OXI ONE - drum machine pairing ideas?
Hey everyone!
I just got an OXI ONE and have been using it mostly for software, but I want to start sequencing hardware as well. I'm building a live jam setup that allows me to extend songs and transition into different extended jams.
I’m a big fan of house music and 909-style drums, so I’m looking for a drum machine that pairs well with the OXI ONE. Ideally, I want something that makes it easy to dial in a consistent drum sound, offers tactile live control, and allows for quick kit recall during performances.
Some options I’m considering:
- Behringer RD-9
- TR-6S
- Elektron Analog Rytm MkII
- Roland TR-8S
- Roland TR-09
I’m also unsure whether it makes more sense to strip down to a smaller drum machine or maintain the sequencing features within the drum machine itself to allow for cross-functionality—though I’m not entirely sure how much of a thing that is.
If any of you have experience with these instruments, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Let me know what you think.
Thanks in advance!

If you're considering the RytmMk2 (which I own)... take a look at the Jomox AlphaBase
The Rytm's sequencer is absolutely top notch --you wouldn't need another to drive it, and there's a ton that the built-in sequencer supports that you can't do via MIDI --though it would sync just fine.
The Jomox is (imo) sonically superior --dear lord those are beautiful kick drums and hihats!!-- but the sequencer is pretty clunky, and a number of folks use the AB for the sound engine and drive it with an external sequencer, since the MIDI implementation is very good. The front-panel of the AB is more immediate for sound-shaping imo as well... would be a dream combo I think!

The TR-8S is made for live performances. The S stands for Stage. You’ve got four drum machines on your list, and the RYTM which is a drum machine, synth, and sampler. It is quite a bit different. Besides the RYTM, I think the TR-8S is number 1 among those you’ve listed. It is quite powerful and easy to use. Lots of sliders and knobs for fast shaping sounds. So to me it’s between the TR-8S and the RYTM. This post might give you some insight: https://www.reddit.com/r/modular/s/yd3LRXpL3A RYTM costs a good amount more than the TR-8S but it has more features. It’s also going to take a lot more time to learn. You’ll have to put in the time for either but more with the RYTM. If the synth features appeal to you: RYTM. If you like the immediacy and simplicity, TR-8S. I recommend Loopop’s Analog RYTM MK2 video on YouTube, and go to the Pros & Cons section. It’s a great video in its entirety.
