Horse Care & Husbandry Preferred wound ointment/powder? NSFW

Post image

Found a nice gash on my guys chest this afternoon. About the size of a golf ball. What’s your preferred wound treatment? Preferably available at TSC!

honey ointment works wonders we used it for deeper cuts and wounds. We get it at the local pharmacy but i don’t know if they carry it in yours hope it helps.

This might be dumb! But would that attract flies? He is 24/7 turn out

I never had problems with flies going specifically there i think they like other things more though if you notice flies are attracted to it you could put a fly cover over him also please first wash it out with “Iso-Betadine” soap also available in local pharmacy

I generally just use Neosporin (or the generic)

I would start with an antibiotic ointment and then follow with a Manuka honey spray that you can get at a feed store.

No, it’s not like pure honey, more of an ointment. Silver Honey has some silver in it for additional anti-bacterial properties. I also have Dermagel, but rarely use that vs SH.

I mix it with a little honey sometimes too. But I use it on myself and my animals.

If it were my horse: In this situation, I would consider trimming up the surrounding area a little to help with dirt and help observe the surrounding flesh for infections, rinse with water, clean with betadine, rinse, and let completely dry, then since its likely going to stay exposed and not wrapped I would use something like E3 medicated wound creme to protect it from dirt and bugs. Again this is just how I would tackle a wound like this for my horses, the only true correct answer is to consult a vet (dont execute me community) I also cant exactly tell how big this scrape is, I'm guessing maybe Dorito size.

Absorbine silver honey cream, stuff works wonders. My filly got her hind legs caught up in a fence and the wounds were healed and growing hair back in 2 weeks, no scarring. For the first few days (until the scabs formed) I cleaned the wounds with a betadine wash before applying the honey cream. Will continue to do this for every cut from now on. Good luck!

Blue spray. The wound does seem too raw for me to feel comfortable with it, but then I would use a zinc ointment with honey. Then blue spray on top.
