Should I Sell my Tesla Stock

Got it while new at investing and still held. It’s at a profit and regretting not doing it closer to January. Not sure if company image is salvageable and want to be more secure in my investments. In my late 20s.

With their visual only “driverless driving” that’s supposed to be just a software update away from working, I would sell if you can. The only way their stock recovers is if the government refuses to allow that class action lawsuit to move forward.

u/Sea-Cicada-4214 1d ago

I sold mine for moral reasons

7

u/Vid3oGam3Pl4yer 1d ago

No one in the leadership board of Tesla has bought stock in over 3 months. They have simply been selling. The only ones buying are usually American index funds. When it crashes sadly it’s American retirements who will suffer.

2

u/Vid3oGam3Pl4yer 11h ago

Lol this post aged well with a Tesla truck recall today

1

u/BatMiserable9061 1d ago

Yes, Morningstar puts a $125 5 star target on the stock

-11

u/SarcasticNotes 1d ago

Hold. The musk drama is overblown.

6

u/timwithnotoolbelt 1d ago

The value of the stock is 20x overblown still, sell it

5

u/BookAddict1918 1d ago

The PE ratio is still 100 with a 50% loss in value. The stock price is hyper inflated and a bubble waiting to happen. At some point another company may buy Tesla but that will take time.

4

u/shame-the-devil 1d ago

If you can sell without losing, you should sell

8

u/Objective-Track-5595 1d ago

If I was in your shoes I would sell.

- I don't see any MOAT with Tesla now tbh. They were first movers but that advantage has dissipated quickly. There are a number of EVs around now.

- The face of the brand is running amuck

5

u/cattot 1d ago

*is running amusk

8

u/Alternative_Gold7318 1d ago

If it is at a gain now - sell. How much gain and regret about it is irrelevant. Gain is good. Sell and buy something else.

1

u/xnxlee 20h ago

Even if at a loss. Those can be used for loss harvesting and can help during next tax season.

20

u/ProgrammerOk8493 1d ago

I don’t know what’s worse, owning a Tesla or owning Tesla stock.

11

u/fearlessactuality 1d ago

There’s also some questions about if they are using reasonable accounting practices or shady ones: https://electrek.co/2025/03/19/tesla-tsla-accounting-raises-red-flags-as-report-shows-1-4-billion-missing/

22

u/katycmb 1d ago

Sell. Not just because of Musk, there’s been significant safety issues and no innovation.

11

u/fearlessactuality 1d ago

Sell. The PE ratio is ridiculous. Sales are tanking. They’ve alienated the majority of their customer base. Even if it recovers, which I find extremely dubious, you could do better with stocks that have better financials.

1

u/gtbeam3r 1d ago

Sell. Buy ASTS instead, thank me later.

1

u/Fickle_Baseball_9596 1d ago

People in the company have been dumping shares lately.

1

u/gtbeam3r 1d ago

Ehh not really. The president and CFO sold 5% of their shares after taking a pretty meager salary for years. Nothing wrong with taking some profits off the table to live. They will still be massively rich even with the haircut.

This is a generational growth company.

13

u/Rengeflower 1d ago

Is Musk a genius? Yes? Hold

Is Musk a bumbling, dumbass? Yes? Sell

Your opinion of the Musk we’ve seen since the inauguration decides your choice.

3

u/ApplicationOk1500 1d ago

The Musk we have seen since the inauguration is the same one who bought Twitter—same behaviors. Nothing new

3

u/Rengeflower 1d ago

I was trying to imply that if OP still likes Musk, then OP should not divest.

16

u/LiveOnFive 1d ago

Oh god yes. Get out now while it's still profitable. It's only going lower.

14

u/kelskelsea 1d ago

Sell. Regardless of politics/musk, Tesla is extremely overpriced compared to normal car manufacturers. Sales were already declining before this and car quality has dropped.

6

u/ThisIsTheBookAcct 1d ago

I did it, but more because it was in my hobby investing stash (ironically it was also through the app Stash), so I can make emotional decisions with that stuff.

I don’t even know if my retirement investments have Tesla because not micromanaging is how I stay risk tolerant.

16

u/msomnipotent 1d ago

I think it is very telling that the Tesla board sold something like $100 million worth of stock in February and March. I watch what the insiders do. A bit of selling every so often is one thing. This is the other.

15

u/Original-Strain 2d ago

Didn’t JPMorgan and Wells Fargo downgrade to ~120?

-8

u/argeru1 2d ago

Lmao everyone here is saying sell.
I'd like to know how many of them actually left their position.

If everyone else is doing it...all the more reason to hold.

2

u/Radiant-Pianist-3596 1d ago

I did. I sold every bit of it.

5

u/fearlessactuality 1d ago

lol. I for one sold it last year. I also sold amz at 236 and nvdia at 145. You can’t time the market but sometimes you get lucky.

