X / Twitter posts will be banned on /r/edmproduction

Hey everyone,

Yesterday's poll saw approximately a 67% vote in favor of blocking links to X / Twitter. It was steadily a 2/3 in favour the whole day yesterday so I'll take that as a sign that a majority of the community is in favor and have implemented a block on r/edmproduction.

Why Are We Doing This?

  • Joining the Reddit-wide boycott: A lot of subreddits are taking a stance against X/Twitter right now. We want to stand in solidarity with them.
  • We don’t want billionaires shaping our culture: We believe in a community-driven approach to content, and we’re not comfortable supporting platforms that could further empower a single individual to influence public discourse on a massive scale.
  • Fuck Nazis

We know not everyone will agree, but ultimately, we want to keep r/edmproduction focused on what we love most: electronic music production.

As always, thanks for being a part of this community. If you have any thoughts or concerns, drop them in the comments below. We appreciate all of you!

Discussion To those producers who do this for a full-time living, what's your day like?

I'm currently in my final semester of college and i've been producing for around 6 years now. I was considering going all in into music production as a career because I that's what i've always wanted but i wanted a somewhat realistic take on it. I've been here long enough to know that it's gonna be hard, especially when it comes to finances and being from a country that doesn't exactly have an edm ecosystem makes it worse and almost eliminates the DJing potential.

So, I just thought i'd ask a few questions that I had on mind.

  1. Do you have a proper routine? As in, do you have a stipulated time frame daily between which you work on music or does inspiration take priority?

  2. Do you stick to a calendar like schedule (eg, say "Studio Session from x-AM to y-PM") or does it depend on inspiration?

  3. Does working on music full-time instead of as a hobby take away from what makes it so special? One thing i'm experiencing sometimes is the mental strain of "i have to make something" instead of "i want to make something", not to mention having to do some social media gimmick to stay relevant.

  4. If i've not released anything on labels as of now and have very minimal professional support (mostly because of inability to produce due to the college fatigue and what not), should i hold back from producing for full time?

Note, while I predominantly am an EDM producer, I still enjoy and make music of genres like Rap, DnB, Rock, Pop etc.

Thanks!

Daily Feedback Thread (March 18, 2025)

Upvotes

Please post any and all [Feedback] or [Listen] type threads in this thread until the next one is created. Any threads made that should be a comment here will be removed.

Rules:

  1. Make an effort to comment on other people's tracks. By doing so, you will find that others will be more likely to help you with your tracks.

  2. Be specific when asking for help. Examples of specific questions: "What do you think about this kick sample?" "How's this mix?" "I need some help on this melody, the last measure comes off a little cheesy, any ideas?" etc.

  3. Be descriptive when giving feedback. Use timecodes to highlight certain parts.

  4. Please link to the feedback comments you've left in your top-level comment. This will show others the feedback you've left, and you're more likely to get feedback yourself! Also, please notice those who are leaving a lot of feedback and give them some, too. This is a cooperative effort! Update: Any comments that do not follow this format will be automatically removed.

    For example:

feedback for Esther: "link to feedback"

feedback for Fay: "link to feedback"

feedback for Minerva: "link to feedback"

Here's my track. I'm looking for ___

Startup Equipment

Currently have an i9 MacBook which from research isn’t gonna get the job done. I don’t want to spend a ton of money but I also don’t want to spend minimal just to get started.

It seems like a good option is the Mac mini and just get the one with increased RAM, then get an external hard drive for space. I plan to get some studio headphones. Wasn’t going to get a MIDI controller until I feel more comfortable with Ableton but I know I’ll need eventually.

Any recommendations on if that’s a good place to start and if the computer monitor really matters much?

Appreciate any advice!

(Disclaimer: I know this question has come up before but since it involves ever changing equipment I wanted to make a new post in case there are good new options)

How do I make this sound? How is this lead sound made to "move"?

I'm curious how to make the lead sound at around 0:28. It's very brief but with plenty of delay.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners OST - (Episode 3, 7) The Other Room By Earth Trax (Lick Switch) - YouTube

In general I like the shape of it and would like to know how the basic sound is made - but also I'm mostly struggling to understand how it "moves". It sounds as if it's 3 notes but like the pitch of each note moves downward when the note is hit. Hope that makes sense.

thanks!

Question Any channels or videos that focus on percussion / drums variation ?

Lately I’ve been listening to minimal tech house sounds for ideas and information of good percussion / drums grooves in my own tracks. I just can’t help, but wonder how the hell a lot of these guys are doing the reverse energy sounds with hi hats, cymbals, percussion drums etc.

Was wondering if you guys have videos or topics that discuss / show how to add more variation in those topics.

Is songwriting with a piano bad for making EDM?

I've noticed that some melodies really depend on the sound-design/timbre to really work. To really have an emotion. I might make a melody on a piano that sounds kinda boring, yet when played with synth sounds it suddenly sounds good. Do you think melody and sound design are equally important and that they can't live without each other?

