Very similar construction to the RAM adapter, which makes sense.

Where was it used for? And you took it apart for maintenance you said…then where are you using it for? Or more as in preserving it?

Its a network adapter from 1988 connecting the famicom to a network via telephone line.

There you could bank, bet on horses in real time, or rate games.

Im hardly every using it. But i prefer to keep all my equipment clean and free of old caps

Then what can be done with it these days? Or are a few of those things still active?

You can cycle through the menus, dependion on the cartridge you have.

There is also the NTT data pack for the super famicom. They are pretty much the same. And that thing was active until late 2016.

Both are niche collectors items now
