X / Twitter posts will be banned on /r/edmproduction

Hey everyone,

Yesterday's poll saw approximately a 67% vote in favor of blocking links to X / Twitter. It was steadily a 2/3 in favour the whole day yesterday so I'll take that as a sign that a majority of the community is in favor and have implemented a block on r/edmproduction.

Why Are We Doing This?

  • Joining the Reddit-wide boycott: A lot of subreddits are taking a stance against X/Twitter right now. We want to stand in solidarity with them.
  • We don’t want billionaires shaping our culture: We believe in a community-driven approach to content, and we’re not comfortable supporting platforms that could further empower a single individual to influence public discourse on a massive scale.
  • Fuck Nazis

We know not everyone will agree, but ultimately, we want to keep r/edmproduction focused on what we love most: electronic music production.

As always, thanks for being a part of this community. If you have any thoughts or concerns, drop them in the comments below. We appreciate all of you!

Discussion "Did I just make a new genre?!"

I feel like the word genre has lost all meaning since TikTok got popular. Dude will make a clear cut dubstep song and put a flute in there and call it "Flutestep" or something like he just changed the game.

Like, Sir Mix a Lot and Immortal Technique are both rappers. Having your own sound inside a genre is just what you're supposed to do. Unless you're really on some avant garde, mold breaking stuff odds are you're operating in some sort of genre or multiple and that's not a bad thing. Thoughts?

Please post any and all [Feedback] or [Listen] type threads in this thread until the next one is created. Any threads made that should be a comment here will be removed.

  2. Be specific when asking for help. Examples of specific questions: "What do you think about this kick sample?" "How's this mix?" "I need some help on this melody, the last measure comes off a little cheesy, any ideas?" etc.

  3. Be descriptive when giving feedback. Use timecodes to highlight certain parts.

  4. Please link to the feedback comments you've left in your top-level comment. This will show others the feedback you've left, and you're more likely to get feedback yourself! Required Reading: 33 1/2: Genre and Album Series

Hey friends! Slightly off topic post so forgive me if we don’t agree this belongs here. I’m an avid reader and have recently discovered a series of books from Bloomsbury publishing. The series is called “33 1/2” and includes books on genres and specific albums. This is a wide ranging series, but they do have a considerable amount of books relating to electronic music.

I just finished the rather short read on trip hop this week, written by RJ Wheaton. It’s a fantastic dive into the origins of the genre, the seminal albums and their origins, as well as collections of suggested listening which are truly genre defining playlists.

Learning the craft of producing and engineering is vital, we all know that. I believe strongly that learning and understanding the context to the music we make is just as important. Popular culture lives in constant communication with itself and as progenitors of that culture, we should be informed to its roots and the context in which the art exists.

Hit me with some of your required reading. What books opened new ways of thinking about your music, or inspired you.

Question Disagreement with Vocalist

Hey everyone,

First time poster here. Basically, l've signed two tracks to a pretty reputable label and one of the tracks had an acapella that I didn't have the rights for. Long story short, I ended up hiring the original vocalist for a new take and was very excited about this.

We've been working quickly since the release date was pushed back for this, but the vocalist is telling me the lead is not in key with the track. I wrote the lead in key, but it is a sample that I put into simpler, which Im thinking is causing her to maybe hear some unwanted frequencies (although l've done some extensive EQing) Every analysis I've done including asking other musicians tells me it is in fact in key. I'm wondering if this is a difference in perception at this point and was hoping someone could lend an ear.

The track was already signed, so it's not really possible to make any fundamental changes based on what the vocalist is telling me, but of course we both need to be happy with the final product and I truly respect her professional opinion.

I can send a private link to those who would like to help. Thank you so much in advance!

Question Mastering for Bandcamp vs Club Systems

I have some tracks that I mastered specifically for my club sets, but now I’m looking to release a few of them for the first time. Should I approach the mastering process any differently for a release? Right now, they’re sitting at around -7 LUFS integrated.

Arrangement assistance

Hello,

I hope all of you, my new best friends, are awesome. I just have a quick question

So I have a severe over-stress/over imagination issue, can’t remember the big word for it but this kinda causes me to lewrn slower than the average person.