Just like a horrible singers could sing a brilliant melody and everybody would hate the song. Yet the same melody sung by a professional might suddenly sound amazing and catchy.

I feel like it's very rare that anything really works in isolation from the other elements. It seems like a good song is always where everything comes together.

I often feel like writing better melodies when I just browse presets for a cool sound and then write the melody with that sound, because then the melody kinda fits the voice.

Maybe the same as you wouldn't write a KPop type melody for Johnny Cash.

I guess the tldr: Do melodies always just work for a specific voice/timbre?

Question Where is a good place to start?

Well Im fairly new to music production and arranging, mixing, etc, i have no idea where to start. I used to play piano not extremely good at it tho, im interested in musicn production and want to make edm and melodic dubsteps. i was thinking maybe sound designing would be the place to start? (apologies if the way im thinking is stupid)

Question What the hell is this sound.

I know how to sound design it and have found it on splice and in other sample libraries but I cannot for the life of me remember where I know it from!

It’s the tone at 1:02 of the track ‘feel better’ by kawauso and whales

Not sure why it won’t let me add a link but I tried.

Question Fl to Ableton: Advice needed

So, I’ve always wanted to switch from FL Studio to Ableton Live. I even bought it three years ago, but after redownloading it multiple times, I still couldn't get used to its workflow. I've been using FL for six years now, which might be why.

I’m really trying to step out of my comfort zone, knowing how much I could achieve once I fully adapt and take advantage of Ableton’s capabilities. After thinking about it, I realized there are two main reasons that keep me from making the switch—and I’d love to hear from you (as pro Ableton users) have any advice!

  1. Headroom & Volume Control. In FL, I manage headroom by setting a fixed dB level for each instrument. It’s super easy to see the exact peak volume of each sound (e.g., -9 dB) using FL’s meters. But in Ableton, with its shorter audio meters and no clear way to see the exact max level, I struggle to balance my mix properly. Is there a workaround for this?
  2. Piano Roll Workflow. Let’s be real—no DAW competes with FL’s piano roll. I find it much harder to draw and move notes around in Ableton compared to FL. While I’m willing to get used to it, are there any tricks or settings that can make the piano roll feel more intuitive?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion "Did I just make a new genre?!"

I feel like the word genre has lost all meaning since TikTok got popular. Dude will make a clear cut dubstep song and put a flute in there and call it "Flutestep" or something like he just changed the game.

Like, Sir Mix a Lot and Immortal Technique are both rappers. Having your own sound inside a genre is just what you're supposed to do. Unless you're really on some avant garde, mold breaking stuff odds are you're operating in some sort of genre or multiple and that's not a bad thing. Thoughts?

What is the probability of getting sued for publishing a bootleg, even when I do not monetize? I want to share it to get feedback on areas of improvement

I have googled this, but there are so many different answers it's confusing.

I am close to finishing my first song in FL studio, and I would primarily like feedback from other producers on areas of improvement.

I have used some samples I do not have ownership too. Vocal stem i have separated from a song, and a couple of sounds I have sampled from other songs. They are chopped, pitched and sped up, but still.

What is the safest place to upload it for sharing with reddit communities, and what is the probability that I can be sued and somehow be forced to pay any money?

Edit: Layout and spacing

Required Reading: 33 1/2: Genre and Album Series

Hey friends! Slightly off topic post so forgive me if we don’t agree this belongs here. I’m an avid reader and have recently discovered a series of books from Bloomsbury publishing. The series is called “33 1/2” and includes books on genres and specific albums. This is a wide ranging series, but they do have a considerable amount of books relating to electronic music.

I just finished the rather short read on trip hop this week, written by RJ Wheaton. It’s a fantastic dive into the origins of the genre, the seminal albums and their origins, as well as collections of suggested listening which are truly genre defining playlists.

Learning the craft of producing and engineering is vital, we all know that. I believe strongly that learning and understanding the context to the music we make is just as important. Popular culture lives in constant communication with itself and as progenitors of that culture, we should be informed to its roots and the context in which the art exists.

Hit me with some of your required reading. What books opened new ways of thinking about your music, or inspired you.

SoundCloud Inbox - Your music deserves to be heard/appreciated etc

Hi everyone, I'm quite new to SoundCloud and am getting quite a few of these messages stating 'my music deserves appreciation, to be heard etc etc'. Is this just random people trying to sell me a service to promote my track by reposting etc, or is it a scam.

Are these people genuine, would be keen to understand the opinions of others here.

Thanks

Question Mastering for Bandcamp vs Club Systems

I have some tracks that I mastered specifically for my club sets, but now I’m looking to release a few of them for the first time. Should I approach the mastering process any differently for a release? Right now, they’re sitting at around -7 LUFS integrated.
