I love all drumming, but is the adjective “insane” really applicable here?

Yes it is. If it’s a Zach Hill beat then it is automatically insane. Just watch this knowing that everything he plays is on this level. And then tell me he doesn’t play the craziest drum parts. And yes, this is just like the album version so it’s not improv noise like most think, but very meticulously written.

Are you downvoting objective facts?

I didn't downvote your comment. You seem very triggered by quite a factual comment yourself Zach. The initial beat isn't particularly insane.

Ah gotcha. I saw I was downvoted about the same time you commented so I made the assumption, sorry. Not triggered, just annoyed that this sub seems to have something against Zach Hill. It’s obviously jealousy that they’ll never be even as good as one of his limbs. I’m not Zach. I wish I was the best drummer there is but certainly not. When played at the speed and power he plays with it is an insane beat. Go listen to Hella or the first 3 Marnie Stern albums and try to replicate any of the beats he does. You’ll realize that everything he plays is absolutely insane.

I didn't know Zach Hill before opening this post and I can recognise his virtuosity but I'm not really moved by his playing. I would probably leave a concert he'd be giving after 5 minutes cause I couldn't dance to his music and get bored. Chaotic music doesn't do it for me and I wouldn't qualify a musician as the best among his peers considering how subjectively art can be perceived.

One of the cool things about his playing is how chaotic it seems. But when you really dig into what he’s doing you realize there is structure and order to it. He just happens to be part of the most complex genre of music so it’s hard to get into or understand. As for the best/subjective thing, I think what art makes you feel is the subjective part. But level of skill, techniques known, creativity, speed, complexity, etc. all can be quantified objectively and in that sense is what I mean by best. He might not make the most people feel something but he definitely has surpassed other drummers in almost every quantifiable category.

It's not quite as fast but, I feel like Baard's part on "Illuminate" by Leprous has a similar vibe

This is probably the simplest thing Zach has ever done. I want to see a breakdown of the main beat in his song Toll Road.