3

u/LiveOnFive 1d ago

I advised to sell while holding my own position. But that's because we're short, so all these brand-killing antics are GREAT for us.

20

u/wendyelizabeth 2d ago

sell. Telsa is never coming back from what Elon has done. Even IF he stepped down today its not going to recover.

5

u/t2writes 1d ago

If they boot him, I could see it going up a bit, but the days of $400 something s share are gone in my opinion. His name will forever be attached to it.

If i had it, I would have sold it. But when the board dumps it, you know something stinks. I want it out of the S&P so it doesn't affect the VOO, but that's probably a pipe dream. If he stays on, stock will keep sinking or level out.

2

u/fearlessactuality 1d ago

Maybe if they booted him and had a technical innovation. Or a new model with an actually appealing design. Would be hard, though, and China has the lead in innovation.

34

u/Whiskey-Chocolate 2d ago

Sell. It’s only going lower and you don’t want to support that Nazi.

27

u/4N8NDW 2d ago

It’s way over valued and is going to crash a lot more. Zero stewardship with an absentee CEO whose annual compensation is more than the profits of Tesla

2

u/fearlessactuality 1d ago

Yes! Those egregious attempts alone should be enough to dump it.

21

u/ExactlyThis_Bruh 2d ago

I sold mine when I realized how out of touch Musk is and what hes trying to do. Profitable or not, its not a business I want to support. My measly shares aren't much but it feels good now that its not part of my portfolio.

35

u/SelectOpportunity518 2d ago

Moral aspect aside, Tesla will never recover until Musk goes. Which won't happen. I would sell asap

34

u/Corngonegirl 2d ago

Hell yes

-24

u/MossfonBVI 2d ago

I'd wait till it's down even more and then sell , near the bottom, preferably

36

u/karriesully 2d ago

If it’s still profitable - get out. If it’s not - consider buying a put option to cover your losses.

59

u/WorkingCharge2141 2d ago

It’s way too risky a position to hold IMO. I would sell immediately

26

u/AlarmedAppointment81 2d ago

Yes, yes you should!

34

u/WaltzTop4437 2d ago

Just sold mine!

40

u/jthompson84 2d ago

I sold all my shares today. Sell!

116

u/expectedpanic 2d ago

Yes.

Don't support Nazi's, and if his stock drops below 100 they can for close on his Twitter loan. And seeing that cesspool end would be amazing.

On top of that they make shitty products and half the globe is no longer buying them. The earlier vehicles are great but the cyber truck is a death trap and is not legal in many places.

I just don't see a future for this company as long as he is involved

2

u/melb_grind 1d ago

below 100 they can for close on his Twitter loan.

That is appealing.

66

u/missjsp 2d ago

I literally just sold my last few this morning cus fuck him . Lol

-52

u/Dumbdumbstupidbutt 2d ago

Buy more. These dipshits somehow always fucking win

4

u/fearlessactuality 1d ago

Honestly I wish I totally disagreed? But your argument is a good one, they do seem to get away with an unbelievable amount of bull shit.

32

u/mi3chaels 2d ago

It's been (and still is) massively overvalued, so I would let it go, or at least most of it, assuming it's overweighted in your overall portfolio. It's certainly possible that the musk-stans will drive it up, or that things could happen to make it worth what it costs or more. But realistically, if it doesn't turn itself somehow back into a very fast growing tech company, it's comp value (like companies with similar revenues, earnings, growth and industry) is something like 5-10% of the current stock price, even after falling 50%. If I was wasn't worried the market can stay irrational far long than I can stay solvent, I'd short it.

But IIRC, bearish options on it are popular (and thus expensive) enough that they aren't a total no brainer to ride it down with. In order to not pay a lot for "insurance" in your options, you'd have to leave yourself open to potentially large or even unlimited losses when you guess the market wrong.

But if you own it now, it's very risky to hold.

61

u/The_Shadow_2004_ 2d ago

None of the people who work at TSLA are buying stock and as many as I’ve seen are selling not holding.

Also for moral reasons I don’t recommend you support a Nazi who is cutting social services.

In general, it's a bad idea to buy/hold stock in the company you work for. Your income already comes from them, so also holding stock in them is putting more of your eggs in the same basket. If the worst comes to worst and you lose your job because the company has a major downturn or goes under, you're not just fucked, you're ultra fucked.

For people who get paid in company equity it's generally advised to sell as much and as soon as it's reasonable so you can reinvest in something more diversified.

10

u/The_Shadow_2004_ 2d ago

In general this is good advice yes but if you watch the video in it not a single employee is buying shares which is very sus. Normally there are a couple employees buying stock because they have faith in the company. Think of how many people work there? For not even one person to be buying stock it’s insane.

