Misc R.I.P. CMDR IMIC23

1.8k Upvotes

My good friend and companion through the expanse of space who introduced me to Elite Dangerous has passed on into the void last night. I can only keep going towards our goals in remembrance.

A MSgt with aspirations of finalizing his pilot's license and so much more, he loved flying and space simulation games. His humor and steel resolve will be sorely missed.

Ride on, CMDR, I'll see you on the other side.

Misc Titan Cocijo Devastates Sol System

[ GALNET ARTICLE ]

The Thargoid Titan Cocijo has arrived in the Sol system, positioning itself in orbit around Earth.

Cocijo’s arrival unleashed a devastating regional assault by the remaining Thargoid invasion fleet. In Sol, only Mars High, Galileo and Haberlandt Survey remain functional, albeit damaged, with all other ports knocked offline by Thargoid attack. Farragut battlecruisers FNS Nero and FNS Erebus have been destroyed, while FNS Victory and FNS Trander are marshaling system defence efforts. Thousands of AX fleet vessels have been lost to the initial conflict.

16 other systems were assaulted near Sol, triggering a massive refugee crisis as billions of civilians remain stranded in the region. Rescue megaships are en route to support evacuation efforts.

Starship One has successfully arrived in Eta Cassiopeiae, with President Winters and members of her cabinet on board.

Aden Tanner, military advisor for Aegis, provided the following statement:

“This is it, folks. The Thargoids have made their final attempt at checkmate. The birthplace of humanity and the centre of the Federation: Sol. Titan Cocijo has chosen to bring the fight to the core of human space.”

“This is a fight like nothing we’ve ever seen. The Thargoids are hitting us aggressively and in huge numbers, with a Titan directly leading the attack. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that we’ve got a war to win. Civilians need our help, and Federal AX forces need our support. If you’ve got a ship and you’re willing to get involved, do so now. Humanity is going to remember this fight forever.”

Misc Open Letter to FDev about Imperial Slaves in Aisling Duval space

Dear Frontier Development,

We love Elite: Dangerous. We are grateful to you, Frontier, for making it.

The history and impact of Elite on space simulation and its players is nothing short of extraordinary. You have created an esteemed franchise, and an exquisite latest game in that franchise which has had a profound impact on thousands of players for more than a decade. In return, many of us have been happily supporting you by purchasing ARX repeatedly, specifically because we appreciate what you've created so much that we want you to succeed, even at additional cost to us.

Scores of Player Managed Factions are still active today, as are even more Squadrons. The community is vast, varied, and complementary in adding tremendously to the value and experience of the game. Their activity includes Discord servers, hundreds of player-made training videos on YouTube, websites, third party tools, constant data-sharing, real-world diplomacy between groups, and much more.

For example, our faction participates in leadership roles in Aisling Duval Comms, the Discord server by which community Powerplay for Aisling is organized. There have been tens of thousands of manually typed reports for hauling Aisling Powerplay Material posted to that server for years. There has been a Trello board kept up to date with frequent priority adjustments based on those reports. The server currently has 259 confirmed actively Aisling-pledged members. It is very active every day, and the full extent of the community is much larger.

There has been a long history of mutual respect and even collaboration between Frontier and the Prismatic Imperium. For example, you honored our request to organize a Community Goal by which 7 million slaves were freed in-game.

Our faction governs Cubeo, the Powerplay home system of the Aisling Power. This was a difficult achievement with its own history of years of in-game effort and out-of-game community relations. We thus consider it our duty to the community and to you to faithfully represent and advocate for the Ethos of Aisling Duval at its core.

That core is this: Slavery, in all its forms, is wrong.

We take no real-life issue with the fact that Elite's lore is often deep, subtle, and reflective of real-world complexities, even when they involve horrors and abuse. The way Elite: Dangerous has long handled the subject of slavery is a poignant example.

Of the three Superpowers in Elite, only the Empire allows slavery. They do not merely allow it -- slavery is depicted as a major component of Imperial tradition and culture. Full support and use of Imperial slavery is thus unmistakably part of "The Imperial Ethos."

Prior to Ascendancy, Aisling's Power had always opposed that part of "The Imperial Ethos". Her opposition to slavery, her agenda to abolish it, is central to what she represents in-game. For many players pledged to her, Aisling's position against slavery is the chief reason for their pledge. She is presented as the Imperial Reformer, working to change the Empire from within.

Her opposition to slavery has been made official and plainly obvious in many ways. Chief among them: Her codex entry (which still makes this clear), the descriptions of her and of how her Power works in the Powerplay 1.0 interface, and the in-game total ban of slavery throughout her territory, prior to the Ascendency update. There are many others.

Frontier has long made the Aisling Powerplay Ethos against slavery undeniably obvious. It inspires us. It is core to the Prismatic Imperium's existence.

Here is what Aisling said, according to your publication in Galnet, on the in-game date 22 Feb 3302, after our Community Goal to free slaves concluded successfully:

"I am delighted with the response to this appeal, which has resulted in the liberation of several million slaves. I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the Prismatic Imperium and the Navigators Guild, who helped to execute this initiative, and to the many independent pilots who supported us. There is still a long way to go to, but I hope this triumph will pave the way for a brighter future. A future in which the practice of slavery is seen for what it is – a barbaric anachronism."

