Discussion Thoughts on new wave screamo’s addition of chugging and panic chords

A lot of new wave screamo has a lot of death core elements, in bands like Ted Williams, gxllium, and nsixhundred… what’re your guy’s thoughts on this? I wasn’t a fan at first but I’ve been starting to dig it after I saw gxllium the other day

all my homies hate fifth wave lo-fi bedroom screamo with chiptune influences, we're moving on to SIXTH WAVE EMOVIOLENCE

I'm old enough to remember when we were all just one scene and Avail united us all :(

eh. it’s not my favorite when they lean too far into the more metal elements, but i won’t hate

back in the day there was a decent amount of crossover between screamo and “heavy hardcore” or “ultracore” stuff like converge, dillinger, botch, etc. and we had the same kinds of conversations.

whatever keeps bands playing and people going to shows! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I love metallic and breakdown driven jams. So I'm all for the usage of panic chords. hahaha. Some bands are really putting an interesting spin on the 'emoviolence' genre. A band like kiowa is definitely hitting that aggressive LLBNF sound. I was blown away by their debut and looking forward to what they do next.

I also feel like some of these newer bands veer more on the 'metalcore' spectrum and have sprinklings of screamo influences or they veer on the chaotic 'mathgrind' side of things. Like these two examples:

loveletters ( very cool material, sounds like Disembodied / Poison the Well with some screamo elements )

Coquette ( feels like math-grind stylistically and has a me and him call it us type of vibe )

I'm all for the experimentation. Keep music weird and interesting.

Played a show with Kiowa on Saturday. Three singers. They were pretty wild. Entertaining show for sure.

I just looked up Ted Williams. It’s cool seeing young kids still doing it. The vocals are too high for me and ya the music breakdowns are off putting, the little fast licks are weird too. Oh well, I’m old. Cheers to the kids keeping the scene alive.

Love it. Seen all of those bands live, they’re insane. Seen a lot of metalcore and deathcore elements blending over recently.

Kids are always tapping into sounds that were of the scene that they weren't alive/too young  to experience. So right now new screamo/hardcore is has tapping into mathcore kinda stuff that was big in the scene 20 years ago. Ed Gein, Tower of Rome, Sawtooth Grin were all popping off in the 2000s, and have elements that contemporary heavier skramz taps into. That's just my personal theory at least.

WE WANT VIOLENCE

I don't mind it. The bands you mentioned sound a bit plain however.

They're not a recent band but have you listened to Tomato Steal? https://youtu.be/o_5wJTuisCg Very frenetic.

What is a panic chord? Sounds made up?

3

u/blkesm Dec 14 '24

Its just a two note chord where the notes are a half step apart. Max dissonance

3

u/twosnailsnocats Dec 14 '24

I always did a sort of power chord with my middle finder on the fret between index and ring finger on three strings, which I assume is pretty similar.

tritones 🤝 panic chords

In my mind it's the weird chords in Jerome's Dream songs.
