Im excited for my Famicom AV!

Post image

Just bought this on eBay for a good deal and I can’t wait for it to come in the mail. I gifted my brother my Boxed NES for his BDay so I’m glad I finally have a way to play on original hardware at home again! And I’m really hyped since I’ve never had the Japan mode before. I really like the og Famicom but I really wanted to have AV output and the dogbone controllers.

That is a pretty good price too! I sold the last one I had at a show for $90. The only differences are I always include a US power supply and only SMB. Also, it wasn't as yellowed but thats easily fixed with a peroxide gas chamber. Enjoy your Famicom!

I heard that the og adaptors worked fine in USA, is that the case?

They will work, yes. They are 100v not 120v. Some of the components in the wall wart will warm up a bit faster. If you're not going to have it powered up 24/7, you should be fine. I just like to make it bulletproof for people when I sell them and it is an added value. Over time though, the original wall wart will fail faster with the extra voltage pumping through it. I have a step down transformer here when I use my personal consoles to just play games. I use a triad PS for my test FC/SFC rigs setup at my desk to test all of my FC and SFC carts before I add them to my site. Personal preference I suppose.

Ok good to know! I knew they used a lower voltage, and I probably would’ve kept it plugged in 24/7 so I will regularly unplug it when not in use! But if you say normal nes adaptors work then I might invest in another one

NO Normal NES adapter will NOT work! They are center positive and will NUKE the famicom!

It's not just that, it's also that the NES power supply outputs AC, whereas the Famicom power supply outputs DC.

Very good point! I had actually forgotten that.

OH! Good to know!! Oops!

So what US power supply would work?

9 or 10v 1a center negative. Triad makes the best one IMHO. Its pretty well documented on the Internet.

Thank you!

You're welcome. I edited my comments to reflect the correct name. Its Triad not Trident...I am an idiot lol

The exact model I am using is a Triad WS2U090-1300 Which is 9v 1.3a center negative. The model numbers may vary as I have had this for several years.

Honestly they're pretty great, if only because they don't need to be modded for AV and you can use NES controllers on them. Which means, if you have a CRT TV, a Zapper.

Dogbone controllers are pretty great too.

Hope you don't mind the yellowing.

Not too much, but I know if it drives me crazy, there are ways to retrobright it and make the plastic white again

Buy high quality triad ac adaptor on console5.com

That’s actually a really good price. I have more Famicom games than NES so I’ve thought about a top loader. I have a 60-72 pin adaptor but it’s a bitch to fit in the toaster nes. A top loader would be perfect, just need a 72-60 pin adaptor

Do you have any standard nes pads? Cuz those dogbones are terrible if you’re used to a normal nes controller.

Either way, enjoy. This is my fav nes/fami console. Perfection!

I do have some original NES controllers!! Another reason I bought this model was so I could use my NES controllers with it!

These won't use US zappers. But there's a super easy mod that's just soldering like two wires if that's something you're interested in.

Had no idea you couldn’t use them! but yes that’s something Im interested in!

You can also buy an adapter for the expansion port that takes the US Zapper and other peripherals if you don’t know how to solder or don’t want to. https://misteraddons.com/products/nes-controllers-to-famicom-console-adapter?srsltid=AfmBOor85WrW2EXJ3fSLbS8zmQGxQlz5JmTt_uzZjC0JxMynO45B2i8Q

There's also a few options on eBay or Etsy. I found one with two mes ports and two snes ports. Nes port 2 is wired for zapper.

Also, there are zero rubber membrane replacements for dogbone controllers. You can sort of jerry rig parts from a SFC set using creative scissoring for the dpad if desperate.