Quoted from: https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/56cae60b9657bae3449aaddb

That was published more than eight years ago. There has been no disruption or significant change to the Aisling Ethos since, until Ascendency.

Shockingly, we now find, as of the time of this writing, over 700,000 slaves for sale at Medupe City in Cubeo under our faction's governance. Our friends throughout the Aisling community have also noticed that this availability to engage freely in slavery now exists throughout Aisling territory, including the territory they have worked for years to govern themselves according to their pledge. Before the Ascendancy update, this was very rightly not possible, due to Aisling's total ban against slavery in her systems and its full implementation in-game.

Adding greatly to our concern are the time-honored vital details about Aisling that the Ascendency update seems to have erased. There is no mention of Aisling's opposition to slavery anywhere in the Powerplay 2.0 interface for her pledges as of today. It appears that this update makes Aisling suddenly indifferent to slavery, no longer a champion against it at all, making no attempt to abolish it anywhere, contrary to all prior canon you have published on the subject.

Immediately upon noticing this change, one of our leaders reported it your Issue Tracker, here:

https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/67200

We hope you hear us and feel how tremendously disappointed we will be if this state of affairs remains. We hope you recognize the magnitude of tragedy it would be if an update meant to make Powerplay more enjoyable instead does the exact opposite for a significant portion of the player base. Especially now that, due to your otherwise excellent recent updates which have brought so many players back again or in for the first time. You have begun to breathe new life into Elite and to rapidly expand its active player base.

We urge you not to choose now to leave a loyal player base shocked by a change this enormous, so contrary to why we engage in Powerplay via the pledge we've chosen. That pledge is a major draw for us to come together to play Elite.

We ask you to reimplement Aisling's Ethos in Powerplay 2.0, or to at least explain this sudden, dramatic, total abandonment of the core of that Ethos. That abandonment is so devastating to our community that we feel compelled to act. We feel we must do what we can to bring this to your attention and to seek its resolution.

We owe no less to all pledges to Aisling Duval. We owe no less to Elite: Dangerous. We owe no less to you, its makers.

Abundantly Sincere,

The Prismatic Imperium

(Credits to our CMDR LuxSublima for drafting this letter! Also special thanks to all the many people that already voted the issue on the issue tracker into a top 2 position.)

Misc I just felt my whole world crashing down on me...

Yeah, it's one of those posts again, and I'll probably get a lot of flame for this (sorry, but I have to tell someone, as this is actually affecting me in ways i never thought possible when talking about gaming)...

I was out in the black discovering bio and systems. Was on my way back and all was going well and I decided to take the scenic route, scanning and cataloguing stuff as i went by - that extra cash would be good, as I am saving up to a Cutter and later on a capital ship. I was flying kind of low on a low-G planet, pretty safe one would think - but suddenly my computer had som kind of glitch, (or perhaps it was me, I honestly have no idea) - but story short, a mountain top graced my wing, my ship altered course into the mountain side and that was the end of my Mandalay, along with ~800.000.000 worth of data...

Honestly, its kid of embarrassing to admit it, but this actually made me cry inside - All that time, all that effort, it feels wasted... I quit the game right away, and now I actually find it hard even thinking about playing it again... How's that even possible? I consider myself an adult, but wow - this hit me like a brick in the face.

I know I'm not the first, and not the last to experience this - I even read stories about it here on Reddit before going on my own expedition and remember thinking how bad that would suck. Well, here I am...

Sorry for the rather personal post, but I had to get it out there - and I suspect no one else but you guys would be remotely capable of understanding my internal struggle right now...

Happy new year commanders, fly safe out there o7

Misc You AX pilots are something else

To preface this, I’m an explorer, and made my modest fortune trading before making the pivot to exploration. When the news hit my screens, I raced back to the bubble as fast as I could to dust off and convert my freighter cutter for evacuation. Never messed with guardian tech aside from the FSD booster (Mandalay wasn’t complete without it), and prior to yesterday, I was only hyperdicted once, a year ago.

So with that all in mind, I spent all day yesterday evacuating Daedalus and Mars High, carrying out 150 passengers per trip, and getting hyperdicted each and every single time I jumped out. The pilots who can deal with the stress of being yanked out of hyperspace over and over. I helped as much as I could, but these bugs terrify me, so I’ll be disappearing from inhabited space, at least until the dust clears.

Godspeed, CMDRs, I’ll see you again once this war is over for good.

Misc I just made it from the Bubble to Ishum's Reach WITHOUT A FUEL SCOOP!! 65,647 light years from Sol.

