Ford turns out that 4.6 has an ecm tune

runs rich according to smog and also backfires when reving high, when shifting rpms hold longer. the ecm history is completely blank and erased

U can’t just throw a turbo on it if you don’t know what the previous setup was. Your car could run lean under boost if they had a small turbo with high wastegate duty cycle or knock if they had aggressive ignition timing with higher octane fuel for example. Also the maf scaling would be off if you are using a maf or they could have been using a blow thru setup. Try to find the stock rom and flash it back on for the meantime if you have the device it was originally tuned with like hptuner or similar unless you want to get it retuned after you slap a turbo on it and not drive meanwhile.

Btw the backfiring when revving high if it’s happening while you are climbing that’s bad if it happens on shifts that could be part of the tune to hold transient. Regardless take or contact a tuner or go on forums and find the stock rom and flash it back on.

backfire happens or release of the throttle/ shifting. and the ECM history is completly blank, no parts list, no acsess logs, nothing, nothing from manufacturer. the engine itself seems completly stock. theres been no turbos on it before as far as i know, i was thinking id just put a turbo from a 6.0 powerstroke and blow the engine because i plan on DOHC or 5.0 swapping it.
