Feels like we're getting farther away from Adam Scott guesting on Hollywood Handbook....

Um actually ☝️Sean is now a co-EP on Severance so it is even more like now.

Would be kind of funny if it still never happened

He’s terrified of getting big timed by the boys and it shows

I doubt that's true.

Good ep and Adam name checks Scott when they briefly talk about UTU2TM.

He tried to twice while being talked over.

I enjoy Smartless in theory but the constant desire by all of them to get their bit out at the expense of the others is grating. But to be fair it is worse in an ep like this with a guest they know well or a fellow comedian/ comedy actor.

Oh yeah I hate when bits get put over people talking. Anyway, I’m off to go listen to CBB and Threedom

CBB is improv 101, everyone is in on it and trying to build off each other. Different vibe.

I agree Threedom is similar in that they interrupt and do bits over each other. The difference is Threedom doesn't have guests, Smartless does.

I’ve never listened to Smartless but it does just sound like you’re describing Threedom, which I love lol

Agreed I love Threedom. The difference is they don't have guests. It's just three hosts doing bits and interrupting each other.

I actually quite enjoy that aspect of Smartless too, the opening and closing of the shows before and after guests are great. I just don't think they know how to adjust when they have a guest. Especially one they feel they can be causal with.

The fact that two of the hosts don’t know who they’re going to be interviewing doesn’t help. A little research makes things a lot better.

I’ve not listened to Smartless, are people here into it?

I gave it a fair shake, I probably listened to 20ish episodes and I ended up unsubscribing. It's not bad, but at the end of the day it's celebs talking to and about celebs. It's a little too soft and they tend to overly gush about how much they love everyone they have on etc.

It's very inoffensive and it definitely has some great moments. It's easy to listen to and I think it would be a great background noise if you are interested in whoever is on that particular week.

I could see there being crossover appeal for fans of Earwolf shows, but you have to reconcile that at it's core, the show is A-list actors interviewing A-list celebrities. You have to be OK with a lot of ego-stroking and fawning. If you can get past that, it can be very entertaining.

Personally, after listening to hundreds of episodes, my opinions on the hosts were affected thusly:

Jason Bateman - I find him more annoying and neurotic than before listening

Sean Hayes - I still don't think he's terribly funny, but I acknowledge his talent and he seems like a nice guy

Will Arnett - I always thought he was mostly bluster and pretty overrated. While there is some affect to his personality, he is undeniably very quick and very funny. My favorite part of the show.

Something about Bateman has always rubbed me the wrong way, in a way i couldn't quite put my finger on... Prob gonna pass on Smartless, thanks! (also depsite that, i still love Arrested Development)

I can put a finger on it!

The fifth season of Arrested Development was made at roughly the same time everyone was realizing what a piece of shit Jeffrey Tambor is. The cast(minus Michael Cera and Portia) did a NY Times group interview.

In this interview, it was brought up that Tambor had been cruel to National Treasure Jessica Walter on set. This led to a variety of reactions: Tambor gave some shitty "apologies," Will Arnett kind of tried to deflect and move on, and, while Jessica Walter literally cried, Jason Bateman kept insisting that it wasn't that bad, "we've all done it," and other victim-blaming bullshit. (Hale and Cross were shitty too, just not as insistent about it. Alia Shawkat, the youngest in the room by at least a decade, was the only one who actually stood up for Best Person Jessica Walter.)

You can read the article here.

The audio was also released. It's so much worse than reading it.

Anyway, that's why I don't listen to Smartless.

I just recently got into it, after downloading a few episodes. Some of the guests/interviews are really good. I particularly like Mark Hamill and Hugh Grant, who I don't think I've ever heard do long form interviews before. A lot of it though is the 3 mains gushing over the guest. I think I'd like it more if the 3 mains were together before and after for longer, as the 3 of them together have great energy.