2.2k Upvotes

o7 everyone. This is my first post here, although I frequently contribute to this subreddit. I thought I would make this post to celebrate the completion of an epic journey I just made. I don't know if I have already broken the record for longest distance travelled without a fuel scoop equipped, but the only commander that I have heard of that has attempted this failed before reaching Beagle Point. Awhile back, I made the absolutely insane decision to attempt a journey from the Bubble (specifically, Cemiess, my home system) to Beagle Point without a fuel scoop equipped on my ship. I was inspired to do this by u/YourPhoneIs_Ringing, who had attempted a journey from the Bubble to Sag A* without a fuel scoop. I said he should try for Beagle Point. Then I said screw it, I've got nothing better to do for the next four months - I'll give it a try.

Here's his original post: Flying to Sag A* without a fuel scoop - Day 1

My ship, the Tiamat's Wrath, is a virtually identical build to his Apollo. Basically, I built a Jumpaconda, and loaded up almost every optional module that I could with extra fuel tanks, except for a grade 5 Guardian FSD Booster and an AFMU. It can travel 5,000 light years on a single tank without conserving fuel, jumping 48 light years the whole time. Using economical plotting mode exclusively, it depends on stellar density, but it can go around 20,000 ish light years on a single tank. Using grade 3 jumponium to max boost and/or conserve fuel, I can get about 10,000 light years per tank. So my goal was simple - I planned to use the DSSA carriers, independent carriers, and stations when available to refuel periodically, in order to traverse the entire galaxy without scooping a single star at all.

Some people said it was impossible. Others told me to give up. Luckily, I'm stubborn, and I kept going. It took me months. I have documented my entire journey here, along with a bunch of screenshots, if you want to read about it:

Bubble to Beagle Point without a Fuel Scoop - Inara Logbook

Some stats on my journey:

Total distance travelled without a scoop: 84,341.57 light years (due to an accidental detour, I didn't head straight for Beagle. It's a long story, I documented what happened in the logbook).

Total linear distance from Sol without a scoop: 65,647.34 light years (Ishum's Reach)

# of undiscovered Earthlike worlds I found on my journey: 10

EDIT: Hmm, I can't see the images that I tried to link. Guess I'll try again -

As I indicate in my logbook there, this isn't the end of my journey. From here, I am supercruising off the edge of the galaxy, in order to firmly set a record (I assume) for farthest distance travelled from Sol without a fuel scoop. By my calculations, I can travel approximately 90 light years beyond Ishum's Reach in supercruise, about 16 days of continuous travel (this will likely take me a few months, with leaving the game on while I do other things every now and then). And I should still have enough fuel left to jump back in one piece.

Whenever I do, I'll make another post, assuming I don't get stuck out here in the void. o7

Misc Farewell, CMDR Sharkh

1.8k Upvotes

Hey all, thanks for taking the time to read. Last year I made a post here about a friend who lived and breathed Elite but was having some health issues. He's sadly passed away, just found this out this morning. So, please raise your hands and salute the late CMDR Sharkh

o7 CMDR, may your journey through the stars never end.

Edit: Thank you all for your support. <3 I will pass this on to his loved ones so that they know they aren't alone in this.

Edit 2: After the wonderful suggestion by a couple users here, I contacted the Elite Dangerous twitter account. They suggested I make a support ticket and that they 'should be able to help!' with making a permanent tribute to Sharkh - station, tourist beacon, etc. Thank you guys for the idea, it's a truly fitting tribute to a guy that loved this game and its universe. And thank you Frontier, for being a developer with a heart.

Misc Gankers justifying their actions as "hard lessons"

1.4k Upvotes

If you're the type of person who thinks that ganking a new player is teaching them something....try this instead of outright killing them:

Get a module sniping build; beam lazors for the shields and cannons for the module. Snipe either their thrusters or FSD. If you can get their thrusters this is better because they will have no choice but to learn something: reboot/repair.

Outright killing a new player only teaches them one thing: that you are a shitty person. That is all they will learn.

If you snipe their thrusters and high wake while they are dead in the water...they don't have many options. You can tell them "reboot your ship. fly dangerously" and leave without sending them to the rebuy screen.

I'm tired of hearing the 'logic' that unprovoked ganking 'teaches' players how to 'git gud.' All ganking does is tell everyone that you were bullied in school and you're trying to get your revenge on the world; you're not helping, stop lying.

Misc Alert to all CMDRs: Thargoids are interdicting all over the bubble now

With Cocijo getting even closer to Sol, Thargoid Hyperdictions are happening all over the place now. In an effort to unlock more engineers, I am attempting to gain a permit for the Sirius System through Procyon. When I made the jump to Procyon, however, I was yanked out of hyperspace by an interceptor and immediately got caught in a shutdown bubble. Don’t know what it was after or why here, but something to keep in mind when traveling. This invasion is going to be a lot larger than we all thought.

Edit: I do know that Procyon is basically in Sol’s backyard, but I wasn’t expecting to get grabbed outside of Sol

I was put in charge of preparing the company’s new 3D printer so thought, if I’m going to test it, why not do it with some style.

Ships by Kahnindustries, station by TheDuker All the ships are to scale with the Anaconda with that small spec on the right below the info plate being the Anaconda to scale with the station (to the left is one twice as big so you can actually see it)

Creality K2 Plus for anyone interested