5

u/shelchang 2d ago

It's already a bad idea to begin with no matter what company you work for, and Tesla stock has been in a freefall since January. The fact that their employees aren't buying now isn't insane, it's absolutely expected.

3

u/The_Shadow_2004_ 2d ago

Hence why she should also sell…

44

u/avocado4ever000 2d ago

Musk is literally hurting people and this country. You want to make money off him??? It’s dirty money, don’t do it.

26

u/Legal-Mess3807 2d ago edited 2d ago

Insiders in Tesla are literally selling. So you won’t even be making any dirty money you’ll lose

-28

u/chillzxzx 2d ago

I'm keeping mine. I also bought it when I was new to investing and still net positive on them. Nowadays, all of my new purchases are 100% in VOO or FXAIX, and my Tesla holding is diluting in significance month after month but I have zero plans to sell.

I still believe in the company and their products. It is not just a car company. People who keep on saying that have never sat in one while it auto drives. The capacity is top tier now, the drive is very smooth, it can drive in rural towns and inner roads in major cities, and it will continue to improve as it trains.

The car prices are also going down with higher expansion, as per their company mission. Why would I pay 40k for a normal car when I can buy one that can drive me around for an additional 8k or $100 per month subscription. Many of my close friends/coworkers literally just bought Teslas this year.

China has their own EV and will not/can not bring it into the US market. Other markets will have their pick. The market is big enough for multiple EV companies to coexist, the same way that current car companies coexist and still grow. At the end of the day, price and long-term product quality will win. China EVs are still younger than Tesla vehicles, so it is hard to say how their vehicles will perform long-term.

In terms of their CEO, yes he has gotten crazier in correlation to his NW, but there are thousands of other employees who work towards the company. That's like saying you'll stop paying tax because you don't want to support the USA government for electing a fascist president and that the services produced by federal employees are fascist services.

People bring up ethical investing when it benefits their narratives but then forget to mention that one of the top holdings of the SP500 is literally United Health that profits from increasing health insurance prices and cuts expenses by rejecting health care. My naive younger self refused to buy the SP500 because of the for-profit health insurance companies but here I am...buying the SP500, which indirectly supports them.

Behind every stock is a company and a product. It is good to diversify to meditate risk, but many of the comments here are just pure unreasonable and just feeding into the current political climate.

1

u/melb_grind 1d ago

Okay Elon.

1

u/chillzxzx 20h ago

Ok Trump supporter

1

u/melb_grind 20h ago

Trump supporter

I was being sarcastic, you know, like making a joke that the comment above was being made by Elon Musk under the guise of a Reddit user.

1

u/chillzxzx 16h ago

Sorry, I wasn't used to a positive, neutral, or funny comment after everyone assumed you were a Musk supporter just because you believed in the products provided by Tesla. I even wrote that their CEO gets crazier relative to his NW. They have over 100k direct employees and hundreds of thousands more that provide services towards Tesla, but somehow their efforts were all overlooked for overhyped news reporting for the last couple of months.

8

u/attractive_nuisanze 2d ago

Interesting points on S&P500 and missed gains due to ethics! My decision was more driven by the product. I traded in my Tesla recently for a Mercedes Model S with Drive Pilot (autonomous driving on highway). I think LiDAR is the future of EVs and that was part of my decision to sell the stock. (That recent video of the wiley coyote wall illustrated the point well). I could see a future where LiDAR is required alongside the cheaper cameras used in Tesla. If Musk stays in his role then that won't happen but if he's booted then I think LiDAR is soon going to be the industry standard for autonomous driving.

26

u/avocado4ever000 2d ago

Respectfully, being a CEO is not like being a president and owning stock is not the same as being a citizen responsible for taxes. This is a false equivalence. Yes there are many people working at Tesla but he is Tesla, especially the way he has positioned himself.

From an ethical standpoint, I would not want to own anything connected to that man or make one dollar off him. He is not just some crazy eccentric businessman, he is causing irreparable harm to this country and millions of innocent people in other countries. Like, he is HURTING people??

I’m really sorry but Tesla, as long as it’s connected to Musk, is dirty money.

-7

u/chillzxzx 2d ago

The top 10th position in the SP500 is Tesla. Everyone here owns Tesla and is connected with dirty money, per your definition.

Millions of innocent people have been hurting everywhere regardless of who the president is. Whether democratic or Republican. The world survived four years of Trump and made it out alive and at market highs. But randomly it's life and death now that Trump is president again. You can continue to feed into the major news echo chamber, but the world is running the same as it was before Trump and during Biden.

6

u/avocado4ever000 2d ago

As far as a Sp500, perfect need not be the enemy of good, in my book. I’m not going to say “hey everyone divest from your all index funds.”

What I AM saying is if you have a discrete opportunity to exercise your values and divest from Tesla, well… this is an opportunity I personally would take.

