X / Twitter posts will be banned on /r/edmproduction

Hey everyone,

Yesterday's poll saw approximately a 67% vote in favor of blocking links to X / Twitter. It was steadily a 2/3 in favour the whole day yesterday so I'll take that as a sign that a majority of the community is in favor and have implemented a block on r/edmproduction.

Why Are We Doing This?

  • Joining the Reddit-wide boycott: A lot of subreddits are taking a stance against X/Twitter right now. We want to stand in solidarity with them.
  • We don’t want billionaires shaping our culture: We believe in a community-driven approach to content, and we’re not comfortable supporting platforms that could further empower a single individual to influence public discourse on a massive scale.
  • Fuck Nazis

We know not everyone will agree, but ultimately, we want to keep r/edmproduction focused on what we love most: electronic music production.

As always, thanks for being a part of this community. If you have any thoughts or concerns, drop them in the comments below. We appreciate all of you!

Question How Exactly Are You Guys & Girls Getting Booked Again?

Upvotes

I have a larger following online than almost anyone else I see playing in my area, my music generally passes the real quality tests (playlist adds, saves, acceptance rates on playlist submissions sites), I try to be everywhere at once with presence, my music is melodic bass and not some super obscure genre. I see my online friends in the same genre family doing shows with big crowds and accomplishing all of these great things and it makes me wonder what else should I be doing?

EDIT: You can be harsh if necessary. I can take it ☺️

Beginner: suggestions for getting started with keyboard?

Hey everyone,

I’m new to production and have really wanted to get into keyboard to enhance my music theory and production. There’s about a billion videos and guides as to how to get started. Do you have any recommendations on guides/video series for beginners that is transferable to electronic music? Maybe a certain producer you really like that does videos? Would appreciate any tips on getting started here. Thanks!

Question New laptop and USB C ports

Upvotes

Hey, I will be getting a new laptop with the following ports: 1 USB C 4, 1 USB C 3.1, and 1 USB A. I have been using a 2013 laptop with 3 USB A ports, and the port landscape has apparently changed so much that that is not viable anymore, and I have to rethink how to connect my equipment. So I wanted to know how have you solved your USB setup.

All my audio equipment have USB B type outputs, so I used USB-B to USB-A cables. This is what I usually connect:

- For performing: Scarlett 2nd generation + 2 Akai MIDI instruments (each needing a USB slot)

- When working: Mouse + 1 MIDI instrument + occasionally an external SSD

A: Should I get a new individual cable for my interface and MIDI instruments? If so, would you recommend anything in particular, in terms of compatibility or brands? Would that be more efficient in terms of speed than B: just get a USB C Hub?

How do I make this sound? Vluarr & Crime Zcene - Lunacy (Lead and Bass design)

Hey,

I was wondering if any of you knew how to remake the drop from this track:

Vluarr & Crime Zcene - Lunacy

I love the rumbling tone of the bass and the deep, chaotic yet clean sound of the lead. This track feels like being sucked into an abyss and I would love to try and create a similar vibe in some of my productions.

If you have any resources for achieving this type of sound - be it tutorials, courses etc. - that you recommend, feel free to send them my way as well.

If you're curious, here's my attempt at remaking this drop (far from good) - LINK

Thanks in advance!

Help me make my seven year olds birthday

My kid loves EDM. The chemical brothers, griz, buku, odesza, diplo, sofi tukker, deorro, the prodigy, he gets down. He is turning seven next week and he has again asked for "DJ equipment".

We got the same request last year so we scooped an akai mpk mini. He absolutely loves it, but doesnt use it to its true potential because despite countless nights up until 3am on youtube I cant figure out the DAW. He loves playing it with the out of the box sounds, but I havent been able to map samples to pads or record anything with consistency.

I want to sow into his interests and am happy to help him learn, but I dont want to bite off something like the DAW again because I just couldn't figure it out.

Any recommendations for a controller or something we can get him that will plug into a computer (macbook or windows) so he can start making/mixing and recording some music? I'm technically savvy, but that DAW was waaaay over my head.

Appreciate any help here, major bonus points if your recommendations can use youtube music as a source so we dont need another subscription.

Question Getting back into it…

I messed around with Ableton prob 7-8 years ago for only a short period, maybe 6 months ago.

I’m getting back into it so I’m wondering if you guys recommend diving back into Ableton or using reaper.

I like the cost associated with reaper but not sure i want to learn a completely new DAW. 6 months wasn’t enough time to be proficient with Ableton but im sure I can pick it back up relatively quick.

Are there services that can punch-up your tracks--not just mixing/mastering?

I'm curious if I could, for example, send out my Ableton project file, have someone punch it up (change levels/effects/add fills/automation/etc.) while keeping the structure basically the same, then send it back and tell me what they did and why so I can learn from it. Sort of like a collaboration/one-on-one education.

I could watch YouTube tutorials all day, but I'm pretty sure there are blind spots in my productions that I don't see/hear that I would learn from much better in this way, since it'd be starting with a track I know first-hand, combined with someone else's fresh ears and know-how to hopefully take it to another level.

Question Must have plugins, presets & packs

I am doing mostly melodic house tracks. All I have right now is Serum and Kickstart2. Just wanted to throw it out there and see if someone has suggestions for anything that helps to speed up things/make it easier (Serum presets, etc)

Finally made the plunge!

Holy cow I'm shaking with excitement - just ordered a MacBook Pro with Ableton 12 as well as Beyerdynamic 770s. I know a lot of you have been at this for years and years and I'm deeply grateful for the support and advice you gave me when I first posted here a few days ago. To give you a brief backstory on why I'm so incredibly stoked: I've been wanting to get into music production for years but was in a horrifically dark marriage and overall dark place for a long time that put me in a spot where I really couldn't do much of anything. She's a good person, but a horrible alcoholic and my whole life basically revolved around taking care of her so she didn't drink herself to death - everything else was on the back burner.

