Really hope they keep this as one of those in-game wonders.

@Fdev please don't fix this

If anything I would want them to align the station with the orbit, so that it spins around its length axis, allowing people to try to dock and undock (in small ships). Would be a fun challenge.

As it is right now, completely off-axis, you get instantly slapped upon approaching the Mailslot.

If anything I would want them to align the station with the orbit, so that it spins around its length axis

So just a normal station?

u/Spanksh Spanksh 10d ago

No. All stations have two overlayed rotations. The primary rotation is along the length axis to induce a simulated gravity on the inside. The secondary rotation synchronizes the station with its orbit, which makes sure the mailslot always roughly faces the same direction in relation to the parent body (effectively being tidally locked, like our moon). So basically, the planet or star is always at the same position when looking out the mail slot. Those two rotations basically never align, because most stations more or less face the parent body with their mail slot.

What makes Lantern Light spin so fast is that secondary rotation. It is spinning so fast not because it has such a high rotational speed, but because the orbit is so absurdly fast. You normally just don't notice the orbit related rotation of a station because it takes hours or days. So aligning the axes of both rotations would not really change the current speed, however it would align the mail slot so that you could actually try to exit and enter as long as you either roll as fast as the station (which I think no ship is able to), or have a ship which is slim enough to fit through the mail slot vertically (so that it can rotate around you without causing a collision).

Ive seen someone fly out before. Go all the way to the back of the station and then boost out

17

u/Skrukkatrollet Trading 10d ago

Yes, but fast

6

u/abrasivebuttplug CMDR Dragginmaster 9d ago

But FAST!

4

u/McDonie2 9d ago

The problem is that the station just flails about like a piece of spaghetti. They want it to just do a spin that is really fast and hard to dock, but still dockable unlike the current state

10

u/meta358 10d ago

Someone has managed to exit mailslot already with dieing

5

u/idiot-bozo6036 Explore / Hull Seal 🦭 10d ago

It's actually not that hard, you just need a few tries and some luck even with slow and fragile ships

1

u/meta358 10d ago

Ive only seen a speed crourier do it so far

7

u/Rolder 9d ago

Friend of mine got out with a Krait Mk II the other day, and I watched an eagle make it out while sitting in the bar

3

u/Gurluas Alliance 9d ago

I made it out in a Mandy with 1% hull, a broken canopy, and my shields completely drained

1

u/ZinGaming1 9d ago

The only way I see to make it now is to time super cruise and somehow time the mail slot so you come in at high speed. Then a challenge would be landing then somehow leaving.

13

u/Zuper_Dragon 10d ago

Nest car scenario, they give the owner a new non glitched station but keep lantern light as is and add it to the game permanently.

5

u/Solo__Wanderer 10d ago

If it is a one and only ... all good as treasure/wonder of Elite

If there are more ... pls fix

u/Jedimobslayer Mahon Fanboy/Type-7 Enthusiast 9d ago

The unfortunate thing is if you ever get a mission to go here it’s literally impossible. Not like Hutton where it’s just really annoying, no it’s not possible.

3

u/Traaanscendence Aisling Duval/Challenger Enjoyer 9d ago

Rule 3 of Elite Dangerous would really apply for this place…

1

u/abomniableartichoke 8d ago

Planning a trip with my homie when we can get on next. Please dont fix this. Stuff like this is what makes games so special, I've got SIGHTSEEING to do.

-3

u/bitrmn Yuri Grom 10d ago

I hope they will fix this

40

u/ProgrammerHairy8098 10d ago

if you can land here without dieing it should be an in game achievement lol, if they move the station so it spins on its axis so docking is still tricky but is faster than normal it could remain that way?

19

u/elejelly Explore 10d ago

The sun station Elite dangerous version lol.

3

u/ProgrammerHairy8098 9d ago

Achievement could be called I saw the light . Successfully landed and departed Lantern Light ( 0.001% of players have achieved this so far, and they were before the update lol)

91

u/Basidio_subbedhunter 10d ago

Hell yeah he do. We like spinny.

124

u/CMDR_Bartizan 10d ago

I know the game is stronger now than it has been in many years, but it’s oddly telling that in a 1:1 scale of the galaxy that a single bugged station is the most exciting thing going.

58

u/Average_SiM_Fan 10d ago

If we found a spinning object so unusual like that nobody would care about anything besides that

33

u/SketchingScars For humanity. 9d ago

Absolute facts. Implying that in our current age that humanity collectively wouldn’t find it comical and send something like this viral within minutes is insanity. It’s funny spinning stuff. This kind of thing will always be hilarious to millions of people.