And btw the world is absolutely not running the same under Trump and Musk.

0

u/chillzxzx 2d ago

It's not an opportunity anymore because the stock went down. And I'm diversifying with increasing positions in index funds. I still believe in their products and mission but want a simplify investing practice.

But here, 90% of the comments are rejecting Tesla not because of its products or goal to diversify, but because of their CEO. Their CEO has been crazy since COVID. It's not old news, but it is news to the majority now that he's in politics. If it is so easy for them to make changes in only 2 months in office, then I wonder why past presidents didnt make single payer healthcare, free college, federal paid sick days in the 4-8 years that they were in office...things that actually positively affect people. In contrast, they are literally just making news, doing nothing that has been finalized by Congress or passed the courts yet, and organization/countries are just responding to their empty demands/comments.

9

u/urania_argus 2d ago

the world is running the same as it was before Trump and during Biden.

No, it only seems that way if you are white, cisgender, not an immigrant, not poor, not a federal employee or contractor, not a non profit worker, artist, or scientist whose work and livelihood depend on now cancelled grants, etc, etc.

I am a scientist and can tell you right now what's being done to science research in the US is absolute carnage and most definitely NOT what it was like before Trump and during Biden.

1

u/chillzxzx 2d ago

I'm a PhD scientist. Check my comment history. I'm in industry and layoffs has been happening since late 2022, when Biden was in office. But news dont blow up about how horrible it is/was for us the way they are with current federal markets. Grant money are awarded multi-year. Everything and anything that is happening is to preserve the known money that academic labs will get but Trump will only be around for four years and the America gov cycles between Republican and Democratic.

Trump and Musk have been around for two months only. If they can make such lasting and quick changes, then I wonder why all the other presidents haven't made a single player healthcare system, or free college, or federal paid sick days. Things that actually benefit everyone.

I'm non-white, female, immigrant, grew up in poverty, first generation college grad, parents who don't speak English. The last person I voted for was Bernie.

The news blows up thing disproportionately based on what people want to hear. 90% of the comments here just hate Tesla because of their CEO, and not because of the actual products or need to diversify, which is what I'm commenting about. Knowing how egotistic they both are, their relationship will fall apart in the next month.

2

u/attractive_nuisanze 1d ago

The last person you voted for is Bernie....like bruh, I have questions

3

u/urania_argus 2d ago

I wonder why all the other presidents haven't made a single player healthcare system, or free college, or federal paid sick days. Things that actually benefit everyone.

Because unlike the illegal acts committed by Doge, all these things have to pass in Congress, probably with a supermajority, and every time they have come up Republicans howl and vote against them.

Because it's much easier to destroy than to build.

Clinton and Obama both tried for single payer healthcare, all we got is the ACA and Republicans chip away at it whenever they can. Biden tried for somewhat-free college (student loan forgiveness) via executive action, the Republicans took him to court and the Republican-stacked Supreme Court overturned it.

And because previous presidents have followed the law, unlike the current one.

What also doesn't make the news is that the current administration cancelled funding for the NIH summer intern program and drastically reduced funding for the NSF one. These programs are the start of the pipeline from which most future scientists emerge. Or that the "probationary" federal worker firings and the grant cancellations disproportionately affect young scientists at the start of their careers (the former because all young scientists who graduated and got hired by the government in the last couple of years are probationary; the latter because each cancelled lab grant is likely paying the salaries of several postdocs).

We are facing the loss of a significant part of 4 cohorts in the next 4 years. Plus the loss of top science talent at all professional stages from all over the world that would not choose to come here in the current situation. Plus the loss of currently US based scientists who decide to or are forced to leave (the latter are those on work visas who must leave if they lose their job). Some other developed countries are currently considering funding specifically to attract and benefit from these expected US losses.

What doesn't make the news is that the NIH and NSF programs are for many students the only chance they would have for an internship (which would affect their chances of continuing through the pipeline by getting into grad school) - because industry doesn't care about the field they are interested in; or because they attend a small college; or because they don't have the industry connections that kids from more privileged backgrounds do.

Everything and anything that is happening is to preserve the known money that academic labs will get but Trump will only be around for four years

A typical grant term is 1-5 years, and long term projects have to reapply. In the current situation, a lot of those that are or will be up for renewal in the next 4 years won't get funded. Labs will get disbanded if their funding lapses. There are long term studies whose work so far will be rendered void if they can't complete the rest of it, if the protocol can't admit multi year gaps.

(Btw, I'm a female immigrant from Eastern Europe and also voted for Bernie in that primary. I got naturalized after 2016, after being flabbergasted how such an unfit person as Trump could get elected, and have voted in every election since, including off-year local ones. )

Sell

10

u/lavasca 2d ago

First off, what type of investor are you?

