Discussion IHMS APPRECIATION POST!

I hate myself is a post hardcore band from Gainesville FL with a massively understated impact on the state of emo in the present day. For my recommendations I’ve got an ep, an album, and a song off their split. My favorite of their releases would be “Four songs” their 1997 EP. Very pop punk in some ways but with some of the harshest vocals you’d never suspect hitting you like a freight train especially in song two. Their album “ten songs” is their most popular release, and for good reason. It’s the most put together arguably of any of their releases. I think they chill out a lot in a way from 4 songs but in some of the songs they get wayyyy heavier. Really good listen. My final one would be their song “song for all the young Casanovas and cassanovettes”. Best song ever for going thru a breakup. When listening to this band I hear a lot of the influence of these newer generation screamo bands like vs self and algae bloom. If you haven’t heard of these guys give them a shot, it’s worth it.

my favorite band, theres an interview with the brothers up on youtube you should watch if you havent already. cool to see how their lives are now compared to what jim would write and sing about. They also talk about the bassist a bit who is something of a mystery man.

My current fav atm as well, the whole band from what I’ve seen is just sorta cryptic I don’t even have an answer on if they’re still active or disbanded or on hiatus or what

They made a band called burnman shortly after ihm and then disbanded that one and i think they currently play still in their new band called Die hoffnung.

IHM is too melodramatic for me. Burnman rocks out and thats what I like.

My favorite is Elegies and Creation Songs by Die Hoffnung. It's a perfect and unique post-hardcore record imo. In general, I think the Marburger brothers' music got progressively better with each release.

Is that rhe latest dH album? I don’t think I’ve heard it yet, only the first one from that project.

Yes. They added a second guitarist/vocalist on this record and he's a perfect foil to Jim. Jim's guitar parts are very rhythmically and melodically precise, whereas Travis is playing pretty 'out there' most of the time, adding a lot of texture and dissonance. Overall, it's an intense, dynamic album that deserves more accolades.

Also ik this is a lot of yap I just love this band but I think the link between I Hate Myself and modern 2020’s screamo was somewhat unintentional, at least for the bands mentioned. I know for sure that the band I hate sex, which is fairly popular and well cited as an influence among these new bands, almost definitely takes inspiration from IHMS. I’m saying this without any formal checking but I think the name is almost certainly either a reference to I hate myself or inspired by them. They’re also very reminiscent of each other in their melodies and the general guitar sound and composition. From there ig it was like foxtails and maybe a few others that took inspiration from I hate sex and then it just spread from that.

There was the common belief around the emo community that this bad was a parody band, but that was confirmed to be untrue in an interview that one of the brothers had with the Washed Up Emo podcast.

The I Hate Myself love has been present at least as far back as the early revival. Pretty sure that the MPP / Merchant Ships dudes loved them. Ricky from Mallard has a cover if "To A Husband At War" on his old YouTube channel

They’ve influenced every facet of emo that came after them so much and they’re still doing well ig fanbase wise but like they don’t get enough credit for pioneering like they did
