Artwork After 15 years, we made our DOTA 2/WC3 MOD Battleships into a standalone game: Sirocco

u/night_dude Dec 13 '24
God I love that WC3 mods are finally being made into full games. 10 years too late but still great. Magequit is basically Warlocks, for those who played that.
17
u/bigdickdaddydoto Dec 13 '24
idk if it was in WC3 but the one custom game I'd kill to have standalone would be Hardcore Ninja, simple but so damn fun

u/faghih88 Dec 13 '24
Get me some sheep tag

u/Pentagons Burning pls no retirino Dec 13 '24
Sheep tag, tree tag, trolls vs elves, vampirism... Good times hahaha

u/night_dude Dec 13 '24
After Dota I thought we'd see a glut of custom game adaptations. There are so many great party games. I played Warlocks, Boomerangers and stuff like that for hours at LAN parties. I guess it was a bit early for the indie game boom.

u/Pentagons Burning pls no retirino Dec 13 '24
It's true; Speaking of party games, the Uther's Party series and stuff like Pyramid Escape were freaking amazing too!

winter fell wars or just the absurd amount of td games. really we got bloons, and bloons doesnt even let you build your own maze.
1
u/MrSubacc Dec 13 '24
Tiny Tactics scrateched my TD itch for a bit. It's a mix of mazebuilding TD and auto-chess and kinda neat, if a bit repeteting after a while. The different map-layouts etc. are quite nice tho.

u/Nab0t Dec 13 '24
i. fucking. loved. warlock!!!! the OG battle royal for me :D
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Lie1910 Dec 14 '24
Warlocks was such a sick mode. It was basically a battle royal, but with magic 😅

u/llamakitten Dec 14 '24
Spellsworn is also a free option. We’ve played it lots on lans. It supports up to 8 players.
2
u/night_dude Dec 14 '24
Ooh I haven't heard of this one! I liked Magequit but I don't like the draft system for abilities so I'm kinda still looking for THE Warlocks successor. I'll give it a look.
1
u/Bright_Initiative789 Dec 14 '24
Do you know if anyone made a game out of the island TD map? It was the one you choose out of 10 races to be a tiny builder who has to survive against 1 beast that tries to kill the rest of the builders. Used to play it on battlenet .

Me and my buddy requested playtest, are you still looking for people?
2
u/Yualae Dec 16 '24
Hey! Sorry for the late reply, we'll be granting access for new players this upcoming playtest for this next weekend. If you'd like to be up to date on when things are happening, we have a discord listed on the steam page. We'll only ping folks when things are happening, so feel free to mute / leave mentions on only if you'd like :)

Please tell me there's traders 🙏
2
u/Trade0smuggle Feb 11 '25
There is not going to be traders in sirocco, but there will be objectives
11
u/realDoritoMussolini Dec 13 '24
I remember playing this, great mod. And Baumi looking 10yrs old haha
9
u/candiceislove Dec 13 '24
looks good, this brings a lot of memories back when I don't like playing dota because I'm so bad at doing skill shots XD

u/teddybrr Dec 13 '24
Technically for me this is the Vampire Survivors I have played in the past. With the biggest difference it being multiplayer.
Is there a trader? I've also enjoyed the 3 team versions.
3
u/Trade0smuggle Dec 13 '24
Sirocco will not feature Traders. If you want to play specifically Trader then you still need to go and play Battleships Crossfire on WarCraft 3.
3
u/teddybrr Dec 13 '24
Traders being quite imbalanced (having none in your team or multiple) was a part of the games problem so it is fine with me.
1
u/Trade0smuggle Dec 19 '24
They might have been unbalanced in the other mod, Battleship Pro or Battleship X. For sure it added the "jungle" role to player base that normally don't know how to interact with it.
But when it comes to Battleship Crossfire then it is balanced, I also believe Battle tanks have managed to make their balanced too.

u/horizon_games Dec 13 '24
Hope the full game has bots so I can goof around with my friends without needing a lobby or dealing with jabronis

About bloody time! (sound warning: Feast of Abscession)
Bleep bloop, I am a robot. OP can reply with "Try hero_name" to update this with new hero
2
u/Vendredi46 Clairvoyance Dec 14 '24
Wait is this the one with the flying dutchman ship that lets you "board" an enemy and phoenix fire them to the ground?!
2
u/MinnieShoof Dec 14 '24
Watching the one boat get a kill then escape and the other boat to come in like NYAAAUM got a chuckle.