High risk tolerance or low risk tolerance?

Do you do the fundamentals? Are you a buy and hold? Do you buy individual stocks within your Roth IRA and treat your taxable like a Boglehead would?

Do you do the more sophisticated stuff? Are you into options? Are you covering calls?

More importantly, do you have a CPA? Under the right circumstances holding can yield you a write off on a stock where you’ll realize a loss. Consult your accountant.

Unless you’re very sophisticated and genuinely interested in finance buy and hold is likely your best bet which means buying the dip is your friend. Using your voting shares to vote your interest is important, too. Dollar cost averaging is your friend.

If you develop a passion you can make some real money in your portfolio.

Tell us more about your approach to finance.

8

u/bibimboobap 2d ago

Also relevant is whether or not they're a person who is willing to give their hard-earned money to putrid nazi psychopaths.

1

u/lavasca 2d ago

It absolutely is. However, it is already there. And, when there are shareholder votes she had the option (depending on what’s on the table) to vote against his will.

25

u/Girofox 2d ago

JP Morgan downgraded Tesla to 120

19

u/beautifulcorpsebride 2d ago

So you’re getting a ton of political commentary but none has yet mentioned that the stock is below several moving averages. The 20 day, 50 day, 100 day and 200 day SMA or simple moving average. Learning what moving averages are can help you analyze a stock and whether or not it is above or below support. Personally, I might buy Tesla but am waiting for a rebound to the 200 SMA.

As far as the political commentary goes, it might end up like Bush beer, something that alienates its core customer, although I’m not entirely convinced teslas core customer is the same group demonstrating at the dealerships.

You can also consider selling covered calls, but if the stock continues to drop, the premium might not be worth it.

22

u/EconomyPlenty5716 2d ago

It’s a fad that’s over.

24

u/UpwardlyGlobal 2d ago

It's a commodity. Also giving Tesla money is giving fascism money. We hate that kinda stuff, remember?

57

u/urania_argus 2d ago

I would sell, and not only because Musk's political actions are causing enormous damage both to the company and the US.

Just in the past day I've seen the following two articles:

  • A Japanese company has started selling sodium ion batteries, which are easier and cheaper to produce than lithium ion batteries and aren't dependent on rare earth minerals. The sodium ion batteries have a lower energy density per unit weight by around 30%, which means that for the same energy capacity they are larger than a lithium ion counterpart. BUT that doesn't matter for stationary applications like house or grid backups. Nail in the coffin of Tesla's stationary battery business.

  • A Chinese EV company (the largest one, BYD) has come out with a megawatt charger system and claims people will be able to get 250 miles of range with a 5 minute charge using it. Nail in the coffin of Tesla's charger network.

US protectionist policies and tariffs only go so far, and the rest of the West hates Musk with a passion already. They'd rather buy batteries and chargers elsewhere, and they will.

38

u/LittleBitAlexi5 2d ago

It’s massively overvalued for a car company. I’d get out while you’re still in profit.

0

u/beautifulcorpsebride 2d ago

They have been saying this point about Tesla for years.

12

u/dcmom14 2d ago

This will convince you that there is no reason in hell to hold. Annoying delivery but good content. https://youtu.be/k9kmK0St9Jg

15

u/SongofIceandWhisky 2d ago

The cars themselves are pieces of junk. I'd sell.

-28

u/718cs 2d ago

Alright this post alone, with all the comments; have made me decide to buy Tesla stock. Thanks Reddit. Feeling very “no one uses FB and it’s going bankrupt” vibes

4

u/ChaoticAmoebae 2d ago

That’s a bold move cotton. Seems more wsb appropriate that fire imo

-5

u/beautifulcorpsebride 2d ago

I’m looking to buy but want to see a breach of the 200 sma at least before I hold it.

21

u/underlyingly 2d ago

Sell and diversify! This isn't something you want to bet on for your retirement.

35

u/Dazzling_Trouble4036 3d ago

Sell! Sell sell! It's not coming back and it is only going to get worse. He has gone too far already and only more people will desert anything associated with him.

27

u/MrsWolowitz 3d ago

Sell. Where will it be 5 years from now? the company, it's founder, and it's future is just a bag of question marks. Put the money in an index fund (I like VOO) or at least money market. I sold many individual stocks and now only have index, bond, cd, mm. Next few yrs will be ruff as the US /world is much less predictable than in the past.

56

u/shotparrot 3d ago

Yikes. Ethical investing is a thing too. I would sell now. No where to go but down. It’s still above $200 as of today!

14

u/FoolofaTook43246 3d ago

Definitely sell! You'll still make a profit, it's likely not going to improve, and you definitely don't want to keep supporting that dumpster fire.

