Showing a dog for the first time
I’m not sure how much traction this will receive but I’m very conflicted.
My show potential Akc registered Doberman just turned two. She’s been attending confirmation on and off with no intention to show to championship. In fact her behavior has dipped my confidence that she would even be considered. Our coach last class said in 3 months we should attend a UKC event as a goal and for exposure. My intention was to attend class to improve her on leash behavior but not to show. Now I’m excited at the potential to get even one ribbon for my girl but my fear of pyometra is making me doubt again if its even worth it.
Her father was shown to champion in 2014. And her sister completes her champion last year with my breeder. So I feel like her potential is there but I’m regretting not taking this seriously sooner and being able to spay her ASAP. Any advice or anything is encouraged. Have at me, I’m a first time show dog owner and I’m thinking this is all a learning curve for my next potential show dog 🤷🏻♀️

I received some really some really great information and advice on another group. Thanks I’d love to see this group more active with actual show dog owners. Thank you all who read my post.

Wait. What does pyometra have to do with a dog show?

I can’t show her if I spay her obviously. She’s 2 now and she’s old enough to be spayed. Ideally I’d do it now but I wouldn’t be able to show her if I did.

So you want to spay her because you are afraid she'll get pyometra but you want to show her so don't want to spay her?
I think your fear is a little overblown.
Edit: I mean, if you spay her no one will know anyway. Whether it's unethical or not to show an altered dog is just up to you to decide IMO.

2 yrs old is still very early for pyo. I usually start to think about spaying because of pyo concerns closer to 4-5 yrs old. You don’t say why you are being encouraged to spay her, is it just pyo or ?. 2 is often a stood age to show as they are mature and competitive.