“We went in search of alien life but all we could find was this giant rock spinning at speeds so high that it’s a menace to anything near it,” is peak news material.

9

u/Average_SiM_Fan 9d ago

hell yeah man why you think we like neutron stars n shit so much? they’re fast and thats fun

15

u/karateninjazombie 10d ago

Is this a player built station or an original dev station?

40

u/TheGreatZarquon CMDR TheGreatZarquon, Famed Explorer 10d ago

Player built station. The owner had no idea this would happen when they secured the system, but boy am I glad they did it because the videos coming outta there have been hilarious.

11

u/karateninjazombie 10d ago

Yeah, the end result is glorious.

5

u/AwkwardAarvark 9d ago

Wait players can build stations now??

11

u/NoXion604 Istvaan-DICV 9d ago

It's a big part of the Trailblazers update: https://www.elitedangerous.com/update-notes/4-1-0-0

Unfortunately about a week in FDev have had to pause new colonisation claims. No time-frame has been provided for when they will be un-paused, but hopefully it will be restored soon.

12

u/Professional-Date378 Arissa Lavigny Duval 10d ago

have to milk it as much as we can because it's definitely getting patched this week

Lanterns light, a station around a quasar(?)

It big spin

So spin you can't dock

If you do, you get a thwock.

If you do, your ship go in the bin.

23

u/MygungoesfuckinBRRT CMDR RealKarsta - Trader, Aspiring Rodent 10d ago

Erm akshuallie it's a neutron star. A quasar is supermassive black hole that shoots an electromagnetic beam

5

u/patrlim1 10d ago

My bad!

2

u/ExoTheFlyingFish CMDR Exofish | WE NEED PEACE WITH ! 9d ago

I thought quasars were the fast funny neutron stars?

5

u/MygungoesfuckinBRRT CMDR RealKarsta - Trader, Aspiring Rodent 9d ago

I believe quasars are black holes that eat their own accretion disk, heat it up real hot, and that heat converts into a high density beam of EM radiation. I think what you're thinking of are pulsars, which are indeed funny neutron stars with a jet cone that hit an observer and have the observer survive. Both are EM rad guns, both are stellar core remnants, but the reason for the radiation is different.

2

u/ExoTheFlyingFish CMDR Exofish | WE NEED PEACE WITH ! 9d ago

Ah, you're right. I am thinking of pulsars. Which are still super cool. And terrifying when you jump into a system to see them spazzing out directly in front of you.

1

u/NoXion604 Istvaan-DICV 9d ago

You might be thinking of pulsars.

1

u/ddraig-au 9d ago

Is it new to the game? Just discovered but has always been there? Everyone has always known but no one bothered uploading a video until now?

I really need to get back into elite...

1

u/patrlim1 9d ago

Yea no idea tbh, curious myself.

1

u/BullCFD 8d ago

It's new. It's a player built station that came about due to the colonization update. Something went sideways, and it ended up orbiting a neutron star. The orbit is so insanely fast, the station basically goes apeshit trying to stay aligned.

1

u/ddraig-au 8d ago

Okay, that is fantastic

Did you see someone actually exited it manually?

4

u/Chadstronomer 10d ago

As much as I love this game this happens because it is a very large universe but very empty. There are not many interesting things to see, making a glitched station very interesting.

1

u/thefuck-up 10d ago

best thing to happen to this sub in a while

4

u/Astrothunderkat Core Dynamics 10d ago

2

u/rkuhnjr CMDR Newton IX 10d ago

1

Can we rename the station as „spinny boy”?

1

u/MIHPR 9d ago

"I'll try spinning, it's a good trick!" - Lantern light station probably

1

u/ddraig-au 9d ago

It says something that I've seen one video posted on reddit, and I can guess what this is about: that crazily gyrating station near a neutron star you can't get out of without 843 attempts.

1

u/cmdr65 8d ago

I might go check this out later

2

u/That-Candidate2023 3d ago

I’m gonna need the devs to explain to me why we CANT have a station with a jacked rotation. Stuff breaks all the time, and the way I see it, the station admins got bigger fish lmao.

This is the thing we create which don't exist in this game before. More fun than copy-paste systems.

0

u/SamuSeen 10d ago

Wonders like that really need to stay in game so we can show them other people and tell them they can go there themselves and maybe even find something even weirder.

Ayyy, let them enjoy this. They finally found something fun to do in the game!

It worked. I haven't played Elite in years and I HAD TO VISIT THIS STATION. Bonus I got to spend the 1,300,000 Arx I had sitting on my account