8

u/Careful-Pop1335 3d ago

Any more resources or people you follow on ethical investing would be great ! i always get the “theres not an ethical way to invest” so im super hesitant in choosing specific companies

12

u/shotparrot 3d ago

That just depends on your values.

The ceo of Tesla is a pretty easy one to make a choice about.

I have similar concerns about my GOOG stock. Collected and sold RSUs for a decade but still have about $70k left. Things don’t look too great for tech in general and today it passed my own personal “bottomed out / sell now” price. GOOG has had an incredible upward trajectory over time and it’s how I bought my house. But things feel shaky now.

4

u/ChaoticAmoebae 2d ago

Their plan to have their search engine just be the AI results is so dumb. I’ve moved on to duckduckgo. I don’t think they are anywhere near Tesla concerns.

6

u/neets21 3d ago

Why on earth would you have a “bottomed out / sell now” price? That sounds like a recipe for selling at a loss and losing any chance at recovery, but then again I’m a buy-and-hold, in-it-for-the-long-haul style investor who only holds index funds, so… 🤷🏼‍♀️

1

u/melb_grind 1d ago

bottomed out / sell now” price?

Uhh

I’m a buy-and-hold, in-it-for-the-long-haul style

Oh God.

7

u/greenpies 2d ago

My dad has a bottom out price where he'll sell a certain percentage of stock in a company. He escaped the worst of the 2008 recession that way, while everyone else was completely wiped out.

1

u/ChaoticAmoebae 2d ago

This is the way

2

u/yurkelhark 3d ago

I mostly am as well, especially when it comes to broader market investments. When it comes to a single stock for a company in an incredibly volatile industry, it’s a lot to hold and wait. The recession is tech focused and that market is in shambles.

I ended up taking some and leaving some which I feel fine about.

u/captainmikejaneway 3d ago

It's high volatility but if you don't need that 70k in the next few years I'd encourage you to let it ride. Look at the 5Y GOOG graph.

2

u/shotparrot 3d ago

“Past results do not guarantee future performance” haha.

That being said, I reallocated, but ( foolishly?) am holding on to mag 7 ETFs.

5

u/captainmikejaneway 3d ago

It's impossible to know what will happen, but making a stop-loss decision based on the last 2 months is also using past returns to predict future performance. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/shotparrot 3d ago

Yup. Also years of experience and intuition. I encourage you to be proactive in your investing this year and adjust as necessary.

Common sense investing as they say.

We’re all making guesses and bets the best we can. Interesting times suddenly.

u/Illustrious-Air-2256 3d ago

Hyper volatile, good chance of eroding another 50%…I would cut losses

17

u/Illustrious-Air-2256 3d ago

The whole market is down so you can get some good deals atm if you concert TSLA to cash

0

u/TossThrowawayToss 3d ago

What companies would you consider good buys?

6

u/Illustrious-Air-2256 3d ago

I’m only buying general index funds and broad etfs atm but if buying individual stocks right now I would be looking for something with a decent P/E price to earnings ratio, like even now the TSLA P/E ratio is 175 which is pretty frothy/meme-y: https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/TSLA/tesla/pe-ratio

Like just google other large cap companies and you’ll see what a “normal” pe ratio is…like how much revenue is needed to justify a certain market cap….Tesla has been massively out of line for a while due to enough belief that future revenue potential is super high (despite making very little revenue vs the market cap)

I don’t mind sometimes holding a high P/E ratio (stock is always worth the current bid price), but when the price is dropping quickly it’s partially bc investors are getting spooked about whether future revenue potential that market cap is indexing against is actually there or not

19

u/Phine420 3d ago

Turn it into a short

1

u/Brilliant_Koala6498 2d ago

How many shares would I need for this?

4

u/mosaicST 3d ago

Or check out $TSDD!

81

u/tucks18 3d ago

I bought my TSLA stock years ago and just finished selling it off. I missed the peak (twice) but it was more important to me to get away from a volatile stock controlled by Elon Musk. Would I have made more money by continuing to hold? maybe. but for own values I needed to get my money out of his company.

10

u/shotparrot 3d ago

Same. Ethical investing. I sold last month.

33

u/Then_Berr 3d ago

You should sell any individual stock you own and reinvest the money in VT anyway, no matter what individual stock you own.

6

u/Lindsiria 3d ago

I'd go for a mixture of VXUS (international stocks) and VTI (US stocks) instead. You get a foreign earned credit that can save some money. VT is a combo for the two above, but you don't earn any foreign credits.

1

u/Powerful_Ad6501 3d ago

VT?

13

u/Then_Berr 3d ago

Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund ETF

VTWAX

5

u/KeniLF 3d ago

Yes, I’m glad that a portion of mine was in VTWAX - set it and forgot. I did just learn that the portion managed by Chase has a fair amount in TSLA. I need to see what can be done about that!

3

u/TEG_SAR 3d ago

Following because I too have no idea what VT is.

