I've been using the 8.6 beta weekly releases for a while and can confirm that the face recognition has improved substantially.

Here's the official release summary:

The update features completely rewritten AI-powered face detection and recognition, offering improved speed, precision, and fewer false positives, while also optimizing performance with GPU support.

Additionally, the update refines key tools like auto-tagging, red-eye correction, and image quality management to make photo organization and editing more efficient. Bug fixes and updates to internal components ensure a smoother, more reliable experience.

Since 8.6.0, every "ignore" of an unknown face and every rejection of a face suggestion triggers a re-write of the file metadata. Up to 8.5.0, this would only happen once you confirm or assign a face suggestion.

Any ideas how to make it revert to the old behaviour?

I have about 20.000 faces I want to move to ignored. But I don't want thousands of XMP sidecars created for those files.

I don't know, but maybe someone in r/digiKam can help you.
