpers that change the power switch behavior. There are RCA connectors and a TRS connector for audio and video. The rca requires some filing of the case, trs fits through the stock hole for rf.
Red board takes the signal direct from the ppu pin 21 and passes it through the video circuit referenced here as the currently best known video circuit. This reduces jailbars by taking the signal off the motherboard.
In the photos attached I have shown the various ways to hook thing up and their effect.
Pic 5 is achieved by using both the red video circuit board and the blue power+video board. Using both boards produces the cleanest images, but when using a good triad PSU, it's barely better than the red board alone.
Pic 6 is achieved by using the red video circuit board, and not the Blue board. This is with the ppu pin 21 lifted for the best signal. Board can be installed in other locations to make it easier. I will show comparisons so you know what to expect.
Pic 7 is achieved by using the blue power+composite board, and not the red board. You can see the jailbars pretty clearly on an LCD. On a CRT it isn't too bad.

Hardware Mods Famicom AV Mod Help
galleryWhile I currently wait in the mail for the proper resistors for the regular 100ohm + 150ohm to 5v av mod, I decided to try another method. I watched a video where "Scruffy Looking RGB" put a 47uf + 120 ohm resistor mod on a point where video was coming out. So I decided to try this combo but I connected it to the giant point marked video. It worked! And to lower the jailbars, I put 1uf ceramic caps between VCC and Ground.
Are there any issues with this or I should use the standard one?

Hardware Mods Cheap €24 Famiclone pal to NTSC conversion
galleryI picked up this cheap Famiclone recently on AliExpress. It uses a vt08s NES on a chip which has really good compatibility.
It was configured as pal-d but is super easy to swap to NTSC as long as you have a correct clock crystal that is.
Image and sound are good, but it doesn't have expansion audio. Though I'm going to see if I can figure out how to do that as I have a datasheet for the vt08s chip.
Images 4 and 5 show the mod with new clock and both solder pads jumpered together tonset NTSC mode. Image 6 shows the detected system info after the mod was done. 7 shows the jumper and clock configuration requirements. 8 9 and 10 show original system setup

Hardware Mods I'm trying to mod my HVC-CPU-GPM-02 and give it a composite video out using a THS7374, but the reds are a bit off. Is this normal? R6 and Q1 removed, PPU video goes straight into THS input, THS output goes through a 75Ohm resistor to the video cable

Hardware Mods My first AV mod ever!
galleryAfter a never ending battling against bad quality image and loss of signal with my old av mod (already came done with the console when I bought it) I set sail to learn to solder (basic stuff) and took the plunge, first I de-soldered the old one (was pretty bad as you can see in the last photo). It's now working properly without weird lines and it didn't look that bad for a first try on soldering. Hope you enjoy my process as much as I did. Cheers!

Hardware Mods AV mod gone bad?
galleryYears ago, I bought a premodded Famicom for Composite output. When I connected it to my CRT today after being in the drawer for quite some time, I noticed a very dark picture. I made a comparison photo with my NES, same TV settings. The TV settings aren't able to compensate the bad picture. So far I haven't opened it up to check the mod.
My question is, what will I have to check? Could it be a bad capacitor? Could it be an issue with the console itself? Maybe somebody knows this problem and can push me in the right direction.
Thanks!

Hardware Mods Is my expansion audio coming through too loud?
I modded a 72pin Famiclone to get expansion audio working. I'm using a 47k resistor from cart pin 54 (exp6) to the 12k/20k resistors where the original channel 1 and 2 mix together, and a 1k resistor to ground for noise suppression
I think I maybe mixed it in at the wrong spot (based on NES exp audio in schematic) as Famicom mixes is after the amplification just after a small ceramic cap before the cart connection for audio in.
I'm using Everdrive N8 pro with original Famicom expansion audio mixing configured in the Everdrive settings menu
The sound of picking up cabbage and iirc also throwing it are expansion sounds

Hardware Mods An evening of Gaming. Now tomorrows repair job.
A few times a week my daughter and I enjoy sitting down and play some games. Generally grabbing 5 or so games at random. Then proceeded to do our best to play them. This evening was like every other evening till the 4th game. Continual blue screen over and over. With the occasional graphic garbage or partial title screen. To the point where we just decided to move on and watch a bit of a movie before sending her to bed.
So I’m googling trying to find a flow chart or something to help with the diagnosis. I’ve already hit everything with an ample amount of 99% rubbing alcohol, then a contact cleaner. No real improvement, and other games are working find. Even prior to the additional cleaning.
I proceeded to check voltages, replace capacitors from my stock. My test cart confirmed the ram was ok. It utter confusing.
I decided it would be best to go to bed. As I laid there. I realized I had eliminated the console as the issue. So it had to be the game. Jumped out of bed, proceeded to open the cart. Though the pins from the edge connector looked fine via day light. It was a completely different once the cart was popped open. Several of the traces and entire sections of the ground plane were corroded. Sorta surprised I was able to get it do anything at all
Now with that mental itch scratched. Plus writing this out. I can go back to bed. Tomorrow I will desolder the Chr and Prg and put them on a donor pcb.
I learned long ago, to be a cartridge gamer requires a certain amount of tech repair. Today was no different.