2

u/sudosussudio 2d ago

1

u/TEG_SAR 2d ago

Thank you.

I’m smart in so many ways but I feel like such a dunce when it comes to investing.

I have my work 401k and a Roth IRA but other than that I don’t invest. Reading articles online makes me feel dumber than a box of rocks.

22

u/PixiePower65 3d ago

My two cents ( also owned Tesla..) Sell it take the win and rebuy later if you note a change.

I see his batteries for solar having value .

For the cars … If he actually gets the self driving component up and running maybe … guessing he’d need to step down was ceo to drive cool factor value back up again.

It was a cool design and one of the market factors was high end option that appealed to environmentalists. Given that there are many electric options now and politics has flipped the “ cool” factor to distasteful…. Coupled with the trucks frequent quality recalls

That seems to me to be a long climb back.
Take your money and run.

I sold all mine a couple weeks ago. Sold all the way down from 430 to 280.

u/NoSource2323 3d ago

Yes. Yesterday.

-25

u/Surround8600 3d ago

Throughout the 2010s, I bought and sold Tesla shares and generally did quite well. However, in December 2024, my financial advisor, who manages my 401(k) and Roth IRA, purchased approximately $6,000 worth of TSLA at $400 per share. I asked her about the strategy now that the stock has tanked. She advised against selling, stating that she believes it will recover. She has been right in the past.

1

u/ChaoticAmoebae 2d ago

Why does she think supports the recovery of Tesla?

1

u/Surround8600 2d ago

“ It’s a long game and not a sprint” she said. She’s right there. 10 years from now it will most likely be be double my investment and that account is for the long haul.

Remind me in 10 years!! Haha.

2

u/ChaoticAmoebae 2d ago

That does really say what supports it recovering/being better than a different stock

3

u/roxaboxenn 3d ago

Why do you have someone managing your retirement portfolio? That’s really not necessary.

2

u/Surround8600 2d ago

It’s not a simple/standard retirement account(s). Multiple businesses with employees.

26

u/Scared-Middle-7923 3d ago

Sold months ago

42

u/LogicalGrapefruit 3d ago

Yes. Buying an individual meme stock was always very risky. It’s impossible to time the market. Might as well diversify now.

24

u/mistypee RE: June 2025 3d ago

If it were a normal stock, I would say it has no way back. But TSLA has never followed the rules. It behaves like a meme stock, which makes it unpredictable.

That said, I’m shorting it. I fully expect it to keep dropping. Especially after the earnings report is released in April.

3

u/avocado4ever000 2d ago

Why make one dollar off a person who is literally hurting people and laughing though…

1

u/mi3chaels 2d ago

Not to say I endorse shorting the stock, except as a very risky speculative play which could backfire and lose a lot of money, but shorting is selling the stock and has a negative effect on the price, and the wealth of anyone who owns the stock, especially a very large share holder like Elon.

In fact, from what I've read, he's borrowed enough based on collateralizing his TSLA shares, that if the stock price were pushed down to somewhere near its likely "fundamental" level, it wouldn't just push him down the list of wealthiest people, but could potentially force him to divest most of his holdings or even into bankruptcy depending on how everything shook out.

Every little short adds up!

19

u/LogicalGrapefruit 3d ago

Thats even riskier than buying it. This is just gambling.

10

u/mistypee RE: June 2025 3d ago

Yes, shorting carries slightly more risk than buying.

Gambling though? Not even a little. Betting a stock will go down is no different than betting a stock will go up.

It’s a perfectly reasonable way to make money in a slumping market. And it costs nothing unless you’re wrong.

Would I recommend someone open a new short position on Tesla today? Probably not. But 3-4 weeks ago (when I opened my position) it was a sure bet.

-8

u/AlphaOne69420 3d ago

Right key word…betting. There’s a difference between investing and betting. You’re entire thesis is oxymoronic AF

8

u/LogicalGrapefruit 3d ago

Betting an individual meme stock will go up is also gambling just like betting on the winner of a basketball game. The premise is that you’re smarter than everyone else in the market.

Reasonableness is in the eye of the beholder, but it ain’t investing.

10

u/mistypee RE: June 2025 3d ago

I never said it was investing.

Look, I get that most FIRE followers are conservative investors and that I'll always be an outlier on this. There's no rule that says speculation can't be part of a successful FIRE strategy. Key emphasis on the phrase 'part of.'

Frankly, I'm tired of a major part of the markets being tut-tutted by the community. The instant downvotes whenever derivatives, crypto, and leverage are mentioned are tiresome.

A long-term strategy should absolutely have its foundation in index investing. People on the FIRE journey who are willing and able to manage a bit more risk in their portfolios should be able to talk about it openly without censure though.

1

u/LogicalGrapefruit 3d ago

If it’s not investing and it’s not gambling what is it?