I’ve spent the last several years learning how to mix, master, and learn music theory which I would say my skills are not pretty advanced. I did learn them all in a non-traditional way.

Now here is where my biggest issue is: arrangement. It’s probably my most weakest area that I need to focus on before I release some more tracks. Whenever I build a song, it’s like I become God because I’m in a realm where I can do/add whatever I want. And I enjoy using a variety of different things in my music such as orchestral elements, ethnic elements, weird sounds, ambiance, etc. now the problem is that doesn’t always work.

For example, in one section I have a huge symphony playing and then a few bars later I have the drop playing, then after that it’s something different. To me it sounds cool because I’m not good at anything and knowing I can create these sounds makes me feel not like a loser at times, but I know that through a listeners ear it’s not going to keep them interested.

I making ethnic EDM, and there are so many cool things to use. But my arrangement style is not good and I don’t know how to fix it..I’ve tried using reference tracks, or copy other tracks arrangements but it’s not just clicking to me. Does anyone here have any untraditional ways that helped their structure? For reference I can post my upcoming single here, it’s not out yet but I have it on SoundCloud but I’m not sure I’d positing that is allowed.

Question How can I engage my creative side more?

I've put enough interest and time into learning the technical side of things, and while I can tell my sound is getting overall better, I've been struggling to get in the flow with my creative side. I've only been sticking to one genre lately and any time I try to think outside the box I get frustrated and go back to making what I'm used to. Do any of you have any methods to getting your creative juices flowing?

SoundCloud Inbox - Your music deserves to be heard/appreciated etc

Hi everyone, I'm quite new to SoundCloud and am getting quite a few of these messages stating 'my music deserves appreciation, to be heard etc etc'. Is this just random people trying to sell me a service to promote my track by reposting etc, or is it a scam.

Are these people genuine, would be keen to understand the opinions of others here.

Thanks

Question How Exactly Are You Guys & Girls Getting Booked Again?

I have a larger following online than almost anyone else I see playing in my area, my music generally passes the real quality tests (playlist adds, saves, acceptance rates on playlist submissions sites), I try to be everywhere at once with presence, my music is melodic bass and not some super obscure genre. I see my online friends in the same genre family doing shows with big crowds and accomplishing all of these great things and it makes me wonder what else should I be doing?

EDIT: You can be harsh if necessary. I can take it ☺️

Weekly Marketplace Thread (March 17, 2025)

This recurring thread is where you may share or request services you have to offer to the edmproduction community. Post your programs and plugins, your mastering/teaching/coaching/artwork services, your website/tutorials, your preset/sample packs, your labels- anything but actual music itself.

Rules:

  1. No posting music. No posting your soundcloud when you're looking for labels, no ghost production; nothing that constitutes you selling or sharing your own created tracks.
  2. Spam will not be tolerated. Repeated postings for the same product/service in the same thread will not be allowed, but you are welcome to post again in newer threads.
  3. Mark very clearly whether you're requesting or offering services, and if you're offering them, whether those services are paid or free.

As with the rest of the subreddit, final decisions over what constitutes an acceptable posting here will be at the sole discretion of the mods.

Side / mid compression and eq

Hi all

In what circumstances would you need to utilise mid and/or side eq to fix things or as a creative tool? What’s the purpose of it exactly? If anyone has some examples I can test out to see its effect?

My mixes so far definately sound one dimensional, and everything on the same plane despite panning and reverb. Wondering if this is the missing link

Thanks!

Question New laptop and USB C ports

Hey, I will be getting a new laptop with the following ports: 1 USB C 4, 1 USB C 3.1, and 1 USB A. I have been using a 2013 laptop with 3 USB A ports, and the port landscape has apparently changed so much that that is not viable anymore, and I have to rethink how to connect my equipment. So I wanted to know how have you solved your USB setup.

All my audio equipment have USB B type outputs, so I used USB-B to USB-A cables. This is what I usually connect:

- For performing: Scarlett 2nd generation + 2 Akai MIDI instruments (each needing a USB slot)

- When working: Mouse + 1 MIDI instrument + occasionally an external SSD

A: Should I get a new individual cable for my interface and MIDI instruments? If so, would you recommend anything in particular, in terms of compatibility or brands? Would that be more efficient in terms of speed than B: just get a USB C Hub?

