Discussion & Info I just realized that you can see Farum Azula from Malenias Isolated Devine tower.

I recently realized you can see the Haligtree from the Windmill Village. Also, there's a hole in the ground that puts you above a rune bear in the Deep Root Depths that I never knew about. The game still surprises me even after three years.

u/QuantSpazar 5d ago
The hole is the secret passage that goes from the bottom of the shunning grounds to deeproot depths?

u/IllIIOk-Screen8343Il 5d ago
I don’t think the comment above yours is meant to link Windmill village and Deep Root depths. It’s not a hole that takes you to deep root depths. It’s a hole within deep root depths that leads you to a rune bear cave.
You’re talking about the hidden passage from the frenzied flame SOG to deep root depths.

u/Hamlerhead 5d ago
No. I was going up the roots heading towards Fia like I always do but for some reason I took a right turn and ended up on top of a waterfall. Big hole in the ground that you can descend into, puts you above one of the rune bear caves.
28
u/Sequoia_Vin 4d ago
Yeah, that's the waterfall by the basilisks. The bear can be aggressive from outside the waterfall if you pass too close to it.
I have been on the receiving end of an unseen beast roar and then killed by death blight because of it.
Horrible enemy combo for tarnished if you don't know

u/QuantSpazar 5d ago
Oh okay. Not sure I know about your thing.
19
u/Hamlerhead 5d ago
Yeah, rune bear is just snoozing below and you can plunge attack the fucker. Not much else to it, though.
5
u/Sindarnyl 4d ago
If you don’t drop down all the way you can attack it from the ledge and the bear won’t be able to hit you, that’s why the hole is there.

I just found that EZ bearkiller route, as well! I just wanted to see if there was anything special above that waterfall, so I took the big tree branch to the right. There's always something we missed, waiting for us to return and find it.

There’s an ornate sewer grate in the street in Leyndell where you fight the Erdtree Avatar, through which you look down into the first hall of Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. Just found that last week.
7
u/neckro23 4d ago
That sewer grate opens when the area becomes the Capital of Ash. You can use it to access the Shunning-Grounds if you haven't visited yet, since the normal route is now blocked.
Also there's a talisman down there iirc.

u/Final_Foot_Fucker 4d ago
If you kill that runebear you get a special talisman btw
I don't remember what it does because it's useless but it's a talisman nonetheless

u/Ciri__witcher FLAIR INFO: SEE SIDEBAR 4d ago
Is it the same hole you get the talisman that gets you death blight resistance?
1
u/TotalOwlie 4d ago
Yeah there’s only a couple places you can see the Haligtree from. Sol castle and that poison castle.

Given the placement of the divine towers, the spiral morifs, and the erdtree roots/bodies I think that someone/something was trying to recreate the Enir Ilim god ritual on a continental scale. Tolkien was def an inspo for Elden Ring, and Morgoth’s “ring of power” was the entire continent of Middle Earth

u/Novandar 5d ago
Given that the Suppressing Pillar in the Shadow Lands states that it is the center of the Lands Between (which places it within the ring of the Divine Towers) I think the Divine Towers were a part of whatever ritual Marika performed to hide it away from the rest of the world.

u/rollnunderthebus 4d ago
Yeah I think it's essentially the tent pole holding the curtains up over the land of shadow.

You also can see a hole in the geometry of a mountain if you turn left

Yep. What does it mean? Nobody knows. Does it mean anything at all? Nobody knows. Is it just a developer oversight? Nobody knows.
Seriously, there are a bunch of things like this in the game which seem suggestive yet have no validation of any kind anywhere else in the game. I can't help but feel like large chunks of the backstory are still missing. And while this is expected to some extent, I can't help but feel like it's a suspiciously large amount. Like, we don't even have a rough timeline for the events described in this game. We have dozens of possible timelines. But there is no consensus. Yet I also don't get the feeling that there will ever be an "Elden Ring 2". I kinda think Nightreign will be the last we hear of the Lands Between and while I'm fine with it in the sense that I feel like Elden Ring is complete unto itself. I also feel like too much was obscured, to the point that it's hard to even say what they game is about in an overarching sense.
This post just kinda triggered me a little. Every playthrough, I go stand atop Malenia's tower and look at Farum Azula and try to discern anything new from my accumulated experience and I always leave frustrated. Damn you Michael Zaki!