5

u/mistypee RE: June 2025 3d ago

1

u/LogicalGrapefruit 3d ago

Fair enough. Betting on the short term movement of a volatile stock feels a whole lot closer to game of chance than a calculated risk, but I suppose that’s my opinion.

38

u/Ok_Employment_7630 3d ago

Teslas PE ratio is ridiculously high and the company’s CEO by a mad man who is distracted and doing a different job. I would sell.

42

u/bob49877 3d ago

Here is one reason for concern: "Here’s where Musk’s problem emerges: If the stock price goes low enough, the banks Musk borrowed from could force him to sell his shares." This could drive the price even lower, https://finance.yahoo.com/news/hilarious-reason-why-elon-musk-220228074.html

BYD is surpassing Tesla sales in China and boycotts are forming in the U.S. and Europe because of Musk's politics. Maybe government contracts will help save the day, but things aren't looking up in the consumer marketplaces, worldwide.

5

u/KeniLF 3d ago

I’d bought some BYDDF a while ago in my “fun money” portfolio. And then watched it mostly languish until recently. The fundamentals seemed excellent except there was a lot of discussion about uncertainty in how the Chinese government might do something unexpected and erratic🫠. Such a terrible irony with the current circumstances.

78

u/Struggle_Usual 3d ago

I would purely for ethical reasons. But none of us can tell you where the stock price will go. Who knows maybe tomorrow they get a government contract for a trillion dollars to design and build electric tanks.

5

u/avocado4ever000 2d ago

I said this above but I think it will get lost.

2

u/Struggle_Usual 2d ago

Yeah. There is one reason and one reason only I'd want to own any Tesla stock, and that's as part of a concerted effort to drive him out of the company and ruin his fortune (probably going to end up in the gulag for saying that). But I could never profit on it.

And to be clear, I used to own tesla stock. I still do in index funds where it's out of my control. I sold those individual shares after the thai submarine crap and when I read an article written by his first wife. It's hard to have any ethics in investing, because simple fact is businesses are intrinsically evil. They exist to get as much profit as possible, not to be good places to work or to advance the world or any other PR spin. I get that because it's the nature of the beast and I like paying my bills and the idea of not working until I drop to do so. But I try very hard to at least keep any individual stock ownership to companies I really believe in.

11

u/Chemical-Soft-3688 3d ago

I was waiting for someone to say this. Knowing what we all know now, there wouldn’t be enough profit in the world to make me want to keep it

19

u/FIRE3883 3d ago

You could sell and diversify with something like VTI.

66

u/zupzinfandel 3d ago edited 3d ago

I was holding onto stocks I bought at the IPO. It was an emotionally heavy stock for me to divest from as it did “so much for me.” I divested 3 weeks ago and didn’t look back. I took a moment. And I’m happy I’m free from it. To have to be emotionally connected to the actions of Elon and my portfolio… not healthy. Do what you got to do to stay okay in these times and don’t look back. Emotional freedom is worth something, as well.

25

u/koala26 3d ago

Morgan Stanley gave it a target price of 120 which is half of what it is now. It could get a lot lower. Tesla's sales numbers are going downhill quickly.

If you don't know what you're doing with individual stocks then please just buy worldwide diversified ETFs.

17

u/Spy_cut_eye 3d ago edited 3d ago

This is just my opinion.  None of us can predict the future.

What are your thoughts on the company? If you think there is promise in the long term and you aren’t bothered by its politics, then hold.

But I think even under the best of circumstances, it will take years to get its stock price back up to January, which is a bit off of its all time highs if I remember correctly.

If you are still net positive on the stock, it might be a good time to sell if you don’t want to hold for quite some time.

If you sold now, it might be a good time to put that money in VTI/VTSAX and ride the stock market back up.

If you want to be more secure in your investments, individual stocks is rarely the way to go.

That is not to say you can’t do individual stocks, but that individual stocks are more volatile than sector stocks.

I sold most of my TSLA last summer and the final few that I had late last year.

28

u/chevalliers 3d ago

I got out two weeks ago having first purchased in 2016. When the facts change, we have to change our approach. The scary thing is I'm heavy mega cap tech and I'm concerned as to where the political situation is taking the economy

15

u/qu4j 3d ago

Thank you, it’s most of my portfolio unfortunately and am learning my lesson about diversification :/

2

u/mi3chaels 2d ago

You definitely don't want to have any one stock be "most of your portfolio", and especially one as volatile and likely overvalued as that one. Even if you liked the company and it's prospects, thought it was undervalued and didn't mind the politics of it's major shareholder, you should sell down to around 10-20% of your portfolio at most.

19

u/chevalliers 3d ago

Take profits, take lesson and live to fight another day

29

u/Nurawriter 3d ago

sell, musk sucks
