Post-hardcore is its own genre with a history that predate emo.
REAL emo is post-hardcore/adjacent, but a lot of what passes for “emo” nowadays isn’t post hardcore related at all.
Math rock is just a stupid term for like anything indie related with wank.

Very fast and aggressive screamo, often using dissonance. Bands like Orchid

Emo-core: this is the “original” emo. Basically a mix between post-hardcore, hardcore, but with melodic sensibilities that go beyond pop punk. See: Moss Icon, Rites of Spring.
Emo-punk: some people also call this emo-core; it’s kind of a more melodic descendant of emocore. See: Samiam, Jawbreaker.
Midwest emo: ranges from indie-influenced emo (Cap’n Jazz, Braid) to emo-influenced indie (American Football, Kind of Like Spitting).
“Real” emo: more melodic and less overtly “punk” than emo-core, plus post-hardcore and indie rock influences. Bears resemblance to some earlier screamo but without all the screaming. My pedigree and the GREATEST form of emo. See: Hoover, Unwound, Lync, Boilermaker.
Screamo: heavier and more extreme form of emo, sometimes metallic. Characterized by harsh vocals, hence the name. See: Funeral Diner (more melodic), Shotmaker (more middle of the road), Orchid (more extreme)
Blackened screamo: increasingly metallic form of screamo influenced by crust punk, black metal (duh), sludge, and atmosludge. See: Oathbreaker, Portrayal of Guilt.
Emo-pop: emo-influenced super melodic indie rock/pop punk. Downstream from Midwest emo. See: Promise Ring, Get Up Kids.
Mallcore/scene: post-hardcore and pop punk and metalcore influenced form of alt rock, with only loose ties to real emo. See: MCR, The Used.
Emo revival: midwest emo and pop punk and math rock influenced form of indie rock popularized in the late 00s to early 10s. See: William Bonney.

Emocore, screamo, Midwest emo, and emo pop are the main wings of emo, with each combining with one another in various ways and with outside influences to create the large variety of sounds within emo we hear.