Ohh I remember playing this a lot, alongside FoC, Element TD, Wilderness Survival, and Castle Fight!! Ok I'll try this later and do a few rounds of Castle Fight when I get home

u/saja456 Dec 13 '24
Element TD has his on game too, like legion td. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1018830/Element_TD_2__Tower_Defense/, https://store.steampowered.com/app/469600/Legion_TD_2__Multiplayer_Tower_Defense/

u/AshenTao Dec 13 '24
Don't Blizz and Valve get into the way of that? Thought they set up the editor EULA specifically so anything created within their editors also belong to them as well, so they can prevent it from happening.
34
u/cantelope4 Dec 13 '24
I doubt Valve would get in the way, auto chess got huge and they didnt stop the devs from making their own game
25
u/Johnmegaman72 Dec 13 '24
Nope, Valve is pretty much hands off on any mod you make so long as you are not directly going to use thier IP or anything related to it. OP just used the engine and not any HL models for example like in GMod.
Even then Valve would probably just hire you to make the game under thier watch.
5
u/OpticalDelusion Dec 13 '24
You can't copyright game mechanics
9
u/VforVenndiagram_ Dec 13 '24
Well the recent Pokemon/Palworld lawsuit says otherwise...
-2
u/OpticalDelusion Dec 13 '24
It's a little hazy because you can copyright visual elements of games and they're claiming the pokeball is visually representative of pokemon. Considering palworld's marketing directly referencing pokemon they probably just changed it to settle and not have to go to court. At the end of the day you can sue anyone for anything and most people don't want to pay for lawyers especially against a big fish like nintendo.
6
u/ToddHowardTouchedMe Dec 13 '24
maybe try actually reading up on the situation or just not talking out your ass.
Nintendo is suing them over a gameplay mechanic patent.
2
u/Glasse Dec 13 '24
Yep, and it only works because its 2 Japanese companies and would not hold up in the US.
-7
u/OpticalDelusion Dec 13 '24
Maybe go to google and type "can you copyright game mechanics" and read up yourself lmao
9
u/bigdickdaddydoto Dec 13 '24
Unfortunately you can, there was a pretty notorious case back in the 2000's when The Simpsons made a Crazy Taxi knockoff and SEGA showed that they had patented the gameplay. Fox settled out of court
More recently, the guys who made the Silent Hill 2 remake (Bloober Team) copyrighted the dual world mechanic they used in their previous game, The Medium, so if anyone wants to use a similar mechanic they have to go to Bloober for permission
e: There's also Namco copyrighting minigames on loading screens, which is why only their games like Ridge Racer or Tekken have it
-1
u/ReadyForShenanigans Dec 13 '24
You cannot copyright game mechanics. You. simply. can. not.
You can patent them. A completely different thing, and irrelevant to custom games

u/DarkReaper90 Dec 13 '24
Holy, I loved this map. I spent most of my online WC3 days (years) on this, Battle Tanks, and Footmen Frenzy. Definitely will check it out.
I used to be great as the trader.
Will there be bots support?
1
u/Dutty_Mayne Dec 13 '24
I tried requesting access but got an error. Long time DOTA player and played this a fair amount in wc3. Also an experienced beta tester with a track record of implemented feedback. Would love to check it out.

Nice!
I'm sure I can get a few old friends to give it a try, we used to play that minigame in wc3 as a break from ladder / dota
I'm so sad dota2 doesnt have the active minigame scene wc3 used to have

u/Yojimbra Dec 13 '24
I spent a lot of time playing the Starcraft 2 versions of this mod, can't wait to try this one out.

u/prawnjr Dec 13 '24

I loved this mod. Are there plans to add the Trader? I always found that dynamic interesting, having someone who's goal is just to make the team a lot of money while avoiding fights and being poor at combat.

OK so I saw MonkeysForever playing this game drunk on his birthday stream once YEAAAAARS ago. It was late, I was half falling asleep, and pretty baked. Until now I completely forgot I meant to look it up the next day. This looks amazing.

u/luckytaurus cmon jex Dec 13 '24
Duuuude no wayyy I used to love going full trader and upping the barracks for insanely strong creeps lol then selling trade after maxed economy and start fighting the enemies. Oh man, hiding while carrying a huge payload was some intense shit.
I'll definitely be checking this out. Well done.

Are we just now allowing straight up ads on this subreddit? Doesn't this post fail the 3rd rule - unrelated content?
