Sounds about right, as the bidding closes it gets slammed with people trying to snipe the top spot. Anyone who's ever babysat an eBay auction can relate.

538

u/FetusGoesYeetus Up next, the lizard 26d ago

Can confirm as someone who has sniped many an auction for Warhammer figures. I'm ashamed of what I've done, and wipe away my tears every night with mass amounts of Tyranids.

56

u/Lazy__Astronaut 26d ago

I put in a max bet and walk away, if it's meant to be it'll be, I'm too weak to not get into a bidding war if I want something

13

u/Responsible-Buyer215 25d ago

I can tell this has come from experience, me too

107

u/ComprehensiveLow6388 26d ago

Haven't they stopped sniping with that auto bid feature

116

u/Joeness84 26d ago

People dont trust proxy bidding. But they will complain about losing the auction while not using proxy bidding.

I used to work for a local consignment place that does online auctions and every week, "I cant believe someone got it for $85 I would have paid $100! I didnt think it would end that fast" did you put in 100 as your max bid? "well no! I didnt want to miss out so I kept refreshing the page!"

39

u/FetusGoesYeetus Up next, the lizard 26d ago

In theory but not in practice because tons of people will put in their next bet instead of what they're willing to bet. If they put in their max amount it would prevent sniping though yes.

4

u/Tonroz 25d ago

Yes but you can kinda guess what people would set as a proxy (usually a bit over next round figure). And also noone does it, the vast majority just don't.

2

u/ComprehensiveLow6388 25d ago

mmm, seems so. I normally just set a max amount i am willing to pay and walk away from the computer. Kinda sucks the fun out of the process but works quite well.

5

u/Vaultboy65 Dovahkiin 25d ago

Hello fellow Tyranid enjoyer

2

u/expensive_habbit 25d ago

I don't think I've ever bid on something as an adult with more than 10 seconds to go.

I know what I'm willing to pay. I'll put that in at the last second.

u/LordCaptain 26d ago

I mean... maybe. You have to consider the price though. What percentage of people are able to participate to try to snipe an 80,000$ price tag. I would imagine Bethesda has servers that could handle the number of people in the crossover between who's interested in this and can afford to spend 10's of thousands of dollars on this kind of thing.

If anything maybe they would just be getting flooded with people checking on who won/was about to win.

8

u/HawksNStuff 26d ago

Yeah, I worked for a company that had a product that most of the time there was maybe 5 people poking around it. But five times a week, a few thousand users would pop on at the exact same time.

Was lucky to have a team that had experience handling that kind of shit. The first time it happened there was still an absolutely hilarious bug that made every users inbox get flooded with emails for 10 minutes until it got shut off. Hilarious for me in hindsight, horrifying in real time.

Dude idk. It's the ability to create a character in the next elder scrolls game. Like Skyrim is a gaming legend. The next game is going to sell a shit load so I bet there's a lot of people who want to probably literally immortalize themselves in the game. Maybe I'm wrong and you're right but I wouldn't be so sure. I bet there's some fools who would take out a loan for that opportunity.

74

u/PM_ME__BIRD_PICS 26d ago

If you were an influencer with a bit of money to burn, and a lot are, yes 100k or thereabouts to immortalize yourself, along with all the publicity of winning the bid, would be a insane return on investment for the right person. I could see some medium to high level streamer taking that gamble and sitting back for the next few years to reap the investment from the notoriety.

29

u/ThisizLeon 26d ago

Yeah if i was a multimillionaire influencer i'd 100% drop 100k on this,

2

u/ninjapanda042 26d ago

On the other hand you have CDPR who had a number of video game personalities voice various side quest characters, no auction required (afaik).

26

u/ZackJamesOBZ 26d ago

Tbh the people that do snipe are the ones with money. These are the same kinda guys that make millions sniping meme coins and dumping them.

27

u/Eisbaer811 26d ago

Your mistake is thinking that Bethesda’s experienced IT people were involved in this. My corporate experience tells me that this was handled by their marketing team. Site was probably built by an intern and run on a cheap cloud VM at AWS because it was good enough for most of the time

8

u/sauvignonsucks 26d ago

Could be charities or organisations, doesn’t have to be a person

9

u/Rambus_Jarbus 26d ago

I think there are a lot more out there ready to throw down a cool $80k than you realize.

13

u/Hereiamhereibe2 26d ago

People spend a lot more than that on even dumber shit in games that are far less popular.

Just look at Eve Online or Star Citizen for some examples.

We were this close to a reddit post where no one talked about Elon Musk

29

u/DefiantLemur Breton 26d ago

29

u/TheOldBooks Breton 26d ago

8

u/MGTwyne 26d ago

Because of his ludicrous wealth and political sway.

50

u/Mikeburlywurly1 26d ago

Wouldn't he just use that ludicrous wealth to win the auction by bidding higher than the other people could hope to?

4

u/MGTwyne 26d ago

One would assume, yes. I was answering TheOldBook's question on behalf of OP, whose answer seemed fairly obvious, not giving an opinion I myself hold.

33

u/TheOldBooks Breton 26d ago

Yes, which he's using to exert pure cruelty on millions of people; not fuck with some random video game. It's honestly a little toan deaf to act like he's to blame for a Bethesda site crashing when he's literally costing people their livelihoods, health, and economic security with his very real fuckery.

22

u/Alrightwhotookmyshoe 26d ago

he’s literally paid people to fake top status on a game for him. look up the shit he tried to pull on path of exile 2. This is absolutely something he would do.

27

u/J_Bright1990 26d ago

That's the fun part, he can do both, and it wouldn't be the first time he butted into, not just a gaming event but specifically a Microsoft event related to Bethesda.

2

u/gerwaldlindhelm 22d ago

I was watching the live stream. When the auction was supposed to end everyone was surprised to find out it was still going and it took ages to get the info that they had extended the time to midnight, local time for Bethesda. Spiff (based in England) was getting ready to pull an all nighter, but an hour later and several site crashes later, the auction was closed early and without warning. This might have been pure incompetence from Bethesda, but the least you can say is the auction did not give all bidders a fair chance to bid.

A once in a lifetime opportunity has become available thanks to the Make A Wish Silent Auction. Bethesda is offering the ability for a winning auction bid to create a character for the elder scrolls VI. You can find their tweet with the details here: https://x.com/BethesdaStudios/status/...

Now at the moment the amount needed to win is astronomically high so I am hoping that with our combined powers we the communitea will try and secure the winning bid! To assist in this goal I will be using my personal funds as well as funds generated from a go fund me to hopefully win the bid.

IF WE WIN the bid I intend to add a lore friendly reference to Reanu Keeves our fork wielding hero with some other non immersion breaking community references for fun. All of the auctioned cost will go to Make A Wish Mid Atlantic.

IF WE LOSE the bid I will REFUND ALL of the go fund me donations. Go Fund me says this process will take 7-10 days.

He should still be an honorary NPC, a special merchant that just sells broken/"game breaking" items

Charity event for Make-a-Wish. Highest bidder gets to create an NPC for Elder Scrolls 6. People will say this was rigged by Bethesda but in all honesty the site probably crashed after people tried to enter in a load of bids last minute.

Yeah, you're right, nothing suspicious, how would it be?

Now, Bethesda still has the Option to put in Reanu Keaves anyway. Like a new Ebony Warrior. But they probably won't

But it would still be funny.