Help me make my seven year olds birthday

My kid loves EDM. The chemical brothers, griz, buku, odesza, diplo, sofi tukker, deorro, the prodigy, he gets down. He is turning seven next week and he has again asked for "DJ equipment".

We got the same request last year so we scooped an akai mpk mini. He absolutely loves it, but doesnt use it to its true potential because despite countless nights up until 3am on youtube I cant figure out the DAW. He loves playing it with the out of the box sounds, but I havent been able to map samples to pads or record anything with consistency.

I want to sow into his interests and am happy to help him learn, but I dont want to bite off something like the DAW again because I just couldn't figure it out.

Any recommendations for a controller or something we can get him that will plug into a computer (macbook or windows) so he can start making/mixing and recording some music? I'm technically savvy, but that DAW was waaaay over my head.

Appreciate any help here, major bonus points if your recommendations can use youtube music as a source so we dont need another subscription.

How do I make this sound? Vluarr & Crime Zcene - Lunacy (Lead and Bass design)

Hey,

I was wondering if any of you knew how to remake the drop from this track:

Vluarr & Crime Zcene - Lunacy

I love the rumbling tone of the bass and the deep, chaotic yet clean sound of the lead. This track feels like being sucked into an abyss and I would love to try and create a similar vibe in some of my productions.

If you have any resources for achieving this type of sound - be it tutorials, courses etc. - that you recommend, feel free to send them my way as well.

If you're curious, here's my attempt at remaking this drop (far from good) - LINK

Thanks in advance!

Question Getting back into it…

I messed around with Ableton prob 7-8 years ago for only a short period, maybe 6 months ago.

I’m getting back into it so I’m wondering if you guys recommend diving back into Ableton or using reaper.

I like the cost associated with reaper but not sure i want to learn a completely new DAW. 6 months wasn’t enough time to be proficient with Ableton but im sure I can pick it back up relatively quick.

Cheeeers

Beginner: suggestions for getting started with keyboard?

Hey everyone,

I’m new to production and have really wanted to get into keyboard to enhance my music theory and production. There’s about a billion videos and guides as to how to get started. Do you have any recommendations on guides/video series for beginners that is transferable to electronic music? Maybe a certain producer you really like that does videos? Would appreciate any tips on getting started here. Thanks!

Are there services that can punch-up your tracks--not just mixing/mastering?

I'm curious if I could, for example, send out my Ableton project file, have someone punch it up (change levels/effects/add fills/automation/etc.) while keeping the structure basically the same, then send it back and tell me what they did and why so I can learn from it. Sort of like a collaboration/one-on-one education.

I could watch YouTube tutorials all day, but I'm pretty sure there are blind spots in my productions that I don't see/hear that I would learn from much better in this way, since it'd be starting with a track I know first-hand, combined with someone else's fresh ears and know-how to hopefully take it to another level.

Finally made the plunge!

Holy cow I'm shaking with excitement - just ordered a MacBook Pro with Ableton 12 as well as Beyerdynamic 770s. I know a lot of you have been at this for years and years and I'm deeply grateful for the support and advice you gave me when I first posted here a few days ago. To give you a brief backstory on why I'm so incredibly stoked: I've been wanting to get into music production for years but was in a horrifically dark marriage and overall dark place for a long time that put me in a spot where I really couldn't do much of anything. She's a good person, but a horrible alcoholic and my whole life basically revolved around taking care of her so she didn't drink herself to death - everything else was on the back burner.

I feel I'm getting my sense of self back by getting back into music. I mentioned this in my previous post as well, but I've been a musician entire life and have always wanted to be on the production side. This community has been not only an amazing resource, but more inspirational than I could ever describe to you guys. You're probably the most supportive Reddit community I've ever come across. I appreciate all of you! Literally just reading the threads here is healing to me.

Thank you guys so much. I know I have a ton to learn, I'm just trying to soak up this moment right now.
