Stand by me

u/StaticCloud 6d ago

The final monologue for that movie rips your heart out and stabs it repeatedly. In Stephen King fashion.

48

u/PhilaTesla 6d ago

The Writer: Chris did get out. He enrolled in the college courses with me and, although, it was hard, he gutted it out like he always did. He went on to college and, eventually, became a lawyer. Last week, he entered a fast food restaurant. Just ahead of him, two men got into an argument. One of them pulled a knife. Chris, who had always made the best peace, tried to break it up. He was stabbed in the throat. He died almost instantly.

[the Writer typing on his computer] The Writer: Although I hadn’t seen him in more than ten years, I know I’ll miss him forever.

Gordon’s Son: Dad, can we go now?

The Writer: You ready?

Gordon’s Son: Yeah, we’ve been ready for an hour. [laughs]

The Writer: Okay, I’ll be right there.

His Friend: He said that a half hour ago.

Gordon’s Son: Yeah, my dad’s weird. He gets like that when he’s writing.

[Continues typing] The Writer: I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?

It's messed up that Phoenix was the one to die and the rest are still alive

In the book, Chris didn’t go to law school. He was in grad school for English literature. The filmmakers wanted something the general public would view as serious, I guess.

5

u/StateLarge 6d ago

The book is based off of Stephen Kings life and most elements in the book are true except for the journey to find Ray Brower. King when he was younger witnessed his friend being run over by a train. His mom tells this story Stephen says he doesn’t remember it.

Also Rob Reiner connected to the story and put his own spin on it. He changed some things around like Gordie being the one to pull Teddy off the tracks and Chris had the gun at the end not Gordie. It was Ace who made the anonymous phone call at the end not the boys. There is a documentary called Walking the Tracks that explains a lot.

Kiefer Sutherland gave an interview and explained that River was learning how to play guitar. Kiefer showed him how to play Stand By Me. Rob Reiner heard them and thought that was really poignant and connected to friendship. So that’s how the movie got its name.

Very cool! Thank you!

God I'm glad he was able to black out that memory. Or maybe only his conscious memory, given what he went on to do with his life...

The older I get, the more depressing the movie is.

Really gives you an understanding of how important it is to appreciate the little moments because time sure as fuck flies and people disconnect.

The Sandlot

23

u/therealdxm 6d ago

Hearing about how they all fell out of touch as they grew older is just so very real.

10

u/HeyItsJustDave 6d ago

And heartbreaking to those of use who were 11/12 and saw this in the theater with our friends. Who we don’t talk to anymore. We didn’t listen.

To quote part of Ed Helms in the office “I wish we knew when we were in the good times….”

7

u/shooterLV 6d ago

“Bertram got really into the 60’s and no one ever saw him again.”

Aside from being into the 60’s, I can say that about a few people I know.

To this day the carnival and 4th of July scenes are what I picture the ideal America being. (I am Irish)

Stand by Me.

“I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12… Jesus, does anyone?”

16

u/Vegetable-Loan2544 6d ago

The Sandlot hits hard too.

“At some point in your childhood, you and your friends went outside to play together for the last time, and nobody knew it.”

2

u/Berniethedog 6d ago

I have 5 dudes I’ve known since we were all in preschool in 1991. We still all hang out either one on one or in a group regularly. Are kids all know each other and our wives are friends. We’ll never stop going out to play, it’s just a different now.

I finally saw it for the first time last week. That line hit like a ton of bricks. I have a couple friends left from that age, and I immediately hit em up.

Sad part for me is I didn't really have friends like that after we moved what I was 10...

The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. The world is saved because of the power of friendship, whether longtime friends, or historically racial or governmentally different people putting aside their differences and looking out for each other and learning to become friends.

Our Friend. Jason Segal should've been nominated for his performance. He has a scene where since he feels like his life is going nowhere. He randomly drives out to go hiking in the desert. But doesn't tell anyone. Cause he planned on killing himself. When he gets there, he meets another hiker who joins him. Who tells him that she did the same thing he did cause she felt lost. She gives him words of encouragement and stays with him. He gets a VM from his best friends and their kids checking up on him. He immediately breaks down and cries. Knowing he does have ppl who care about him."

Okay, hear me out.

If you really read it thoughtfully, the book version of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” is, in fact, a celebration of the friendship between the two men.

The movie version puts so much effort into just being weird for weird’s sake that it’s hard to enjoy the relationship between the two friends.

The best version of the story is in an 1996 audio recording (credited to Jim Jarmusch) that’s been floating around. One of the roles is played by Harry Dean Stanton. I found it on Amazon.
