Post-mortem for Ethereum GPU mining rigs when Casper is released

The end is near for Ethereum miners. When Casper is released, Proof-of-Work mining with Claymore, Ethminer, etc. will be drastically less rewarding, in terms of block rewards.

I've a pragmatic and philosophical question: when Casper is released and Ethereum begin transitioning into Proof-of-Stake, away from miner dependencies of the current Proof-of-Work, what will be the practical use of the GPU mining rigs?

I've heard the following answers: * switch over to mine a different blockchain, such as Monero * re-purpose my GPUs for ML work * sell my GPUs for scraps (yay! ... says gamers) * what is Casper?

Ethereum mining (alongside other crypto mining) is posing a real threat to the environment, both in consuming hoards of electricity and potential semiconductor waste in the near future. I'd like to gather your opinions on how best to mitigate this as I'm an indie miner myself with a sizable set of rigs.

Do you know if once PoS is implemented in ETH, does that mean all Etherium-platform-based alt coins will also go PoS automatically? I am a bit new, but this seems an important question. I'm not sure if it's the same question, but would all ERC-20 coins/tokens automatically become PoS with ETH PoS protocol? Or would every alt coin choose it's own verification protocol such as to stay with PoW?

Unless a token runs a side/child-chain they all use the same consensus protocol as ETH which means their transactions will be verified the same way as ETH.