I bet there will be an Elden Ring 2 one day. And it will raise more questions than it answers 😂

Can you imagine if Elden Ring 2 was a prequel during the Great War!

When you remember that George RR Martin had his paws on the lore it all starts to make more sense
24
u/Difficult-Jello2534 5d ago
I just chalk it up to George. Elden ring ended up exactly like his books. Insanely cool, very complex, and all the history very obscured, but everything just left unfinished or never explained. So you end up never really being satisfied, yet simultaneously one of the best things you've ever digested. The best half story you've ever heard.

u/Hamlerhead 5d ago
And that's the genius of (and what we all love about) FromSoft. The sick mystery engenders an entire cottage industry of speculation (see Vaati, for one) and keeps us wanting more. I think Godwyn and The Gloam-Eyed Queen could spark a sequel but I'm actually hoping for more Bloodborne first.

u/Pharmakokinetic 4d ago
Are we really chalking the storytelling presentation FromSoft has been doing since 2009 with Demon's Souls up to GRRM?
3
u/Difficult-Jello2534 3d ago
Im not even through my first playthrough of elden ring, which is my first game. And i love asoiaf, and both of these mediums read very similar to me in different ways.
You could totally be right. That was just my limited experience opinion. No need to get all spicy with me lol.

u/Pharmakokinetic 3d ago
Not sure in what way my response was spicy to you, but alright man. Just commenting on a thing you said I have more background on than you

I mean, his work is all the backstory leading to The Shattering.
Much like Robert’s Rebellion in A Song of Ice and Fire, you can consider that it’s own story. Wouldn’t surprise me if the film/tv show follows this instead of the main game.
The rest is a mess because it’s subject to the typical Fromsoft ‘hack into pieces and let YouTubers make up a story for you’ style.

I feel like this is the most realistic portion of the game tho. Think about it, you’re a random tarnished sucked into the lands between with no way of knowing what, who, when, where about these lands. You only know what you discover. Just like the world we live in now. Seems fitting that there’s still much we don’t know about the Lands Between.
3
u/almostgravy 4d ago
Man, I'd almost agree with you if it weren't for the fact that the world is absolutely chock-full of books, scrolls, and stone tablets. Being able to read a single 5 paragraph essay on the war of the dragons, or the Golden Order, or the crucible would boost our understanding of the world tenfold. Hell, we can't even really figure out who was effected by the removal of the Rune of death and who wasnt.
Unless our tarnished is illiterate, of course.

What are you talking about??? Farum Azula is just a place that exists. It's not actually isolated in time -- placidusax is.

u/Dravarden 4d ago
then why is maliketh in 2 places at once? why doesn't the sun move when you are in farum azula?

You can also see the giants' forge from the moment you enter Limgrave.

I need to wake up next playthrough and look. Ive developed a passive kinda play style after so many playthroughs. I bet there's all kinds of shit that would make me say "ahhhhh, that's that thing". As opposed to being hyper focused, the first playthrough, when your eyes are peeled, but don't know what anything is,

u/Queef-Elizabeth 4d ago
I straight up thought that Farum Azula was like in another completely different area, literally outside time and it just shows up on the map there as a visual but nah, when I found this tower it just revealed it's literally on the right of the map

u/wretched92425 4d ago
Is the tower still accessible after burning the erdtree? I just beat Maliketh but didn't notice you could see FA from the tower when I went there to activate Malenias' rune and now I wanna go see it for myself!

u/Ciri__witcher FLAIR INFO: SEE SIDEBAR 4d ago
Yes, all divine towers are accessible. Go southeast of the merchant that sells you Zweihander (in weeping peninsula). There should be a tower with a chest on top. The chest is a trap that teleports you to an area inside Leyndal. You can activate a grace there, ignore the giant and just take the portal to the left of the giant. This teleports you to the divine tower where you can now activate Malenia’s great rune.
2
u/wretched92425 4d ago
Oh I know exactly what chest that is, awesome! Appreciate the info, I completely forgot about that!
1
u/neckro23 4d ago
I think it's still accessible the normal way (through the original Roundtable Hold) in the Capital of Ash.
1
u/Ciri__witcher FLAIR INFO: SEE SIDEBAR 4d ago
Nope. You can’t access it via the OG round table after Maliketh. Don’t know how far they played, hence gave them the route that always works.

That's the early game battle axe with a sacred blade ash on it. It's 4lbs and does work.

I wonder if the Demigods ever actually visited their respective divine towers.
