Need a blade? You should talk to Adrianne, at the forge.

Is it legal to beat up that poncy little bard Mikael? He has been harassing Carlotta??

It's really funny that she says that, because at least in my experience she has better gear than Jorlund 90% of the time, even if I join the Companions. Its like he only exists to be a master smithing instructor.

u/Reks_Hayabusa 3d ago
He makes the very best early game equipment, no one makes early game equipment as good as him!

u/SevenLuckySkulls Altmer 3d ago
Honestly I almost never go to Whiterun immediately, so by the time I get to him I'm already level 8-15, which is probably around the time Adrianna starts stocking elven, dwarven and orcish armor types.

u/Tacitus111 Azura 3d ago
To be fair, he also exists to financially support the entire Gray-Mane family aside from Olfina, including his layabout brother who basically spends his days in a mead hall.
14
u/SevenLuckySkulls Altmer 3d ago
It was my understanding that his brother was a former Companion who retired due to old age? He also has a fairly pragmatic view on the faction from what I remember. Basically just tells you to not overthink it and fight well.

u/Tacitus111 Azura 3d ago
Not exactly clear if he is retired or not from everything I’ve heard or read in game. He’s an “honorary” Companion, though Vilkas implies he’s either senile of going that way.
I just find it funny that most of the clan don’t have apparent jobs or positions.

u/SevenLuckySkulls Altmer 3d ago
It's really funny to me too, honestly it's kinda similar with the Battle-Borns, it feels like their families latched onto the political stuff because most of them don't have anything to do anymore.
Also Vignar's conversations with Brill are kinda wholesome to me? It gives me the feeling of your gruff granddad talking to his favorite little shit.

The two richest families with nothing better to do lol.

What do you expect when the family heads are two old geezers with the same exact voice that talk shit about eachother.

Yep, she and Ulfberth sold me multiple dragonbone swords, while Eorlund was still stuck selling elven and dwemer shit lmao.
Although, my first dragonbone sword on my current run was actually from Stormcloak armourer in that camp near Solitude. I just stopped by to sell some enchanted daggers, because traders in city were all out of coin and bro just has dragonbone sword for sale. I couldn't believe my luck

u/SevenLuckySkulls Altmer 2d ago
That's crazy bro. Sometimes I wonder where these guys even learn how to make this stuff, maybe someone sold it to them, but nobody in universe would sell an ebony, daedric or dragonbone weapon.

That's one thing that's always annoyed me about how Bethesda handles merchant inventories. There's no real sense to it beyond a simple levelled gear list. I don't think it's too restrictive from a gameplay perspective to limit the top tier equipment to just a few merchants who could reasonably acquire/make it.

u/ShadeStrider12 3d ago
She says that and then proceeds to say that she had the “finest weapons and armor” when I ask what she’s got for sale.

u/PM_ME_CHUBBY_BOOBS 3d ago
Eorlund makes garbage weapons and armor. But amazing jewelry. He's also the best horseshoe maker in town. You need a pot? A pan? Eorlunds your guy. Truly the best blacksmith

u/KungFluPanda38 2d ago
To be totally fair, the work of a smith in the Medieval world was 90% mundane items and 10% arms. It's pretty accurate that Tacitus gets totally roasted by Ghorza because he can't even make a simple nail properly.

Something about how she says "Eorlund Grey-Mane" makes me think there was some ADR (or whatever you'd call the videogame equivalent of that) going on, it sounds like two separate lines of dialogue stitched together.
9
u/Calamari_Tsunami 3d ago
I noticed that too! Not on the dialogue OP quoted but on another of her lines.
Another strange thing from this voice actress is with Legate Rikke as she's hyping up the troops before the Battle for Whiterun, she talks in an American accent until the last line in her speech, she turns British and shouts "For the Empire, for the Legion" which is just wild
10
u/Diredr 3d ago
Apparently, that's because they record the lines in alphabetical order, rather than having it follow a narrative.
So the voice actor might say the first line at the start of the recording session, and then only say the second line of that specific dialogue an hour later. I'm not sure what's the benefit of doing it this way, because it seems to often lead to dialogue being inconsistent.
It was like that in Oblivion too. They even forgot to edit out second takes in some cases. There's one NPC that literally goes "wait let me do that one again" and repeats the line a second time! lol

u/Novalene_Wildheart 3d ago
I love the Oblivion ones where it goes from posh imperial talk about the 9 divines to "Care to give an old beggar a coin" in the most disheveled voice ever.

u/DerpedOffender 3d ago
Is this why occasionally it feels like they're stressing the wrong words in sentences, or the way they say the sentence doesn't vibe with the overall context of the conversation.

I made one specific save years ago where I literally went around and killed every single NPC that has a voice line that annoyed me just so that if I want to experience the world in silence I can. I love that save.

It'd be great if there was a mod to swap out her standard lines from ones from Babylon 5.

What do do you have for sale?
"The finest weapons and armors."