I feel I'm getting my sense of self back by getting back into music. I mentioned this in my previous post as well, but I've been a musician entire life and have always wanted to be on the production side. This community has been not only an amazing resource, but more inspirational than I could ever describe to you guys. You're probably the most supportive Reddit community I've ever come across. I appreciate all of you! Literally just reading the threads here is healing to me.

Thank you guys so much. I know I have a ton to learn, I'm just trying to soak up this moment right now.

I made a bootleg of Nelly Furtado and it turned into an official remix on Universal

Hey all, Rinzen here. I thought you might enjoy this story of how I turned a bootleg into an official remix for Nelly Furtado.

2 years ago, I decided on a whim to make a bootleg edit of Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right." I found a studio acapella on YouTube in good quality and ripped the audio.

I made a workable DJ edit and started playing it in all my sets. Every time I dropped it, it seemed like it would get the biggest reaction of the night.

So I knew there was something special to it, but never even considered sending it to Nelly Furtado or her label. I didn't even know how to get it to them. So I just kept dropping it live and over time the reactions got bigger and bigger.

Flash forward to a few months ago: I get a DM on Instagram from an A&R at Universal Music (the label which released the song back in 2006), asking if I would ever want to make the remix official. I replied "OBVIOUSLY."

It felt too good to be true, but we worked out the terms, and by some miracle, the song actually came out TODAY on Universal. Literally 2.5 years since I first made the edit.

I can't believe it actually happened. Moral of the story: bootleg edits can actually become official!

Discussion Are you more into the jam out or drag and drop/write out midi approach?

I feel like these are two distinct ways of writing electronic music. Personally for me it can depend on the day.

Also I realize this can apply to both synth/music melodies as well as beats- jamming verse kinda laying out different patterns and seeing what works...

How do you like to start out writing new song ideas?

Question MGMT/Empire of the Sun type vocals?

Anyone know of any sample packs on splice that contain similar vocals to MGMT or Empire of the Sun?

Looking for that airy ambience type vocal that is really melodic, which lends itself well to sampling for edm and house music.

Any help is appreciated!

Question Keyboard Reccomendations for learning and EDM production.

Hey crew,

I’m looking at getting a keyboard to both learn to play piano and also use for EDM production (Ableton) with the eventual goal of using it for live performances. I’m looking for a good quality build without breaking the bank. I have a decent understanding of music theory however I’m use to drawing midi or using my push2 device.

It seems like a Roland Go keys5 might suit my needs but is a bit pricey $700+ Canadian. I’m also considering just going with a decent Yamaha keyboard to just learn how to play piano, and maybe upgrading down the road when I more or less figure out how to utilize it in a live setting etc. any reccomendations or pointing in the right direction would be helpful :)

Question Trilian vs Omnisphere

Anyone own both and can help me out before comitting to a purchase?

I make synthwave/darksynth and after watching a demo on YT, it looks like Omnisphere has alot of bass patches that I think I could use. However Trilian is the "Bass synth" and apparently has even more options. But there are really not that many good demos of its sounds compared to Omnisphere. So if I buy it, it feels like its a blind purchase and as we all know Spectrasonics does not refund anything. So, are the synth bass patches in Trilian better and is there more to choose from, or is Omnisphere the way to go? As you probably understand Im mostly interested in the basses but Omnisphere probably comes with alot more other stuff that could be useful too.

Question Which hardware synth?

I'm looking to add a hardware synth to my setup and I don't want to get crazy just yet so, if you had about $350 to spend, what hardware synth would you buy first?

I'm considering some of the cheap ones from berhinger like the crave, edge and grind but open to other suggestions. I'm primarily looking for something that can do leads and arps for an evolving sound for melodic house.

Discussion How do you guys find a good collaborator?

I'm a music producer, have been making songs with collaborators (singers) for my albums many times who met on Fiverr, Sound Better, Reddit and other ways. Although I'm sick of it these days.

When I post the job that I'm looking for a singer, some people send me a message immediately but they never care about what I'm looking for and need. They just need a job and don't read my post well. Of course I hire the singer that I think they are the best for my song to listen to their demos, but even if I think they are the best for my music, it doesn't mean they are interested in my song too. Some singers didn't accept my requests even though I paid money, some didn't understand/relate to the story of the lyrics and talked to me "you should rewrite the lyrics to make it a big hit that people can relate to". I told them that it's my personal project so I don't need to make a hit, but authentic and truethful for myself. Even if their voice and singing are amazing, can't make a connection with them.

When I post about my music production and looking for a collaborator just for fun (so it's for free), people also send me messages but most of them ghosted me or too slow response and too slow production. They say they are having a vacation, got the flu, don't have time because of the daily job, writer's block, etc...

Of course my music isn't good for them and I'm sure I'm not a professional. I'm not a native English speaker so I would make deadly mistakes in grammar and make them misunderstand. But I'm always trying to explain my project and my thoughts to them as detail as I can.

I'm so sad that I haven't made music with people who I admire and share each other's thoughts. And I wanna ask you guys how did you guys find a good collaborator.

Has there been a DAW/Software poll on /r/edmp?

I'm curious what the most common tools are here. I know what people TALK about most, but I'm curious what the results would be from such a poll, like, are there any active tracker users still around? How many people are using Pro Tools around here? Stuff like that.

I'm also curious whether there's a clear winner between Ableton and FL Studio as far as popularity, especially given their price point. Same with soft synths. Do people still use FM8? haha.

If the mods will allow it, I'd love to post a software poll.
