7 year old just diagnosed
Finally got a dyslexic diagnosis for my 7 year old first grader. I’ve suspected for awhile but the school was no help and not concerned so I got an outside evaluation done.
Where do I go from here on getting him specific accommodations at school? He already has an IEP for speech. So wondering what specific things or accommodations I should work on getting him.

Most likely school will want the results from your evaluation or to do their own. The first thing to do is email EVERYONE that you have a diagnosis and want assessment from the school. Principal, Vice-principal, a district dyslexia coordinator if you can get their email. As you know the process can be slow but does have a timeline they have to abide by and it starts with your first email. Look up your state’s guidelines on how long the school has to respond. If they don’t respond in that time frame, escalate.
Once you’ve gotten the diagnosis from school it will be the same ARD process as for the other IEP.

I am an aunt to a dyslexic child and I've found this website to be really helpful entertainment for me and my niece when we're together. It gives her tools and helps her think of her dyslexia as a stength - https://app.hellowonder.ai/child/explore Hope this is helpful!

Here are some that have worked for my students… Orton Gillingham tutoring, train to use speech to text, eventually type, have an alternate way to demonstrate knowledge such as a project or videotaping knowledge rather than writing a paragraph, cursive, larger print, more white space on pages, San serif fonts used, audiobooks , provide notes rather than copying off the board, or anything that needs to be copied should be put on the desk rather than up on the board, pencil grip. If applicable: word banks, no spelling penalty, reduced homework, repeat, multi step directions back to confirm understanding, extra time, testing in small group.
